[Podfic] False Friends by IvyLee

Summary:

Podfic. In linguistics, a false friend is a word in a different language that sounds similar to a word in your own, but differs significantly in meaning. No word in any Eridian language could possibly be mistaken for English. But Erid absolutely has false friends.

In his right mind, Grace would easily identify the mistaken assumptions inhibiting his integration on Erid. They are:

1: A molecular biologist and a sapient rock can cobble together translation software that reflects the etymological nuance of an entire alien language.
2: Eridians are enough like humans to have an area 51 and look forward to using it.

Unfortunately, Grace hasn’t been in his right mind in years.

Or: a ‘Return to Erid’ story where Grace struggles to touch down alone.

Hi there! I am so excited. This is my first work in Project Hail Mary, and this fic just completely unraveled my socks. When I first read the book I was delighted by the first contact and language stuff, my favorite kind of SF. That gets explored here and it really, really works.

I've always had a sort of policy of using only my voice, no music or effects. It's just a style thing really. I can almost always convey things like thoughts vs. dialogue, or telepathic speech, or computer glitches or etc., in the performance. I like the challenge! That said... Admiral... there be Eridians here. And I really like the effect they use in the audiobook. I've done my best to approximate it.

I had to make a few decisions about how to handle Eridian numbers. I decided to pronounce cursive-L as "la," and the turned-A as "ah". They just sound/feel more like numbers to me. Less unwieldy. More wieldy. :)

I hope you enjoy!

Update: I will also be recording the other stories in this series, Returned in Kind and Project Long Shot! Stay tuned.
