Stitches

Summary:

Blue is shutting down for the night when they get one last unlikely patient.

Notes:

Idk how to write Blue's dialogue properly lol so forgive me if it's not nearly as elegant as they are in the show

Work Text:

Blue dismissed Yellow to return back to the kitchens, having just dressed their wounds. A small cut, nothing to worry about really, but they were more than happy to take utmost care of their Crewmates. Yellow thanked them on their way out and Blue went back to their inventory. Mira HQ really provided them with nothing. They sighed majestically.

“Oh if only we had proper medical equipment so I may do my duty and serve my crew to my full abilities,” they monologued. They scanned the cabinets and took note of what they needed. Disinfectant, bandages, antibiotics…all the things they’ve used a lot of lately. They would need to stock twice as much on the next supply stop.

Blue glanced up at the time and realized how late it was getting. Most of the crew was probably asleep by now, say for Green and Yellow who they knew were busy cleaning. They decided it was about time they got some rest as well. Blue shut down the machines and the computer, but just as they were about to turn out the lights they heard a creaking sound from behind them.

They whipped around to see Lime poking out of the vent, one of their hands picking at the floor nervously. Blue lit up at seeing them, rarely getting the opportunity to as they didn't like coming into the medbay. Or leaving the vent at all, honestly.

“Lime!” Blue exclaimed with a lot more enthusiasm than they intended. “What brings you to the medbay this fine evening?”

“Eh…I uh…” Lime stammered. “I sorta got a…hm."

Lime pulled their other hand out of the vent and Blue could immediately see a large gash along their palm, blood dripping onto the polished white floors. Blue was taken aback at such a serious wound, but even more so that Lime had actually come to let them take care of it.

“Oh dear! Lime, that is a terrible injury!” Blue exclaimed, quickly grabbing some supplies. “It is a good thing you came here to let me take care of it, it could easily become infected!”

“Yeah yeah, whatever,” Lime snapped. “Can you patch me up already?”

“Of course, Lime. Thank you for trusting me to do this.”

Lime blushed and looked away, mumbling. “Don’t make such a big deal out of it…”

Blue carefully cleaned up the blood around the wound and dabbed it with disinfectant, getting a small hiss from Lime. They apologized for not warning them as they pulled out stitches and began to stitch the gash closed. Blue wanted to ask how something like this happened, but they didn’t press. Lime was more likely to just leave if they started asking questions.

Once the stitches were finished, Blue wrapped Lime’s hand in a bandage to protect it from the dirt and grime of the vents Lime spent most of their time in. “Try to be careful Lime, don’t stress that hand too much or you’ll tear your stitches.”

Lime looked away and nodded slowly, blushing. Blue was still holding their hand, which was surprisingly soft despite their difficult job. Blue really respected everything they did for the crew, being on call whenever they needed their expertise. Lime cleared their throat and pulled their hand away, quickly ducking back into the vent and mumbling various goodbyes. Blue sighed and watched them leave, wishing they had stayed a little longer but knowing they didn’t like being here.

One day, Blue, one day, they thought to themself as they put the last of the supplies away and turned the lights out for the night.
