Drew 💖: At the grocery store. Is there anything you want me to pick up?

May was really craving a Durin Smoothie. Then she thought about how that was a weird craving, even for her. Then she thought: could it be a pregnancy craving?

She quickly did the mental math. Her last period was just over a month ago, so the timing worked out. Were pregnancy cravings even a symptom you could get at this stage? Despite all the research and preparation they had been doing, May had no clue.

Happy Contestshipping Day! Written for day 7 (future) of Contestshipping Week 2026.

Notes:

This fic touches upon the concept of fertility issues / having self-esteem problems over not conceiving a child. It’s an overall positive story, but please keep this in mind if you think that’d impact your reading experience.

Also: Durin Berries are one of the most bitter berries in the franchise. Just as some context for the beginning of the fic.

May hurried over to their bathroom, opened the cabinet where she kept the pregnancy tests… and found nothing.

Of course. When they first decided to try and have a baby, May bought six pregnancy tests. She had thought that would be plenty. She and Drew were young and healthy, and their doctor said she didn’t expect they’d have any trouble conceiving a child.

Last month, she had gotten yet another negative result on that final pregnancy test. She told herself that she’d buy another set of tests soon, but she just couldn’t do it during the immediate aftermath.

May she knew that she was being overly emotional. Drew had gone over the statistics with her multiple times – they really didn’t have to start worrying about fertility issues until they reached the one year mark. He always reassured her that even if that did turn out to be a problem, it wouldn’t change how much he loved her.

May appreciated his support, but it could only do so much. These weren’t the kind of feelings that could be reasoned with. Neither logical arguments nor soothing words could completely eliminate the frustration and inadequacy within her.

All of this to say: May never got around to buying the next set of pregnancy tests.

May 🌹: Durin Berries and a couple of pregnancy tests! ( ੭ ˘ ³˘)੭‎°。⋆♡‧₊˚

Drew knew not to get ahead of himself. This didn’t mean May was pregnant, it just meant that she could be. It’s not like that fact was a surprise to him. For the past seven months, there was always a two week period where that thought frequently crossed his mind. His wife could be pregnant.

Just being reminded of the possibility filled him with hope and excitement. It’s not like the entire process was sunshine and rainbows – his heart still sank each time a test came back negative – but for the most part, Drew was focused on the upsides. He knew that, one way or another, he and May would eventually become parents, and that was enough to keep him happy.

He only wished that May felt the same way. Unfortunately, their failure to conceive was something his wife had taken much more personally than he did. Drew wished there was a way for him to feel that hurt for her – to take away all the negativity and sorrow she felt and bear it on his own. He’d do it in a heartbeat. But that wasn’t a possibility, so all he could do was reassure her as best he could.

Drew made his way to the health & wellness section of the store, and soon found the correct aisle. He was a bit overwhelmed by just how many types of pregnancy tests there were. A part of him wanted to overthink and analyze the benefits of each, but he told himself that they all were functionally the same. He grabbed the one closest to him and quickly inspected it.

Chansey Pregnansey Test! The packaging read.Hap-pee-ny on the stick and see if your lucky egg has been fertilized!

Drew placed the package back on the shelf. He picked up the one next to it – which had professional branding that promised accurate results within three minutes. That one would do.

Ring ring ring! Ring ring ring! Alarm tone, alarm tone! Ring ring–

May turned off her phone timer. The three minutes were up and the test was done. Looking at the results wasn’t going to change anything, not really. Either she was pregnant or she was not. She’d have to find out eventually, and now was as good of a time as any to do so.

Funny, how she could come up with so many good arguments for why she should just check, and yet none of them made her body move from its place on the bathroom floor.

“Could you do it…?” May asked.

“Of course,” he said. “No matter what this test says –”

“I know, I know! You love me, you always will, you’re the best husband ever – just hurry up!”

Drew smirked. “Well, if you’re going to praise me like that, maybe I should stall it out longer…”

His actions didn’t match his words, as he began to make his way into the bathroom. He picked the test up off the counter. His face immediately betrayed him – he broke out into a wide grin.

“Good news, honey.”

And that's a wrap on Contestshipping Week 2026! I had so much fun organizing this event. An insanely special shoutout to my best friend Guille (schrodingersbabe), who did writing sprints with me for EVERY SINGLE FIC posted for CSWeek2026! I am not kidding when I say these would NOT have been published without them.
