Clutch, Then Gear!

Summary:

A series of short fics set in a world where Angel stays human in IWRY and he and Buffy get to be happy.

Buffy drives Angel to get medical attention after the fight with Mohra. What could go wrong?

Notes:

This picks up after Soul Purpose, the first fic in this series.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Angel hadn't stopped protesting since she got behind the wheel of the car. Buffy didn't know what hurt him more, the beating he'd taken or her driving.

“Buffy, clutch, then gear! Clutch, then gear!” he said.

With no regard to his increasingly desperate pleas, Buffy ignored the clutch and shifted the gear stick. Angel winced as the grinding crunch of metal on metal echoed from the gearbox. Buffy thought the colour actually drained from his face under the mottled bouquet of bruises that had started to bloom across his cheeks and jawline.

“Since when are you such a car bro?” she asked.

“Since they were invented," he said, fingers digging into the seat. "Christ! Watch the lampost!”

Oops!

Buffy swerved from the sidewalk, crossing over into the lane of oncoming traffic. A cacophony of horns erupted around them.

She remained undeterred and allowed the car to slowly roll to a stop on the wrong side of the street. The front left wheel perched perilously on the pavement, while the rest of the car jutted awkwardly into the road.

The car now parked to her satisfaction, Buffy turned to Angel, the triumphant expression on her face met the breathless horror of his.

“See, I told you I could get us here in one piece.”

Notes:

So, I'm trying something with this. I have more "Big" stories than I can count, and they are all currently trapped in the WIP graveyard. I want to get better at finishing stories but that's hard when nearly every project you are working on is multi-chapter, or multi-book.

This is my attempt to develop the skill of finishing stories by posting short, drabble(ISH) fics regularly. They won't be perfect, which is also the point. Already I had to talk myself down from not posting this because I had an idea of something that should come before it. Which is exactly the kinda of habit that has me posting one fic a decade.

So, the work will be short, and random, and probably rough. As such, I am open to constructive criticism if anyone sees something they think should be called out. The ultimate goal for me is to get better at writing.

I'd like to be posting these every week but I'm gonna manage my own expectations and say at least once a month for now.
