Work Text:
Izuku was four years old when he first remembers comprehending what soulmates were. His mom showed him stories, and she talked to her own soulmate constantly by writing on her arm. Izuku knew his father wasn’t his moms soulmate, but they did still love each other very much in a more platonic way. His dad lived in America not only for his job, but because he found his soulmate and wanted to stay with her. He talked to Izuku when he could, the time differences causing issues, and Izuku would visit sometimes as he got older. His half-siblings were also nice, even if they didn’t have much in common.
Soulmates were able to talk to each other when the youngest turned six years old, so in case he was the youngest he started writing hello on his arm after his sixth birthday. It wasn’t until September of that year, specifically the twenty-third, that he got a response, a tentative hello back. Izuku was overjoyed! Running to show his mom the neat kanji resting on his arm in a dark red that was almost black.
Izuku wrote in a green ballpoint pen, his kanji a little messy but still legible, telling his soulmate his name was Izuku and that he was six. He got a response shortly after that his soulmates name was Momo and they just turned six, it was their birthday. Izuku had his mom write that on the calendar so Izuku remembered to wish them a happy birthday next year, and told his soulmate when his was as well so they knew in case they wanted to do the same.
Izuku and Momo got on like a house on fire, especially since they both found quirks really interesting. Izuku often rambled about quirks, and was really happy when Momo asked about them or offered their own input.
Talking with Momo was a bright spot in his ever dimming everyday life. People got meaner as they got older, especially to Izuku since he was quirkless, but with his Mom and Momo as a constant positive force in his life, he was able to keep going strong.
Then he was attacked by the sludge villain, and everything changed. He was rescued by an underground hero named Eraserhead, or Aizawa Shouta as he came to know. The hero restored some of Izuku’s faith in humanity, bluntly telling him that it would be hard work but he did think it was possible for a quirkless person to be a hero.
They ended up meeting a few times on accident, when Izuku was up on the roof of his apartment building studying or talking with his soulmate late into the night. The pro was concerned at first, but quickly realized it was just a way for him to get out of the apartment without going to far. He got to know Izuku a bit and then offered to help the boy train for the entrance exams that were coming in the next ten months.
He taught the boy some parkour, got him running for his stamina, and they worked together on cleaning up the trash beach as a way to focus on other muscle groups because Izuku was a noodle. Aizawa then surprised him by offering to recommend him for the exam when Izuku managed to deduce the main test would be robots.
Izuku talked to Momo a bit about it before accepting, since they knew a bit about the recommendation exam and were debating about accepting it themselves. Izuku did end up accepting Aizawa’s recommendation, since it was his best shot at getting into U.A.
At the very least he knew he would pass the general education exam and if worst came to worse, he could go the sports festival route. If he placed high enough there, he could probably transfer into the hero course.
The day of the recommendation exam loomed on him quicker than he expected the days going by in a blur of training and studying. But the day was now upon him.
He was writing out a rant on a quirk he saw on the way to Momo when he bumped into someone.
“Oh, so sorry!” He said, bowing in apology.
“It’s okay, no harm done!” A feminine voice said, causing Izuku to look up. “I’m Yaoyorozu Momo, are you also here for the recommendation exam?”
Izuku blinked in surprise, the familiar name standing out in his mind. “Oh, uhm, yes, I am!” He said with a nod, “I’m Midoriya Izuku.”
Recognition flashed behind her eyes at his first name as well, “Are you..?” She asked, vaguely gesturing at her arm.
“Possibly?” He said, though it sounded more like a squeaked question. To be fair though, Yaoyorozu was very pretty and she was talking to him.
She held out her arm, and he saw his own messy kanji on it and his eyes widened. “You are,” He breathed, holding up his green pen.
Momo smiled, “Well then, it’s extra nice to meet you, Izuku.”
“Likewise,” Izuku said, still reeling a little bit. “I, I knew you’d be here but I didn’t expect to literally run into you.”
Momo giggled, “I didn’t either, but fate works in weird ways, I guess.”
“That’s true,” Izuku murmured. “Oh, we should get inside before the welcoming announcement starts.”
Momo agreed, adding on, “We should also exchange contact information so we can chat more later. Sure we could just write, but with your rambles it might be easier to text.”
Izuku blushed, “Yeah, probably,” He agreed, “Walk and talk then?”
Momo agreed, and they headed inside together. Izuku was so happy he found his soulmate, and was excited to get to know her in person too. Sure they had known each other for almost ten years at this point, but knowing them in person felt different. Izuku couldn’t explain how but it just was.
Izuku did learn a lot about her over the few months between the exam and when they started U.A., they met up a lot so he learned how she took her tea, how she preferred sweets to other things. He learned how her quirk worked, and that it didn’t matter to her that he didn’t have one.
One afternoon, before school started, they were having a picnic in a park. Izuku had called it a date by accident, but Momo was more than happy to call it that herself.
“I think, I would really like to date you, Momo.” Izuku said, almost absentmindedly. “I feel like I’m developing romantic feelings for you.”
Momo blinked, “I thought we were dating?” She said, tilting her head in confusion. “I do have romantic feelings for you, I think I have since the one ramble you did on groundbreakers quirk.”
Izuku blinked, then blushed. “Well then, if you thought we were then I wouldn’t say no,” He muttered.
Momo smiled, “Then we’re dating. You, Midoriya Izuku, are not only my soulmate but also my boyfriend.”
Izuku returned her smile, “Okay,”
