Penance in a Pooling Pale Blue Sea

Summary:

It’s Father’s Day, and the Batfamily decide to show Dick Grayson the appreciation he deserves. Bruce heard the conversation- he didn’t mean to listen in… Bruce had hurt them all so much, he needed to repent.

-

Bruce and Dick had an argument. Clark wasn’t particularly worried about that in and of itself- but the scent of dropping lingering on Bruce made Clark wonder if it was really time for an off world mission.

It didn’t make any sense- why would Bruce take this argument as Pack rejection? Dick didn’t mean it, he rarely meant what he said. But now Bruce was gone.

-

Or,

Following the Batfamily gifting Dick Grayson a Father’s Day present, Bruce Wayne’s Omega interprets the act as pack rejection, sending him into a violent dropping episode. When an omega drops, it their relationship with their pack isn’t mended they rapidly sink into a deep depression often followed by death.

Bruce decides to kill himself before that happens, not knowing Clark will bring him back as many times as it takes.

Chapter 1: Arguments

Chapter Text

”You just can’t seem to get it in your head- can you?!” Dick felt rage claw at his throat with a desperation unlike any he’d ever felt.

Why? Why was Bruce so stubborn, why did he so vehemently refuse to allow Dick a single freedom in this stupid house?

”Every time I come back here I’m reminded why I left you. Why I left the pack-”

Bruce seemed to physically withdraw, eyebrows pinching. ”You’re still pack, Dick-”

”No! the others are pack- they’re my family. But you? You stopped being my family the second you asked me to step away from the Robin mantle.” It wasn’t true. Dick could feel the way his bond with Bruce- with his father- pulled desperately at the denouncement of their relationship. But something in Dick’s chest wanted Bruce to suffer- perhaps it wasn’t fair, no no- it wasn’t fair. But it felt good.

”I just wanted to keep you safe.”

”You wanted to control me.”

”I’m your father-”

NO-” Dick growled. Growled at his own father. At the pack omega. What were they even arguing about again? ”All you were all those years was my fucking prison warden.” He stepped in closer, anger seeping off of him in droves, scent souring and lips curling back to reveal his canines. ”you should’ve let me be adopted by some normal family- a normal omega mother probably actually would have been able to raise me well, instead of being unstable, aggressive, and cruel like you.”

Was that necessary? Probably not. But ever since Clark decided to mate Bruce, and it was a fantastic question as to why on earth he would choose Bruce - Dick knew why, anyone would. Bruce was fantastic. Kind. Gentle - Bruce had been acting more Omega-like.

He purred now- he had never purred for Dick unless they were cuddled up on the couch. Now just a brush of the wrist in the morning was enough to elicit the sound.

Bruce would go around scenting their things- Dick had to explain three separate times to the titans that he wasn’t mated. That it was his fathers scent.

Suddenly Bruce wanted to have scheduled family time in the nest- he’d never wanted that when it was just him and Dick.

Wasn’t he enough? Wasn’t Dick enough for Bruce to relax and purr? To want to scent him and mark him as pack? to want to spend time together regularly?

Clark got all of that.

But Bruce wasn’t a stereotypical omega. He wasn’t. Dick knew that. But but-

”You get your stupid new Alpha and suddenly you want to be a parent? Yeah. No.” Dick growled again, he could scent Bruce’s pheromones depleting in the room, drawing back in the way Alfred said it used to when Bruce was younger. ”I’m not- we’re not accessories Bruce, you can’t choose when you want to have children and when you don’t.”

”I’m sorry Dick- I.. shit” Bruce’s eyes shook and he steadied himself against the kitchen island. His breath stuttered. Bruce didn’t cry though. Dick didn’t think he was capable of that. ”I can change- I’ll do what you want, but I don’t think I understand- I don’t want to force you to visit when I know you’re busy, but you also want that? I don’t understand-”

”Welll you should! A real fucking parent would just fucking know- a pack leader, a pack omega should fucking know what a pack needs- isn’t that like your job?!”

Dick felt sick. Wrong. He didn’t mean it- please please he didn’t mean it, he wanted his dad to hug him and tell him it was all okay. But his dad’s legs were shaking and his breath was hitching.

His heart clenched and his instincts stung like a bullet to the head. His sinuses seemed to pulse- was it something he was scenting which he couldn’t fully pick up? Everything in him wanted to take it back- but..

”I can’t keep doing this, I can’t keep fucking doing this.” Dick muttered. He took a few long strides to the hallway, leaving his dad in the kitchen. He made eyecontact with him once through the archway to the mainfloor kitchen. The blue of Bruce’s eyes seemed to swallow his pupils whole- could he even see Dick right now?

Dick turned to shrug on his jacket.

Then he left.

Bruce would understand.

Dick would only make things worse by staying, of that he was sure. It was better if he stayed away. He needed to cool off.
