Work Text:
What do you do when the body of your true love dies around you?
When the voice they spoke with grows faint and disappears?
When you can’t hear them, you can’t even feel their presence inside.
You sit in their shell, entwined in their bones, their flesh, their blood pumping in their heart.
As you are holding them so intimately, so tightly.
You did this for them.
They know and they forgive you.
You have stretched their life out so long and thin.
You love them just as much as the day you met.
A body is easy to maintain, but a spirit? A soul?
That is growing harder and harder as the centuries go by.
No saying goodnight for the final time.
You don’t want to say goodbye.
But you will.
