Chapter Text
Max Hatter. Son of Maddox Hatter, biggest villain of Auradon since Maleficent. Terrorizing kingdoms in search of a time traveling pocket watch. Banished to the isle with his son made him even more mad. His son no less either.
So when the Auradon invitation came, Maddox let his son go without second thoughts. There he tried to be kind, but with everyone looking down on him and the other VK’s, the group of five chose to stay in their own circle. Well, if they wanted villains they’d be villains.
Max went a bit overboard with this. Creating little mechanical creatures to scare the lunch lady’s, playing ungodly and deafening alarms at random, his worst one yet though was the end of his sophomore year. When he caused a giant explosion of glitter and paint in the tourney field. With such force, some people actually had to be sent to the infirmary.
He had to take remedial good 101 for the whole summer..
That was in the past though. The VK has no idea how he hasn’t been expelled. From what he’s heard, Evie had almost gotten expelled for using her magic mirror to help in science. Well, times change with Uma in charge.
Now he’s in her office.
“Now, Max. I know you don’t get along with the other students. Maybe except the other Vk’s. They didn’t do anything that bad these past two years. Now, I want you to try to be…better,” Max scoffed at those words, “now listen. I did this with Hazel before, and it seemed to work out. So…”
Max tilted his head, wondering what she decided to do with him this time.
“I’m having you show around a new transfer student. He’ll be at your first period.”
“Also,” Uma continued. “just to note. He’s like..a few months younger than you. I think he’s 15.”
”And he’s in my chemistry class?”
”Exceptional grades and whatnot,” the headmistress shrugged. “Now go to your class.”
”You can’t actually be serious, right?” Max scoffed.
Uma laughed, “of course I am, now get your ass down to your chemistry class.”
”You can’t say that to a child,” Max acted offended.
The headmistress laughed and then leaned closer, “listen, between me and your dad, I would’ve eaten his ass up like the whale eating pinocchio. And we both know, Vk to Vk, that we’ve said worse. Now get to class.”
That sure as hell scared Max. He quickly got up and scrambled to the door.
”Just so you know, that boys gonna be crying and running out of here when I’m done,” he barks before leaving.
At chemistry, he found that he was actually early. The only ones there were at a table with each other.
And that was. . . Hazel, his bestfriend, and…Red. Red???
That doesn’t make sense. Red and her crew have been clashing with his own. Well, sure Felix had been getting along with Robbie, and Squirmy with Pink, but Hazel, Squeaky, and himself haven’t betrayed their group.
Robbie Hood, son of Robin Hood, was one of the kids sent to the infirmary from the glitter bomb incident. He was an expect archer and a pro fencer.
Felix Facilier was the exact opposite, so he had no idea how the card reader fell for his stupid ass charms.
Pink was Red’s younger sister, overly sweet, a baker, and tries to be friends with everyone. And she’s persistent.
Hell, Squirmy fell for her half way through last year. That was another Vk down. At least it was one of the stupid ones this time. His brother Squeaky was just following Hazel around.
Hazel Hook is Max’s best friend. Pirate, boss of the Smee twins, feared among students and the seas. But..Max noticed his best friend starting to grow soft. The way she smiled more, actually enjoyed her time in class, and actually did her work. It was shocking. Especially because she was extremely smart as well.
There was also Chloe Charming. On the fencing team with Robbie, Red’s best friend, and one of the perfect princess nepo-babies. She always followed rules to the point it was annoying…
Lastly, Red. Sparkly princess of Hearts. All the straight guys and lesbian’s dream girl. Lover of bows, glitter, and everything heart related. Well, now, this year it seemed different. There was no gaudy dress, no glitter everywhere, and no big goody smile. She looked a lot more like a Vk.
“What do you want Max?” Red leaned back in her chair.
”I want to know why you’re in my seat, next to my best friend.”
”Awh. You gonna cry? Sorry. I’m sitting here today. The headmistress kinda explained that you’re showing a kid around today too, so..might as well sit with them,” Red leaned back in her chair. Wow. Something really must’ve happened during summer. Even Hazel seemed shocked.
“Geez Red…” the pirate sounded stunned.
”Oh! Sorry! You can sit in front of Hazel!” Red switched into some fake cheer.
Well, Max didn’t like that. Not at all. But he had to suck it up. He threw his bag to his feet when sitting at his chair.
”How was remedial summer classes?” Hazel leaned forward.
”He was in..summer classes?” Red asked.
Okay, now it’s more confusing. Red saw Robbie blow up in purple paint and glitter, how could she forget?
”Yeah, remember..the glitter bomb incident,” Hazel nudged her.
”Ohhhh! Right!” the princess nodded.
The Vk’s shared a glance before the door opened once more. And it wasn’t anyone recognizable.
A tall, curly-haired boy in a yellow embroidered vest came walking through, his eyes locking with the three already in the room.
Oh my.
Oh my.
The boy was breathtaking. Max didn’t know why, but it was like a whole new world appeared and color spread to even the darkest of areas of this god forsaken place.
He felt his heart beating faster and faster against his ribs, his face beginning to burn, and-
“Hatter!” Red called out, “quit your staring. Isn’t this the kid you’re supposed to be helping?”
The Vk finally snapped out of his trance to see that the new boy had walked closer, leaning on the table next to in front of his.
“Uhm. .hi. I’m Luis. Luis Madrigal,” he offered his hand.
Max began stammering and stuttering until finding the words he needed, “Max Hatter. Son of Maddox Hatter,” he gleamed, well, tried. Being that man’s son wasn’t something he was very proud of. But, he was expecting a reaction from him, anything.
But Luis just nodded.
”I’m the son of Luisa Madrigal.”
“Wait so,” Hazel chimed in, “you live all the way in Encanto, and you have the candle gift thing?”
The Hk nodded, “yeah.! We’re..actually not too sure on what my gift is, but we’re figuring it out,” he scratched the back of his head.
Something in Red clicked, “so..you’re-OH!” everyone turned to her, “Chloe told me about the new generation stuff in that town, the candle being wonky for the first kid, right?”
Luis looked a little hurt when he heard Red say that, “way to rub salt in the wound,” he tries to joke it off.
Hazel hit her on the arm lightly, “geez princess, you’ve really changed..”
The princess only shrugged as she turned back, she was the first to notice Max continuing to stare at Luis. The look on his face was different too. Specifically the little glint in his eye.
“Max!” he snapped, and turned to Red, “geez. Are you okay?”
The purple-haired boy straightened up, clearing his throat before speaking, “yeah- yeah. Perfectly fine.”
The other three just looked at him. Before they could say anything, more people and the teacher began flooding into class.
As class went on, Max tried to focus as much as he could, though, it was just icebreakers and the syllabus. Well, he couldn’t focus. He found that his focus was more on the boy next to him.
Luis looked good while he was focused. . . the way his brows furrowed, the way he bit his lip when trying to pay attention, all of it . .
That was the main thing he could think about till he was occasionally called on to say his name and share a fun fact. He really did hate icebreakers.
When class ended, Max walked out with Luis right behind him.
”So, what class do you have next?” Max looks to him.
The brunette checked his schedule, “some ap history class.”
”AP History of Auradon? Hazels in that class too, c’mon,” and without intention, Max grabs Luis’ hand and starts dragging him away before he could say anything.
The VK noticed a little too late as to what he just did. The two had gotten to the class, still hand in hand(not by Luis’ choice..) while Hazel leaned onto the wall next to the class door. The moment she saw them she smirked.
”Well, look at you being friendly with the new kid,” she placed a hand to Max’s shoulder and looked to their hands. Max’s hand wrapped around Luis’.
The moment the Vk boy caught on he yelped and shook his hand free, Luis just stepping back. Max could swear his face was burning red.
“So…you’re in AP history too?” was all Luis could mutter while scratching the back of his neck. He does that lot, Max noticed.
”Yeah. I’m a little surprised they let you do it. ‘specially since you’re new.”
”Eh,” the HK shrugged, “they had me take a test.”
The pirate nodded, “I’ll take him for the period Max, you can go now.”
The boy looked over and nodded while immediately rushing to his next class.
He had Magical Artifacts 101. Basically a class that teaches you about. . . magical artifacts used in history and what they could do. Like Fairy Godmother’s wand. And Jafar’s staff. Max always wondered when his fathers Oraculum was going to end up here.
While trying to focus in that class, it was a lot harder than usual. Even Felix noticed it.
His mind kept moving to the new boy. Luis Madrigal. The fluke in the candle system. He recalls the nervousness, the confusion on his face, and he quickly picked up on some of his habits. Scratching the back of his neck, fiddling with his thu- wait. . . why does he know this!?!?
Max tried to shake it off, but his seat partner and last year roommate definitely noticed.
“Yo, Max, you good? You don’t usually zone out like that,” Felix whispered, “but it looked more like somethings on your mind.
“What?!?” Max began whispering back.
”I’m just tired since I have to show some new kid around.”
The card reader nodded. He glanced at Max in concern, but eventually left him to be.
Again though, he couldn’t keep himself from thinking of Luis. No matter how hard he tried. And when he did there was just some warm and fuzzy feeling inside of him. God… what could it be?
