A Charming Melody

Summary:

A difficult spell in Bard class makes Luz late for Azura Book Club. Seeing her frustration, Amity agrees to help out with the spell in any way she can. With a convenient professor absence, it may be just enough to help Luz pass her test on the Carol of Charm.

Chapter 1: Delays and Frustration

Notes:

Hey guys, first time posting on Ao3 and first fic. I love these two little goobers with my whole heart.

For all of my fellow "where does this fit into canon" friends, I'd say between s1e12 (Adventures in the Elements) and Grom (e16) is the loosest I can go here, but considering Amity talks about Willow (and something she said in passing conversation), it's probably right between Understanding Willow and Grom.

Hope you enjoy! Give me your feedback if you have some (but like do the thing they make you do in middle school English where you say something you liked first, if you can).

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Amity knew Luz wasn’t the most organized of people. From the amount of misadventures Amity had just heard the girl get into, let alone experience for herself, she could attest to that. Or the amount of times she’d sprint into class, getting disappointed looks from the teachers. What Willow mentioned about Luz’s locker only further confirmed this sentiment.

‘She’s never been this late before,’ Amity thought to herself, staring at the shelves on the walls of her secret hideout.

As Amity summoned her scroll and idly swiped through Penstagram stories, she couldn’t help but wonder what had happened. It would be one thing if Luz unexpectedly didn’t show up to school one day (still a worrying thought to Amity), but it was another to be late to an Azura Book Club meeting she had seemed so stoked for just earlier this morning. Amity’s swipes became more mindless than before, nearly liking one of Mattholomule’s posts before snapping back to reality.

As the time on her scroll ticked a minute forward, Amity sighed and stepped to her feet. 15 minutes late wasn’t enough to get upset over, but it was enough to get Amity to worry that something had happened to Luz. With Luz having no scroll, Amity wasn’t all too sure if she could find her if she left the hideout. Regardless, she had two main leads: Hexside and the Owl Shack.

‘If only Luz had a scroll. Then I’d be able to contact her… whenever I wanted. I wonder what she’d post on Penstagram,’ Amity thought idly before carefully stepping out of her hideout and sealing the door, ‘I bet she’d just be the cu-’

Amity snapped back to reality from a sudden noise, an incoming call, from Skara. After thanking the Titan for it just being a voice call, red-in-the face, she answered.

“Hey Amity!” Skara’s cheerful voice boomed through the scroll, making Amity adjust the volume so as to not agitate Malphas, “Luz wanted me to ask, or I guess tell you, that she’s on her way to the library now, if you’re still there. She kinda just ran off after asking me to call you.”

“...Oh… er… yes that sounds great! Thanks for letting me know, Skara,” Amity winced as she fumbled the first half of the sentence, still awkward from her train of thought being interrupted.

“Yeah she said she had to study some sort of book with you, she seemed kind of embarrassed when I asked what for. Anyways, just be warned, she stayed after with me and a few others to try and finish this spell and seemed super done with it.”

Amity fell quiet for a second, processing what Skara had just said, before realizing she should probably say something, “Alright, I’ll be careful,” were the words she settled on after a few painful seconds.

Skara smiled, or at least, Amity inferred she did by the slight pep-up in her tone, “Well, I’ll let you go, with how fast Luz ran out of here she should be there any moment now. See ya tomorrow, Amity!”

Amity found herself grinning slightly as well, “See you tomorrow,” she said simply, before ending the call. Luz would be here soon, which only made Amity grin brighter. Amity was fairly certain that nothing could put a pep in her step quite like Luz’s positive energy.

With a lovesick sigh, Amity decided it’d be nice to meet Luz at the entrance. Pocketting her scroll, she began to stroll towards the front of the library. Rounding a corner, she heard quick footsteps and a shout of reprimand from one of the librarians, followed by a hastily shouted apology:

“Sorrysorry I’m-already-late I’ll be careful I swear!" was the speedster’s reply, followed by a hushed, “ay Dios mío, Amity’s gonna-”

“Luz!” Amity said as she peeked her head around the corner, watching her friend sprint down the aisle. She would have almost found it amusing, reminiscent of the wailing star and fighting the graffiti’d Otabin, if she hadn’t heard the soft scuff of a sneaker on the tile.

Luckily for Luz, Amity was close enough to, with a quick scoop of her arms, catch Luz, and prevent her from falling. Unfortunately for Amity’s heart, Luz’s head was pressed just below her sternum, in an awkward half-hug-not-hug. Amity felt her face redden, and felt frozen, until Luz spoke up.

“Omigosh Amity I’m so-so-so sorry,” Luz peeled herself away from Amity, “There was this spell and I couldn’t figure it out and then I hit you and-” the words died in her throat and her eyes widened upon seeing Amity’s reddened face.

‘Great going Luz, you’re 20 minutes late, and you almost plow into Amity?’ Luz felt frustration boil under her skin, and looked down in shame.

Amity spared a glance at Luz, and the flusteredness she felt quickly faded to make room for worry, and even some guilt, “Luz… hey, Luz, it’s okay, let’s just head to the hideout alright?”

Amity had only one goal in mind for this club meeting: lift Luz’s spirits no matter the cost (of not discussing any Azura this session).

Notes:

I'm thinking this will be around 3 chapters, which is what I have it plotted around right now (yes I made a plot plan which is very shocking for me, even on my essays I just word vomit)

Really could be 2 if I wanted it to but I have 3 distinct parts in my mind, if it goes more than 3 I guess I had more ideas.
