Work Text:

Giselle slowly sipped her tea, savoring the taste as she listened to Robert rustle around their bedroom through the baby monitor perched on the counter. She could hear him muttering quietly to their still sleeping daughter that she was lucky she didn’t have to work yet, and she chuckled to herself, shaking her head.

Her toast popped out of the toaster, not burnt this time, thankfully, and she started humming as she began preparing her breakfast. The sound of Robert murmuring out a soft goodbye to Sofia caught her attention, and then the sound of his footsteps coming down the stairs flowed through her ears.

“Morning.”

He stepped into the kitchen, ready for work, though his hair looked a bit more disheveled than usual, his tie askew, and his face was sprinkled with stubble. Giselle leaned closer as he walked by, offering her cheek, and he gave her a kiss, his hand brushing against her hip as he moved.

“I finally figured out the settings on that new toaster,” she said, holding up her own slice. “I can make you some, if you’d like.”

“It’s okay.” Robert shrugged, his expression turning playful. “I’ll just take some of yours.”

Before she had the chance to process what he said, he grabbed her wrist and took a large bite of her toast. Giselle laughed in disbelief, her mouth falling open.

“You butthead!”

She pushed his shoulder, and he joined in her laughter, his eyes sparkling as he chewed his food. Shaking her head, she took a bite herself and watched as he slowly began making his coffee. As he stirred a bit of honey into the hot liquid, her gaze trailed down to the tie dangling around his neck. It was one she’d made him years ago, back when they first met, out of the same curtains she’d cut up to make her dress. She hadn’t seen it in quite some time, and the fond memories washed over her like a warm wave. Reaching out, she straightened it, just as she always did, and gave him a small smile.

“Do you know when you’ll be home tonight?”

“Ten,” Robert sighed. “If I’m lucky. I’ve got a ton of meetings today.”

There was a crease between his brows, one she desperately wanted to kiss away, and he shook his head. Gazing at him sympathetically, she gently rubbed his back. He took a slow sip of his coffee, then sighed again, and slid his arm around her. Setting his mug back down, he pulled her closer, and dropped his head, burying his face against the crook of her neck. Giselle’s limbs wrapped around him without hesitation, and she held him tight, kissing his temple.

Ever since learning the wish she’d made was real, and not just some strange dream of his, he’d been incredibly clingy, and she couldn’t say she blamed him. He'd finally opened up to her about how he’d been having nightmares about the events, about losing her, and their daughters. He hadn't been sleeping well because of it, resulting in many nights where she woke to find him staring at the ceiling, or watching their baby’s chest steadily rise and fall, and she wished, more than anything, that she could take all of that pain, and all of those fears away.

“What time is it?”

Giselle blinked, his voice pulling her from her whirling thoughts, and looked at the clock just above the oven. “Six-thirty.”

Robert whined, his hold on her tightening. “I have to go.” Despite what he said, he made no effort to let go, and they continued to hold each other in silence for just a moment longer.

Giving her one last squeeze, he reluctantly pulled away but kept his hands on her hips. Her own came to rest on his chest, and she offered him a small, sweet smile before leaning in to give him a short farewell kiss. As soon as their lips met, however, his palms slid to her lower back, and their kiss grew much deeper than she had initially intended. Heat began to slowly course through her veins, pooling in the pit of her stomach, and she slid her arms around his neck, knotting her fingers into the hair on the back of his head.

“Goodness,” she breathed out when they finally broke away, her heart beating wildly inside her chest. “That was quite a goodbye kiss.”

Robert smiled softly, his forehead pressing against hers. “I won’t see you again for several hours.” He tilted his chin just enough to start pressing slow, tender kisses across her jaw, and down the length of her neck. “If we don’t share a really good kiss now, I might just wither away.”

“Is that so?” Giselle giggled, his stubble tickling her skin.

He hummed, his lips trailing along her collarbone, and though she desperately wanted to continue, as moments alone like this so rarely happened now, she knew he had to leave.

“Robert.” She caressed his cheeks and guided his head back up to meet his playful gaze. “If you keep kissing me like that, I might not ever let you leave again.”

Robert gave her a lopsided smile. “You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

She laughed lightly, shaking her head, and he leaned in, kissing her once more, then twice, then a third, and fourth time.

“You are going to be late, you silly man.” She grinned against his lips as he continued to kiss her over, and over.

Finally, he stopped and turned just enough to kiss the palm of her hand. He then moved down to her wrist, and lingered there for a moment, his eyes closed as he focused on the beat of her heart, and she gently ran her thumb across his cheekbone.

“I will be right here when you get back,” she murmured softly. “I promise.” Robert exhaled, his hand sliding up her forearm. “Morgan and Sofia will be too,” she continued. “We’ll all be safe, and sound, and very happy to see you.”

Nodding, he leaned in and kissed her forehead. “I love you,” he said, his lips brushing against her skin.

“I love you, too.” Giselle giggled when he, once again, refused to move, and she gently pushed his chest. “Go, Robert. Before you miss your train.”

Grabbing the last of her toast, she shoved it into his mouth, then she moved behind him, and began guiding him towards the front door.

“Go! Go, go, go.”

“You’re so bossy.”

Grinning, she playfully patted his butt. “You like it.”
