everyone adores you (at least i do)

Summary:

Sho and Rou go to a museum together. Rou isn't really interested in museums or the artwork there, but he's interested in Sho.

Notes:

My first ever ruberou fic! I've been wanting to write for them for a long time now but always hesitated cuz I was scared of mischaracterization, but here's my very first attempt!!

This one is very lightly inspired by a scene in Miseinen: Mijukuna Oretachi wa Bukiyou ni Shinkouchuu, or also known as Our Youth — specifically the scene after Hirukawa and Minase watch the screening of the film by Minase's dad.

Work Text:

Koyanagi’s not quite sure himself as to how he got here, standing at a train station before the sun was even up. The events between getting up from his bed and arriving at the station itself’s been a blur to him thus far. He’s out of focus, mind still fuzzy with sleep as he stumbles over to the benches and plops himself down. There was a chance that he would’ve fallen asleep sitting up if it weren’t for the fact that his mind was supplying him with the reminder that he’s waiting for someone right now. There’s no signs of the person he’s waiting for though, and it serves to make Koyanagi feel a little impatient.

He’s not quite sure how much time has passed before he wakes up. When did he even fall asleep in the first place? Koyanagi jolts, brought back to consciousness when something — someone brushes up right next to him. He’s about to shuffle away, make as much distance as he could while sitting on the bench, maybe even grumble something about personal space — though every idea of that dies when flowy lavender hair fills his vision.

Well, that makes a lot more sense. This guy never really did care for things like personal space. Koyanagi glances at his phone’s screen briefly, 10 minutes left before the train is supposed to arrive. Safe.

“You just got here?” The blue-haired rubs at his eyes, making a poor effort to eliminate the rest of his lingering drowsiness. “Yeah, got caught up with my socks.” Hoshirube was evidently a lot more awake than he was right now, making it clear which one between the two of them got a good night’s sleep. Koyanagi wouldn’t even begin to question what exactly he meant by being ‘caught up’ with his socks. Not like he’d get it anyways.

Either way, Hoshirube’s here now. That’s the most important thing.

The purple-haired’s eyes looked like marbles, blueish-grey gently reflecting the slow rising sun’s golden rays. It gave away his excitement, the look on his face he ever had when he was feeling giddy about something. That something being their little escapade today.

Apparently, Inami had won two tickets to an art museum from a raffle he entered on a whim — but he was going to attend a concert on the day that it was valid for with Hibachi Mana. So the tickets were given to Hoshirube, who, despite a lot of protest from the blue-haired — invited Koyanagi along with him.

Upon being informed that he’d have to be up by seven in the morning to catch the train there, Koyanagi wasn’t exactly thrilled to say the least — considering he didn’t want to go in the first place. Maybe he’s a lot more willing to do things for Hoshirube than he thought he was, which was something that he’d have to unpack later on. After all, he did agree to go, and he did show up anyway. He quickly snaps out of his thoughts, having spaced out while drowning in them without realizing it. Next to him, Hoshirube was looking at his phone — probably at a video of small animals or something.

The train pulls up to the station not long after and Hoshirube’s basically flying out of his seat the moment it arrives. He stood eagerly in front of Koyanagi, like an impatient little kid. “Come on.” Even his voice was dripping with euphoria, urging him to get up. Koyanagi does his best to keep up with Hoshirube’s pace, even though the train was definitely not leaving any moment soon. The two of them get on and land two seats next to each other, back in a similar position to when they were on the benches. People pile on to the carriage, filling up seats and standing space, then the train is pulling away from the station soon after.

The ride is relatively quiet, soft mutters coming from people around them. It was still early in the morning after all, Koyanagi doesn’t expect people to be conversing much anyways. Not like he was planning on it either. Hoshirube still looked like he was buzzing with excitement next to him, checking the tickets in his hand.

Koyanagi knows Hoshirube has an interest in places like these. Museums, ancient historical locations, contemporary and abstract artwork — it made sense for a guy like him to like things like that. Seeing him all excited was pretty cute actually, even if he didn’t see the appeal in it himself. It took a couple more thoughts for him to come to the conclusion that he doesn’t quite mind being dragged out with Hoshirube, if it means they could spend some time together doing things that don't require much thought.

“Hmm. It says it’s this way.” They get off at the station that’s not far from the museum itself, but it does take some walking to get there. Hoshirube’s holding his phone out with a map on it, and starts walking off the way the arrow points towards. Koyanagi hurriedly caught up, peeking over to look at the map as well.

“You’re sure this way is right?”

“You don’t trust me?”

It wasn’t as if he didn’t trust Hoshirube with directions, it’s just that they’ve gotten lost one too many times when the purple-haired man was in charge of directing to trust him entirely.

In the end, Koyanagi took the phone from him anyway, and has Hoshirube hold on to the strap of his backpack as they walk just in case. It never was possible to take his eyes off of him for too long. Kind of like he was looking after a puppy.

They end up at the museum anyway, much to Koyanagi’s relief. He returns Hoshirube’s phone and they’re making their way in with the tickets in hand. Inside, it was as much as Koyanagi had expected for a museum. Quiet, not a lot of people walking around with things put on display.

Now, it was his turn to follow Hoshirube around. Most of the paintings were intricate, abstract. He doesn’t quite get it, but Hoshirube seems to be getting lost in each and every one. Koyanagi wasn’t getting bored though, watching the purple-haired’s expression warp as he admired each piece was entirely more fascinating than the artwork itself. Maybe he should be put in a museum too.

No, Hoshirube’s way too precious to be kept in a museum.
Hoshirube turns to look at Koyanagi — head tilted with a small smile. “I like this one.” He says for practically each one, but Koyanagi nods along anyways. “What about it do you like?” Koyanagi asks, and in return gets a ramble from Hoshirube that he listens to intently. He has different thoughts about each one, even though Koyanagi doesn’t seem to think any differently about each piece.

“What about you?” Hoshirube returned the question back to him, and all he could offer was a shrug. “I don’t really get it.” He doesn’t pry any further, just smiling a little wider and walking off to look at the next one.

It’s the same question after each piece that Hoshirube admires, yet Koyanagi doesn’t find himself getting bored. This was the closest he could get into peering into the mind of the elusive Hoshirube after all. Though, he must’ve ended up blanking out on accident, getting too absorbed into his own thoughts again. Hoshirube’s smile tugged down a little, nearly a frown.

“Don’t get this one either?”

“Mm.” Koyanagi shrugs his shoulders.

Hoshirube doesn’t seem offended by his answer.

By the end of it, they’ve ended up back at the entrance. It was still early, courtesy of having gotten here early in the first place — so they opted for a meal together. They stop by a small hole-in-the-wall place, somewhere Hoshirube had found on his own without many people.

“Did you have fun?” Koyanagi asks before their food arrives — even though he already knows the answer. Hoshirube’s face during their entire trip told it all.

“I did. Did you?” His response to the question back takes a moment. To say that he didn’t would be a lie. Sure, he didn’t really understand the appeal of the art in the museum, but listening to Hoshirube talk about the artwork in his own perspective, their journey to the museum itself, sitting here and waiting for their food — it was all pretty fun.

“Yeah, I did.”

Of course he did. How could he not when Hoshirube’s around?
