Chapter 1: Fred

Chapter Text

Fred

George and Max were running on minimal sleep, like any first-time parents they were in the throes of the newborn stage. Frederick Verstappen was none the wiser to his parents’ weariness. While Fred slept soundly in the bassinet in the living room, George and Max were trying to curb their fatigue with coffee.

The kettle boiled and mugs laid out instant coffee already in the mugs, George bleary eyed pours the hot water into the mugs, like a tired octopus Max was clinging to him from behind.

“Schatje I’ve never been this tired in my life.” Max grumbles his head buried right in between George’s shoulder blades. George sighs and brings the mug of coffee up to his nose, smelling the caffeine.

“Do you want milk in your coffee?” George whispers tiredly, patting Max’s forearm.

“Mhmm” Max nods and presses a kiss to George’s right shoulder blade.

Untangling Max from himself, George gets the milk from the fridge and adds a splash to both his cup and Max’s then brings them over to the living room and places them on the coffee table. The pair collapse boneless onto the couch, George to get comfortable curls up onto Max his head resting in the crook of Max’s neck and an arm thrown around his middle.

From the bassinet Fred let’s out a snuffle and wiggles to get more comfortable.

“We have a pretty great kid, don’t we?” George asks looking up at Max.

“The best.” Max responds placing a kiss on George’s forehead.

The thing about Fred is that no one outside of George and Max’s immediate family know of his arrival, they wanted to savour him just being theirs with out any public scrutiny. They new the minute got out the entire internet would explode with both negative and positive reactions.

With winter break happening at the moment they were just enjoying have their teeny tiny Fred all to their selves, but they knew the minute their friends got bored the driver’s chat would blow up asking if he had been born.

The pair enjoyed the slowness of the morning, sipping their coffee and watching Fred sleep. He was noisy thing, constantly snuffling and grunting, in his five days of being alive George had so many videos of the sounds he makes.

It was on Fred’s 7th day that they decided to announce his birth to the other drivers.

They had a photographer come into their house and do a small newborn photoshoot, the photo they chose to use was of Fred all tucked up on his stomach, wearing a little white cotton set and a matching hat that had little bear ears on it.

The dropped a photo in the chat and a simple announcement:

Frederick Verstappen,

January 13th 20XX

They sent it through from Max’s phone, after sending it George turned off the phone and dropped it on the beside table next to him, Max beside him in bed was lying down bare chested with Fred lying on his chest in nothing but a nappy. They had been told skin to skin is a great form of bonding.

George turning onto his side, gently with his index finger runs it over Fred’s chubby cheek stroking and admiring his son.

Max’s phone was vibrating non-stop as the group chat reacted to the announcement.

Then came the ringing from his own phone.

With a sigh George rolled over and grabbed the phone, it was Alex ringing mostly likely miffed at the idea of having to learn about Fred at the same time as everyone else.

“Hello?” George answered the video call.

“Don’t Hello me George William Russell.” Alex scowls into the camera

“Alright I won’t.” George replies and sticks out his tongue at his best mate.

“So how is my god son treating you?” Alex asks, his head moving around the small screen hoping to catch a glimpse of Fred.

“Your god son?” Max pipes up from beside George.

“Yes, my god son.” Alex exclaims, offended at the thought of not being the boys god parent.

“Well we are absolutely exhausted and our house looks like a mess, we are going to pay our cleaner double.” George chuckles quietly, he then turns his phone screen to show the boy off.

Alex’s eyes just about pop out of his head “Holy, George he is your literal clone!”

“I’m happy he is all George and not me.” Max says, stroking Fred’s back. The sensation causes Fred to wriggle a let out a snuffle.

“Officially the cutest thing I have seen, I’ve died. Tell my wife I love her.” Alex lets out dramatically, flopping dramatically onto the lounge chair he was sitting on. Last George had heard Alex and Lily were spending break somewhere tropical, his brain too tired to remember where exactly.

Alex’s phone is snatched out of his hand and Lily appears on the screen laughing. “We’ve done it! We’ve killed our husband, we’ll have all his money now.” Lily whispers into the phone conspiratorially.

“Should we buy a private island first?” George answers back, before bursting into a fit of giggles at Lily’s words.

“I think your Dada has gone crazy ventje” Max whispers into the top of Fred’s head. George upon hearing this, gives Max’s should a gentle hit and sends a small glare his way. Max rolls his eyes at his husband’s dramatics used to after all their years together.

“Well you fight with your other husband, when Lex and I get back we are going to spoil our god son rotten. Bye” Lily brings Alex back into the frame the pair wave before hanging up the call.

“Would you kill me for all my money so you can buy a private Island?” Max asks.

“Maybe.” George replies shrugging.

“Ok.” Max says.

In response to the commotion Fred starts to stir and not before long lets out a cry much louder than a child his size should possibly make, the same sound which seems to break both of his parents hearts every time they hear it.

“I think he’s hungry?” George says sitting up instantly at the sound of his baby’s distress. Max sitting up slowly cradles the boy to his chest before passing him to George.

“I’ll make his milk.” Max says leaving the room, alongside his footsteps the smaller footsteps of the cats could be heard. They were a little apprehensive of Fred at first, but upon realising he was staying the cats seemed lighten up to the idea of him. Now anywhere Fred was in the apartment, at least one cat was close by keeping an eye on their baby.

In an attempt to soothe his son, George gets up out of bed and starts rocking Fred backwards and forwards cradling him to his chest. After a few moments Fred settles and opens his eyes, bright blue eyes a near identical colour to George’s stare up at him as well as they can through newborn haze.

“Are you hungry my love?” George asks and gently pokes at his cheek. In response Fred turns his head mouth searching for food. “Ok ok, Papa is coming with your milk lovebug.” George places a kiss onto his sons’ forehead.

As if almost summoned Max appears back in the bedroom bottle of formula in hand with Donut and Jimmy at his feet.

“Milk is here.” Max passes the warm bottle to George.

Max crawls back into bed, George follows after him. Settling in between Max’s thighs, resting his back on his husband’s chest, George brings the bottle to Fred’s mouth; the boy suckles greedily, eyes fluttering shut in the process.

Max wraps his arms around George’s middle mindful of the baby, the new parents watch their son drink admiring and just basking in the intimacy of it all. They could officially say they survived their first week as new parents.
