Training Daze

Summary:

Sometimes a normal sparring session can get out of hand, especially when one forgets their own strength and the other doesn't put in any effort.

aka someone gets stabbed by accident.

Work Text:

Byleth is still pretty new at this whole teaching thing but, all things considered, they're not doing too bad. It's been long enough for them to get a grasp at what the students are skilled at, where their weaknesses are, what they should work on, and where they should be aiming for their future classes.

Today's lesson holds two purposes: training (obviously) and building support. The students have been paired up to practice together. Ashe is helping Mercedes with her bow skills, Annette and Dedue are running axe drills at the girl's request. Apparently House Dominic possesses the relic Crusher, a hammer used by Dominic in the War of Heroes. It makes sense, they suppose, when/if Annette ever needs to use it, the axe skills would help. A hammer is just an axe in all but sharpness, after all. Ingrid and Felix are supposed to be working together, but Felix is just swinging at a training dummy and ignoring Ingrid entirely, much to her annoyance. Byleth is about to go and intervene when a gasp from behind them draws everyone's attention.

“Sylvain I am so sorry!”

“How did you even manage that?”

Indeed, Sylvain was asking the important questions here, as the whole class set eyes on a very worried Prince and a Sylvain with a training lance in his side, the redhead looking awfully unaffected for a man who's just been stabbed. Taking stock of everyone else's reactions, Byleth sees Mercedes frozen between running over to help and running to get help, Ashe is watching with his jaw dropped, Annette's covering her face, Dedue has mostly maintained his stoicism, Ingrid looks equal parts put out and concerned (although that's normal when she's looking at Sylvain), and Felix just looks pissed off (although that's normal when he's looking at Dimitri. or Sylvain. Or anyone else really.)

But really, though, how did Dimitri manage that? Not only did he tear through fabric, but also pierce flesh with a blunt wooden tip. It's almost impressive. Byleth is only now noticing the slowly growing trail of blood dripping down Sylvain's side and onto the floor and calls out “Don't.” before Dimitri can attempt to pull the lance out. The Prince freezes and Byleth finishes, “Dimitri, take Sylvain to the infirmary.” He accepts these orders with a “right away, Professor!” and grabs Sylvain. “Hey, you don't need to-” he begins to protest, but Dimitri already has him over his shoulder, “...Okay, I guess I'm being picked up.”

Turning to the rest of the class, Byleth calls out “All right, everyone else back to work. We've still got 20 minutes left.” which was met with a chorus of “Yes, Professor!” loud enough to block out Sylvain's inappropriate joke.

“You know, Your Highness, typically you carry someone to bed and then impale them, not the other way around.”

“Not now Sylvain…”

Notes:

Sylvain is probably my favourite character in three houses, hence why my first instinct is to stab him
