Work Text:
Everything at once rushing over her, overwhelming her.
Sight, sound, smell.
Too much. It's all just too much.
She'd already watched her Mother, her family, her world collapse around her.
Now it was her turn. Her father had been wrong in sending her here. She would die here under the heavy weight of "her powers" on this alien planet with its cruel yellow sun--
Only Krypto's squirming in her clutching arms warned of her apparent cousin's return as another round of too-loud, soul-crushing blasts rattled against her over-sensitive ears.
"What the hell, Skippy, you're tormenting this poor kid."
Someone new. At least someone Kal El trusted enough to tell them about her it seemed.
Not that at the time Kara understood a word being said, so new to Earth as she had been.
"I don't need another lecture, Lois, I need--"
Kara gave up trying to listen as the pair drew closer.
Their voices drowned in another whistling blasting against her eardrums.
"Peanut butter?" Kal El asked, "That's your idea?"
"No, Clark, that's not all of my idea, but according to you, she has an adorable bodyguard I need to distract to get close to work on part two of said idea."
"Lois, I still don't think--"
"Go away, Kent." The female voice snapped as Kara Zor El, looking through both her shielding hands, her guard dog's body, and the wall separating them, had her first glimpse of the no-nonsense human his cousin had picked for his companion, the one and only Lois Lane.
Dressed in heavy snow gear and holding out an open jar of peanut butter like a grenade about to go off and the cuff of the headphones dangling off her other wrist, the human girl approached.
Of course, Krypto had rushed to defend her, whilst Clark, of course, jumped to defend his human mate.
"Dammit, Skippy, that's what I wanted him to do." Lois barked, triggering a giggle from Kara when the weakened human woman sent her far stronger cousin tumbling as she'd shoved him aside and instead held out the peanut butter jar again into the oncoming Krypto's muzzle when her dear pet somersaults in midair to defend her again only to have the sticky goop jar shoved into his face instead, caking his nose and most of his muzzle with the thick treat.
Not that at the time Kara nor Krypto had understood the action, triggering a heavy blast of heat vision that burned Kara's eyes as she, too, jumped into the fight in retaliation.
The resulting wrestling match between the Krypton born cousins was of course quicker than expected given how new Kara had been to her yellow sun gained abilities but ending with Clark sent tossed hard into several of the crystal and ice blend made walls taking out several swarming mechanical 'helpers' with him yet Lois getting the best of Kara in tackling the out of breath teenager from behind long enought to finish wrestling the shockingly soft headphones onto Kara's head finally blocking most of the soul crushing sounds Kara just wasn't strong enough to block out herself.
Then the song started playing.
With its soft guitar notes and softer-sung lyrics.
"Hey, don't write yourself off yet--"
And for possibly the first time since her father had sent her away from their dying world, Kara Zor El felt herself relaxing as she pressed her hands over the alien offering, closing her eyes and letting the held back grief overwhelm her the longer she listened to that strange alien voiced melody.
"Again." She remembers barking when the song ended that first time. "Play again." She demands tapping at the headphones then at the music player in Lois's gloved hand.
"Since when do you know--" Clark had coughed in answer to Lois's agreeing chuckle of "Oh, you want it again?" With neither female giving more than a glance to the "underwear" supersuit clade hero stumbling back through the smashed wall, but Lois only rolled her eyes and helpfully replayed the tune with a cool "I don't, but this tune deserves the repetition." As the song restarted over the gifted headphones.
And for possibly the first time since her father had sent her away from their dying world, Kara Zor El felt herself relaxing letting the slow, soft tones of the unfamiliar song drown out the noise of her new intended home world as she pressed her hands over the alien offering, closing her eyes and letting the held back grief overwhelm her.
Krypto still adorably wrestling with the peanut butter jar dragging the thing along as he flipped and twisted in mid air the jar still snagged around his sticky covered muzzle in his attampts to lick out every last drop of the gooy stuff as the song was replayed again. And again. And again.
