For the Sun Loved the Moon Through the Cold, Dark Night

Summary:

Sam loved a man, once. When that man changed, his love had to change, too. He has spent decades, now, wrestling with the grief and guilt that comes along with caring for someone he can never truly be with.

Work Text:

Samson rested on a fresh log by the campfire and set his cattleman hat by his side. The night was quiet save for the crackle of burning wood and the soft screech of an owl in the tree above, cloaked in twilight.

Flickering shadows deepened the laugh lines around an easy smile, though it felt like ages since sincere laughter had touched his lips.

"It's safe," he drawled to the embers, not daring to look away. "Come on down."

A flutter of leaves marked the owl's silent descent. Sebastian's cool fingers trailed the stubbled edge of Sam's jaw, beckoning his gaze.

Heavy blue eyes lifted, slowly, drinking in the unblemished, youthful face of his first and only love, then quickly dropped away again.

Sebastian closed his eyes and leaned in, basking in Sam's warmth as he drew closer, listening fondly to the steady rhythm of his heart. He pressed a soft kiss to his cheek, lingering just a moment.

Restless snuffling and stomping came from behind as Sebastian approached the horse. He grinned at the sight of the man unconscious, bound and laid across the saddle.

"Killed his little girl," Sam justified, knowing his conscience would bleed all the same.
