Work Header

no better place than right by your side

Summary:

"Welcome back, Light," L greets, watching as Light slips out of his shoes into his slippers and hangs his jacket up. He's dressed in a sweater, one Soichiro bought for him, the very one that hugs his form beautifully.

L always jokes that he could write poem after poem about that waist, which always leaves Light feeling just a bit too flustered for his liking.

"It's good to be back," Light replies, stepping further into the apartment. The heat has been on all day while he was away, and he's thankful for that, as he moves to sit on the couch. A throw blanket is wrapped around his shoulders, and he looks up to see his boyfriend peering down at him, a hand coming to brush against his cold cheek. "Thank you."

or; Light and L enjoying being cozy together.

Notes:

Work Text:

There's a slight chill in the air as Light returns home from his last university class of the day. Jacket bundled around his lithe form, he unlocks the front door and quickly steps inside, taking a moment to bask in the warmth of the apartment.

His basking is cut short by padded footsteps making their way towards him, and he turns to see L, looking like he did whenever Light left earlier that day. Same oversized long sleeve tee, same baggy jeans that he nearly steps on, the same look in his eyes that after two years of dating, Light realizes is full of affection, and the same small smile on his lips. The same lips that kissed Light awake this morning instead of his alarm.

L hums his welcome and then sits down beside Light, glancing down at his laptop that sits on the coffee table. He knows in a few minutes, curiosity will strike Light and he'll ask about L's current case, and like he always does, L will tell him every interesting detail about it, even if he isn't technically supposed to. It's their little secret, one they keep well.

Light's head finds its place against L's shoulder, leaning against him and letting a sigh escape. While he does enjoy university, and is grateful for his classes, he loves moments like these, when him and L get to be all cozy with one another. Especially when it's freezing outside and Light was walking across campus, cold fingers pressed deeply into the pockets of his coat.

L drags the laptop from the table to his lap, continuing to work. Before Light can ask, he starts to explain the case, voice low and relaxed as he speaks. Light once said that he enjoys L's voice, especially after long days, so L talks to him whenever one of those days occur.

The brunet pays attention, looking at the laptop screen and humming as he's given the facts. Two victims were found stabbed in a village a few hours away from Tokyo, and L has it narrowed down to the wife, considering the victims are her husband and his alleged mistress.

As L continues to drone on about the case, Light lets out a quiet yawn, pressing his head further against the fabric of L's shirt. It's warm against his skin, and while he's typically against naps (he doesn't want his sleep to be ruined), he finds himself wanting to doze off.

Of course, his boyfriend notices, raising an eyebrow and raising the back of his hand until it presses against Light's forehead, checking him for a fever. "Are you alright? You're not usually so tired after your classes."

Light hums in reply, nose pressed against the crook of L's neck. "It was a long day," he says, not bothering to move from L's side. "Plus, it's cold outside. Don't you want me to be warm?"

"If Light insists," L tells him, and then continues to talk about the case, muttering about the blood splatter patterns.

Light nods along, desperately trying to keep himself awake, but to no avail. His eyes soon fall shut, soft snores leaving him as he sleeps peacefully. L stops talking after a few minutes, looking down at his sleeping boyfriend with a small smile on his lips.

It's quickly decided that they'll stay like this until Light wakes up, and then they can move to their bedroom and sleep in their bed, instead of on the sofa. After all, how is he supposed to pass on the opportunity to stay cozy with Light by his side? He can't. He won't.

When Light does wake up, he rubs at his eyes, yawning out loud and blinking up at L. "What time is it?"

"Nearly nine," L answers, leaning down to press a kiss between Light's eyebrows. "We can go to our room, if you'd like."

They do go to their room, hand in hand, and while Light changes into his pajamas, L busies himself with plugging in his and Light's laptops, as well as grabbing an extra blanket from the closet. Once Light is finished with his nightly routine, he climbs into bed, L following suit, and they crawl under the blankets to them.

They turn off their bedside lamps, basking the room in darkness, and L turns to Light, pressing another kiss to his face. "Goodnight, Light. Sleep well."

"You too," is all Light manages to get out before he falls asleep again, this time his head being against L's chest, listening to his heartbeat. And while L can stay up for hours after Light falls asleep, he too falls into a peaceful slumber.
