Senku had been in the racing scene for years. He'd bought his white 1995 Skyline shortly after he had turned eighteen and had gotten his license. His father Byakuya had hated it at first but eventually came to terms with the fact that lately it was the only think making his boy truly happy.
Senku was well known in the scene. He could calculate turns in the moment, knew how to adjust for when the roads were wet better than anyone else.
Senku took turns sharp on purpose to see how close he could get to the guard rail without scraping his paint. He pushed his own limits because no one else could compare.
Rich boy Ryusui Nanami could come close, but he relied heavily on the fact that he could afford any part and modification that he wanted. Ryusui was a good friend to him, constantly trying to offer to pay for his car modifications but Senku always turned him down.
Eventually the racing was starting to get stale. Senku was attempted more and more dangerous stunts. He was taking turns harder, getting close and closer to the guard rails that others were worried he might actually hit one soon and spin out.
That's when the new guy showed up. Called himself Chrome, insisted that it was in fact his legal name but wouldn't tell anyone his family name claiming it didn't matter. The one time Senku called him a fatherless bastard, Chrome had responded with "Yeah, and so what?"
Chrome drove a blue 1995 Rx-7. A bubbly little thing that Senku thought looked next to his Skyline. Their first race was intense. Chrome had been keeping up for most of the race. Keeping up closer than anyone had ever before.
One or two turns Chrome had actually managed to pull ahead despite Senku forcing him to take the turn from the outside. Senku never let him keep the lead for long though.
At a stretch where Chrome had pulled ahead, Senku gently tapped the rear right corner of the RX-7 and managed to pull ahead and win the race by a nose. The second they both parked and exited their cars, Chrome marched over. Senku didn't even have a chance to say anything before Chrome's fist made contact with his jaw. The sting was instant. He knew it would bruise fast.
Senku grinned wide at Chrome,
because for the first time in years he felt truly alive.
