Chapter Text

The heat hadn't broken. It had only transformed into something wild, ravenous, and endless.

Time inside the Duke’s canopy bed had long since dissolved into a breathless blur of damp silk, bruised skin, and the raw, slick friction of a newborn bond that refused to settle.

The air in the chamber was suffocating, heavy with the intoxicating collision of Cale’s sweet, aged red wine and Kim Rok Soo’s overwhelming Alpha aura—a suffocating tide of polished cedar, aging paper, and glowing amber.

They couldn't stop.

The moment the claiming bite had sealed their fates on the riverbank, their instincts had completely taken over, driving them straight into a feverish, desperate loop where every touch felt like a physical spark.

Cale’s back arched off the tangled sheets in a sharp, involuntary surrender, his pale skin flushed a deep, rose-gold from the embers of the hearth.

His fingers dug frantically into the broad, muscle-bound expanse of Rok Soo’s back, nails dragging down damp skin, leaving thin red lines in their wake.

Every time Cale tried to draw a full breath, every time he thought his body had reached the absolute limit of what an Omega could endure, Rok Soo’s broad, calloused hands would tighten mercilessly on his hips, indenting soft skin and pinning him right back down into the mattress.

"Rok Soo—ah! Wait—" Cale gasped out, his voice utterly ruined, raspy and frayed at the edges.

"Can't," Rok Soo rasped against his skin, the word a low, wrecked growl that vibrated straight through Cale’s spine.

The lazy, exhausted Alpha who had contemplated sleeping in a tree to avoid the Mating Run was entirely gone.

In his place was a creature possessed by a quiet, unyielding greed.

Rok Soo’s heavy body pressed Cale flat, trapping him in the slick heat between them.

His mouth was everywhere—dragging fire over Cale’s jaw, biting down lightly on the soft flesh of his shoulder, and trailing heavy, feverish kisses over the pale line of his ribs until Cale was sobbing out breathy, incoherent noises.

"You're completely soaked in me," Rok Soo muttered, his dark eyes unhinged, clouded over with his possessiveness as he dragged a calloused thumb roughly over Cale’s slick, trembling hip bone.

"You broadcasted this wine scent to test if someone would keep you. Well, I'm keeping you. You're mine now."

Every slick roll of Rok Soo's hips drove Cale further past his breaking point.

Even as Cale tried to push at Rok Soo's chest with weak, trembling palms, his Omega instincts betrayed him instantly.

The moment Rok Soo shifted back just a fraction of an inch to draw a ragged breath, Cale’s hips subconsciously rolled forward, desperately seeking the overwhelming, deep friction his body was screaming for.

He was starving for the Alpha’s weight, hopelessly addicted to the heavy cedar scent wrapping around his senses like iron bands.

Rok Soo let out a low, dark huff against Cale's throat at the gesture, his grip tightening until Cale couldn't move a single inch away.

"You're playing a dangerous game, Cale. Move like that again, and I'm knotting you until every inch of you is completely filled with my scent."

Rok Soo was starving, but he wasn't a monster.

For all the dark, unhinged possessiveness spilling from his mouth moments ago—the low growls threatening to knot him, breed him, and claim every inch of him until he was ruined for anyone else—Rok Soo had no intention of actually crossing that line.

Not yet.

His instincts were practically begging him to lock them together, succumb to a blinding rut, and breed Cale full of his pups right then and there—marking him inside and out—but Rok Soo held the savage urge on an iron leash.

His whole life, Rok Soo had treated his Dominant Alpha nature like an inconvenient background detail.

Other Omegas had thrown themselves at him, bathing him in their sweet scents, yet his blood had remained stone-cold.

He had never felt the urge to bite, mark, or claim a single one of them.

He used to laugh off the ridiculous theories about fated mates and Dominant Alpha possessiveness

—until Cale.

With Cale, every textbook definition of a Dominant Alpha violently slammed into reality.

The sweet wine scent didn't just affect him; it hijacked his entire system, filling his mind with raw, possessive urges to breed his mate, lock him in their nest, and never let him out of sight.

It was a terrifying, instinctual awakening, but even with his Alpha roaring to take control, his care for Cale kept the beast chained.

They were both drowning in the high fever of a newborn bond.

If he knotted Cale now, it would lock them into a days-long cycle of primal haze before they even had a chance to speak a single real word to each other.

Cale deserved more than just being swept away by heat.

Even through the haze of scent and slick friction, Rok Soo tracked every micro-expression on Cale's face.

Rok Soo tracked the helpless tremor running through Cale's entire body.

The Omega was practically glowing with pre-heat—his chest, neck, and cheeks stained a delicate, burning pink.

He looked completely wrecked, dazed beyond reason, his tear-filled eyes unfocused and swimming with helpless, heart-eyed devotion as he stared up at the Alpha towering over him. He was drowning so deeply in the climax that he couldn't even think.

"Rok Soo... Alpha—please—" Cale sobbed, his voice completely wrecked and needy as his back arched off the dark sheets.

His nails bit into Rok Soo's back, his body subconsciously grinding up into Rok Soo's grip, begging for the one thing that would quiet the fever. "Alpha, knot me... please, fill me up with your pups..."

Rok Soo’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached.

The urge to give in—to take everything Cale was offering and seal him to his side forever—almost shattered his sanity.

Instead, Rok Soo lowered his massive frame, shifting his weight onto his elbows so he wouldn't crush the trembling Omega.

His broad, calloused hands softened their grip on Cale's hips, his thumbs stroking soothing, steady patterns into Cale's slick, flushed skin.

"Look at me, Cale," Rok Soo growled, his voice a low, raspy rumble thick with suppressed desire, pressing right against Cale’s ear.

Cale’s eyelashes fluttered open, his vision swimming with tears of sheer sensory overload.

Through the dazed amber haze of his heat, he met Rok Soo’s dark, intensely focused eyes.

"Not yet," Rok Soo muttered, his hot breath fanning across Cale’s damp cheek.

He leaned down, his mouth brushing Cale's lips in a kiss that was surprisingly tender, tasting the faint, sweet trace of red wine before trailing down to the base of his throat.

"We're both out of our minds on instinct right now. I meant every word I said, Cale... but we need to talk first."

"You... absolute bastard," Cale gasped out, a translucent, frustrated noise escaping his throat.

But as Rok Soo pulled back from the edge, something inside Cale shattered—not from pleasure, but from a sudden, terrifying spike of Omega insecurity.

The high fever of the heat was already beginning to recede, leaving behind a cold, hollow vacuum.

In his dazed, hyper-vulnerable state, his fogged mind twisted Rok Soo’s refusal into the absolute worst possible conclusion.

He doesn't want me.

A soft, pathetic whine tore from Cale's throat, his flushed chest heaving as tears welled up and spilled over his lashes.

"You... you don't want to knot me," he whimpered, his voice small, trembling, and completely broken. "Am I... am I a bad mate? Is my scent... not good for you...?"

Rok Soo’s heart practically stopped.

The raw, desperate heartbreak in Cale’s voice hit him harder than any Alpha challenge ever could.

"Cale—no. No, Cale, look at me," Rok Soo growled softly, his voice dropping into a deep, soothing rumble meant purely to calm a distressed mate.

He immediately abandoned his position, lowering himself completely to press his chest against Cale's, enveloping the shivering Omega in his warmth.

He cupped Cale's flushed face in his broad hands, his thumbs gently wiping away the tears.

"Listen to me. That is the dumbest thing you've ever said."

Cale turned his head slightly, trying to hide his face in Rok Soo's palm, a shuddering breath escaping him as the emotional drop dragged him under. "Then why... why won't you...?"

"Because I want you so badly it’s taking every ounce of my sanity not to lock us in this room for a week," Rok Soo murmured, his dark eyes fierce with unwavering devotion as he pressed a lingering, tender kiss to Cale's forehead, then his eyelids, and finally his lips.

"You're perfect, Cale. Your scent is driving me insane. I'm stopping because I care about you, not because I don't want you."

Rok Soo shifted his weight, gathering Cale’s trembling frame securely against his chest, locking his heavy cedar wood scent around him like a protective shield against the crash.

"Last one for now," Rok Soo rasped against Cale's skin, soothing the lingering panic with a deep, deliberate stroke that sent a shudder straight through Cale's spine, anchoring him completely in safety.

As Cale gasped, Rok Soo’s teeth found the tender, swollen mark on his neck—biting down firmly enough to anchor Cale through the crest, but holding back just enough so he wouldn't trigger a rut.

Through the bond, a wave of pure, heavy cedar and warm amber flooded Cale's senses, drowning out every last trace of panic and leaving only absolute safety.

Cale’s back arched in a final, shattered surrender, his cry echoing softly in the room as the tide broke over them.

Rok Soo held him tight, pulling back from the brink through sheer willpower, breathing heavy and possessive into Cale’s collarbone as the feverish frenzy finally settled into a fragile silence.

As the lingering electric buzz of the climax began to drain, the sudden sub-drop hit Cale like a freight train.

The feverish heat that had been consuming his blood precipitously plummeted, leaving his body cold, clammy, and utterly drained.

His muscles, strained from holding so much tension, began to tremble uncontrollably.

A soft, pathetic shiver racked Cale’s frame.

The hyper-sensitivity of his skin made the cool air in the room feel almost abrasive against his damp, flushed skin.

Dazed and overwhelmed, Cale instinctively curled inward, pulling his knees toward his chest in a submissive, defensive ball as a small, exhausted whimpering sound escaped his throat.

Rok Soo felt the shift instantly.

Without a moment's hesitation, Rok Soo pulled his weight back and carefully maneuvered his body.

He gathered Cale’s trembling, limp frame into his arms, pulling the smaller man directly against his chest.

He dragged the heavy duvet over them both, swallowing Cale in a cocoon of dark fabric and suffocating warmth.

"Shh... I've got you. I'm right here," Rok Soo rumbled, his voice dropping an octave into that deep, soothing Alpha register designed to instantly settle a distressed mate.

He wrapped his massive arm securely around Cale’s waist, locking him tight against his chest so Cale could feel the steady, heavy beat of his heart.

With his free hand, Rok Soo gently stroked Cale's messy, sweat-damp red hair away from his forehead, pressing tender, lingering kisses to his temple, his cheek, and the corner of his eye to catch the stray tears still slipping down.

Cale gasped softly at the contact, his senses swimming as he was completely engulfed by Rok Soo’s scent.

Through the newborn bond, Rok Soo unleashed a thick, warm wave of grounded cedar and rich amber—flooding the space between them with absolute safety and dominance.

"R-Rok Soo..." Cale mumbled, his voice tiny and raspy.

He weakly reached out, his blunt nails clutching tightly at the fabric of Rok Soo’s shirt over his chest, burying his face directly into the crook of Rok Soo’s neck.

He inhaled deeply, desperately chasing the scent mark to quiet the lingering tremors in his limbs. "Don't... don't leave..."

"Not going anywhere," Rok Soo promised softly, his broad hand moving down to rub firm, warm circles into the small of Cale's back. "You did so well, Cale. Just breathe. You're completely safe with me."

As the heavy Alpha scent saturated his senses, the terrifying hollow feeling in Cale's chest finally began to heal.

His shivering slowed, his tensed shoulders melted into Rok Soo's broad frame, and his heavy eyelids fluttered shut, thoroughly anchored by the steady warmth of his mate.

The sharp edge of the drop slowly melted into a quiet, cozy stillness.

With Cale finally relaxed and breathing in a long, slow rhythm against his chest, Rok Soo knew they couldn't stay in the damp, tangled sheets.

He wanted Cale comfortable, warm, and entirely pampered.

Moving with painstaking care, Rok Soo eased himself back, shifting Cale slightly so he could slip out from under the duvet.

The moment the physical contact broke, Cale let out a small, miserable whine, his hands blindly reaching across the mattress.

"I'm right here," Rok Soo murmured instantly, catching Cale's hand and pressing a lingering kiss to his knuckles.

"A damp towel isn't going to cut it. Let's get you in a warm bath, okay?"

Before Cale could fully process the words, Rok Soo gently scooped him up into his arms, carrying the limp Omega into the adjoining master bathroom.

He set Cale down carefully on the plush bathmat, wrapping a thick, dry towel around his shivering shoulders before turning on the faucet to fill the large soaking tub with warm water.

"Stay right here. Don't move," Rok Soo instructed softly.

He stepped back into the bedroom just long enough to strip the damp, heavy linens off the mattress, then toss them aside and efficiently pull fresh, clean sheets over the bed.

By the time he walked back into the bathroom, the tub was full, and the room was thick with soothing, warm steam.

Rok Soo stepped into the water first, then reached out to gently lift Cale, settling the smaller man securely between his legs so Cale’s back rested flush against his broad chest.

Cale let out a long, trembling sigh as the warm water enveloped them both, the soothing heat instantly melting away the last of his muscle tension.

For a long time, the only sound was the gentle sloshing of water—and a low, rhythmic vibration echoing softly against Rok Soo’s chest.

Cale was purring.

It was a faint, continuous rumble deep in the Omega's throat, an involuntary reaction to being so thoroughly safe and cherished.

Rok Soo took a soft sponge and a mild, unscented soap, methodically and reverently washing the sweat and slick from Cale’s skin.

He cleaned the sensitive, swollen skin around Cale's nape with feather-light touches, working down his shoulders, chest, and trembling thighs, the steady purr humming louder whenever Rok Soo’s hands soothed a particularly tender spot.

Cale, melting entirely into the pampering, drowsily lifted his hands.

With clumsy, exhausted affection, he took the sponge from Rok Soo, weakly dragging it over his Alpha's broad chest and thick shoulders.

It was a small, purely instinctual gesture of a mate wanting to groom his partner in return—a sweet, drowsy reciprocity accompanied by that soft, contented purr—and it made Rok Soo’s chest ache with overwhelming fondness.

Once they were clean and thoroughly warmed, Rok Soo drained the tub and helped Cale out, wrapping him in a massive, fluffy towel.

He dried Cale with meticulous care, making sure every inch of him was warm before pulling out a small tube of medicinal ointment from the cabinet.

"This might sting for a second, but it will help," Rok Soo warned softly.

Cale hummed sleepily, leaning against the counter.

Rok Soo knelt in front of him, his large hands impossibly gentle as he applied the cooling, soothing ointment to Cale’s bruised hips and, with the utmost care and respect, to his swollen entrance.

Cale let out a tiny, breathless whine at the intrusion, his hands gripping Rok Soo’s shoulders, but the sharp sting immediately gave way to a deep, numb relief.

There was nothing sexual in the touch—only the pure, devoted care of an Alpha ensuring his mate wasn't hurting.

Since they were in Rok Soo's room, Rok Soo didn't even bother looking for Cale's clothes.

He pulled out one of his own oversized, soft cotton shirts and carefully guided Cale’s limp arms through the sleeves.

The shirt swallowed Cale’s smaller frame entirely, the hem dropping past his mid-thigh.

More importantly, it smelled overwhelmingly of Rok Soo’s grounding cedar and amber.

Cale immediately buried his nose into the collar, his Omega instincts thoroughly satisfied by being draped in his Alpha's scent.

Rok Soo carried him back out to the bedroom, laying him down gently in the center of the fresh, crisp bedsheets.

He climbed in beside him, pulling the plush duvet over them both, and Cale instantly chased the heat, throwing his leg over Rok Soo’s thigh and burying his face directly into the crook of Rok Soo’s neck.

"Better?" Rok Soo whispered, his hand resting warm and heavy against Cale's waist, his thumb gently stroking the oversized fabric of the shirt.

Cale snuggled deeper, practically inhaling his Alpha's scent until his whole chest bloomed with warm comfort. The lingering heat haze was completely gone, leaving his mind clear, relaxed, and utterly safe.

"Yeah..." Cale murmured, his voice soft, quiet, and deeply contented. "Much better, Alpha."

Rok Soo’s heart swelled, a small, genuine smile tugging at his lips as he kissed Cale's temple once more.

The storm had passed, leaving them wrapped in quiet warmth, perfectly setting the stage for the words they still needed to speak.

The moment Cale took his first deep breath, his head spun from the sheer intensity of the air.

The vast master suite was completely, overwhelmingly infused with their scents.

During the heat, their instincts had run completely rampant—Rok Soo’s heavy, rich cedarwood had blanketed every corner, every drape, and every thread of the sheets, while Cale’s sweet, intoxicating wine had soaked into the very walls.

It was a territorial display of the highest order.

The room smelled like a cozy, impenetrable nest where two souls had completely melded together.

Just breathing it in sent a warm, grounding wave of contentment humming straight down Cale's spine through their newborn bond.

The heavy fever of the heat was completely gone, leaving his body feeling pleasantly heavy, warm, and utterly relaxed.

He was still wrapped safely in Rok Soo’s oversized shirt, his face buried deep into the pillow—and right into the crook of Rok Soo’s neck.

Rok Soo’s arm was still pinned over Cale's waist like an iron bar, securing him flush against his chest even in his sleep.

Cale blinked sleepily, taking a moment to absorb the quiet warmth.

Through the newborn bond, he could feel the calm, steady hum of Rok Soo’s sleeping pulse.

Slowly, the memories of the night before came rushing back.

The overwhelming heat, Rok Soo’s unhinged Alpha possessiveness, the sheer restraint it took for Rok Soo to hold back from knotting him, and the tender way he had bathed and cared for him afterward.

And then came the specific details.

Cale’s entire train of thought screeched to a violent halt.

His eyes snapped wide open.

The memories hit him like a physical blow—crying out for his Alpha, practically begging to be bred, purring in the bath like a spoiled housecat, and—god forbid—clumsily scrubbing Rok Soo’s broad chest with a sponge like some dutiful, doting mate.

A wave of sheer, unadulterated embarrassment surged through Cale, turning his pale face a furious, nuclear shade of red.

He was internally combusting.

If the floor opened up and swallowed him whole right now, he would personally thank the earth.

Did I really say 'Knot me, Alpha'?! Did I actually PURR?! Cale screamed internally, hiding his burning face deeper into the pillow, praying to whatever gods were listening that he could simply turn into dust and vanish.

In his quiet, panic-fueled attempt to slowly, discreetly wriggle out of Rok Soo's iron grip, Cale’s knee inadvertently nudged Rok Soo’s thigh.

The small movement instantly stirred the Alpha.

Rok Soo’s dark eyes fluttered open, heavy with sleep.

But instead of letting Cale escape, his arm tightened instinctively around Cale's waist, pulling the bright-red, stiff-as-a-board Omega right back against his chest.

Rok Soo rested his chin atop Cale’s messy red hair, letting out a long, raspy morning rumble. "Morning... Stop squirming, Cale. It's still early."

Cale froze completely, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

He kept his face firmly squished against Rok Soo’s chest so the Alpha couldn't see his flaming cheeks.

"I'm not squirming," Cale squeaked out—his voice pitching slightly higher than usual, betraying his absolute state of mortification.

Rok Soo blinked sleepily, feeling the sudden, frantic spike of embarrassment radiating through their bond.

He pulled back just enough to peer down at Cale, a slow, amused smirk gradually spreading across his face as he took in Cale's bright red ears and wide, traumatized eyes.

"Ah," Rok Soo rumbled low, his voice dripping with playful, affectionate teasing. "So you remember everything from last night, then?"

"Shut up," Cale muffled instantly into the blanket, wishing for a quick and peaceful death. "Not another word out of you, Kim Rok Soo."

Rok Soo let out a low, rumbling chuckle that vibrated straight through Cale’s pressed cheek.

"Not another word?" Rok Soo repeated, his thumb lightly stroking the small of Cale’s back through the oversized shirt. "So I shouldn't bring up how you purred in the bath? Or how you begged your Alpha to—"

"Kim Rok Soo, I swear to god," Cale hissed, finally shooting his head up.

His amber eyes were wide, glaring holes into Rok Soo, though the effect was completely ruined by his flaming red face, messy morning hair, and the fact that he was swallowed whole by Rok Soo’s clothes.

"If you finish that sentence, I will personally ensure you sleep on the couch for the next month."

Rok Soo’s grin only widened, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners with genuine warmth.

Seeing Cale so fiery, clear-headed, and back to his usual sharp self was an incredible relief after the intense, terrifying vulnerability of the night before.

"Fair enough," Rok Soo conceded easily, though his voice was still laced with fond amusement.

He leaned down, pressing a firm, deliberate kiss right to Cale’s hot forehead. "I'll spare you. For now."

Cale grumbled under his breath, though he didn't pull away from the kiss.

In fact, his body subconsciously melted back into Rok Soo’s hold, the initial panic of embarrassment slowly giving way to a comfortable, lingering warmth.

"Are you hungry?" Rok Soo asked softly, his tone shifting into something quieter and more attentive.

His fingers lightly combed through Cale's red bangs, gently soothing the flushed Omega. "Your pre-heat burned through a lot of energy last night. I can make us something warm to eat."

Cale blinked, only now realizing how completely hollow his stomach felt. "Yeah... food sounds good."

"Stay under the blanket," Rok Soo instructed gently. He shifted his weight, easing himself out of the bed.

The momentary loss of Rok Soo's warmth made Cale’s Omega instincts twitch in protest, but the heavy cedar and amber scent clinging to the sheets—and the shirt drowning his body—kept him thoroughly anchored.

Rok Soo pulled on a soft pair of sweatpants before turning back to look at Cale, who was wrapped like a blanket burrito in the middle of the mattress, watching him with quiet, attentive eyes.

"I'll bring breakfast up here," Rok Soo rumbled softly, stepping toward the door. "Take your time waking up."

As the door clicked quietly shut, Cale let out a long, shuddering breath, burying his face back into the collar of Rok Soo's shirt.

His face was still warm, but as he listened to the faint sounds of Rok Soo moving around downstairs, a deep, steady sense of peace washed over him.

He was safe. They were going to talk, but for the first time, Cale wasn't afraid of what that conversation would bring.

A short while later, the rich, savory aroma of freshly brewed tea, crisp bacon, and toasted bread drifted into the bedroom.

Rok Soo pushed the door open with his foot, carrying a heavy wooden tray lined with a feast fit for his starving mate.

He set it down gently on the bedside table, then sat on the edge of the mattress, offering Cale a warm mug of tea first.

Cale sat up, wrapping the duvet around his shoulders like a cape. He took the mug, his fingers brushing against Rok Soo’s, before taking a slow, comforting sip.

As he looked around the quiet room, a sudden, glaring realization hit him.

Kim Rok Soo was the Grand Duke of the North.

He was a Dominant Alpha holding vast territories, commanding legions of knights, and wielding terrifying power.

Yet, ever since Cale had arrived at this townhouse in the capital, where Rok Soo was staying for the royal assemblies, Cale hadn't seen or heard a single servant.

No butler pouring tea.

No maids changing the heavy linens.

Just the Duke himself, clad in simple customized pants (sweatpants), personally hand-cleaning his mate, changing bedsheets, and cooking breakfast from scratch.

Cale blinked, setting his mug down and looking at Rok Soo with genuine, squinting confusion.

"Rok Soo..." Cale started, tilting his head. "Where are your servants?"

Rok Soo paused mid-bite of his toast, looking up. "Servants?"

"Yes. Servants," Cale repeated, gesturing vaguely around the grand, silent master suite.

"You're the Duke of the North. Why are you doing everything yourself? Where is the butler? The chef? Why is a high-ranking Dominant Alpha carrying water basins and frying eggs like a house husband?"

Rok Soo let out a low, huffing laugh, leaning back on his elbow. "This is my private residence in the capital. I don't keep staff here."

"Why?" Cale pressed, eyebrow raised. "You can easily afford an army of servants."

"Because I value my privacy," Rok Soo said simply, his dark eyes softening as he reached over to slide a plate of food onto Cale's lap.

"And more importantly... cooking is a hobby of mine. When it comes to my mate, I don't want some stranger preparing your meals. I want to feed you myself."

Cale froze, a sudden, traitorous heat flaring back up in his cheeks.

I want to feed you myself.

The sheer, possessive devotion behind such a mundane statement hit Cale right in the chest. It was so distinctly Rok Soo—pragmatic, quiet, but utterly absolute in his care.

"You're unbelievable," Cale muttered, ducking his head to hide his face and aggressively taking a huge bite of toast to avoid making eye contact. "Making a whole Duke's residence empty just so you can play chef..."

"Eat, Cale," Rok Soo rumbled fondly, a small, satisfied smirk playing on his lips as he watched his Omega dig in. "You need your strength. We still have things to talk about."

As Cale finished the last bite of his breakfast, Rok Soo set the empty tray aside on the bedside table.

The room quieted down, the cozy morning fog giving way to the unsaid weight sitting between them.

Cale felt his stomach twist.

The quiet was becoming too suffocating, giving his overthinking brain way too much room to spiral.

He couldn't stand sitting there like a waiting target, wondering what Rok Soo was thinking.

So, true to form, Cale took control first.

He straightened his spine, wrapping Rok Soo’s oversized shirt tighter around himself, and put on his best, most composed expression—a deliberate shield against the anxiety crawling up his throat.

"Alright," Cale began, his voice surprisingly smooth, steady, and absurdly distant. "Let's discuss this properly... Duke Kim."

Rok Soo paused mid-movement, slowly turning to look at him.

His dark eyebrows pulled together slightly at the sudden, sharp formality.

He didn't interrupt, but his eyes narrowed as he listened to the defensive barrier Cale was throwing up.

"The heat was an unexpected development, but we managed it," Cale continued smoothly, waving a dismissive hand as if presenting an official report.

"You exercised restraint and didn't complete the knot, which I appreciate. It means we aren't completely bound by biology yet, and we can discuss how to proceed without making things complicated for your territory or—"

"Cale."

Rok Soo’s low, grounding voice attempted to cut through the speech, but Cale didn't even pause to take a breath.

"—and since this is your private residence in the capital, we can easily manage public perception without dragging the Henituse territory or the Northern Duchy into unnecessary rumors," Cale rushed on, his words tumbling out faster and faster as his heart hammered against his ribs.

He gestured animatedly with his free hand, his voice pitching up just a fraction. "We can establish a clear, mutually beneficial agreement regarding future heat cycles, assuming we—"

Rok Soo shifted closer on the mattress, reaching out to firmly, gently catch Cale's gesturing hand.

He wrapped his broad, warm palm over Cale's trembling fingers, pulling the smaller man's hand down between them.

"—assuming we decide to maintain a discreet arrangement—Rok Soo, listen to me!" Cale's speech finally derailed, his eyes snapping to their joined hands before shooting up to glare at Rok Soo with wide, frantic amber eyes.

Through their newborn bond, Rok Soo didn't feel a single drop of the cool, detached logic Cale was trying to project.

He felt a sharp, frantic pulse of pure anxiety, bitter and trembling under the sweet scent of wine.

"I am listening," Rok Soo rumbled softly, his thumb soothingly stroking the back of Cale's trapped hand. "Which is how I know you're rambling."

Cale’s mouth snapped shut.

His carefully constructed mask cracked instantly.

He tried to pull his hand back, but Rok Soo’s grip remained firm and warm, keeping him anchored.

"I'm not rambling," Cale muttered defensively, his gaze darting away as the composure completely bled out of his voice. "I'm being realistic."

"You're being defensive," Rok Soo corrected gently. "I now know how your mind works, Cale. You start calling me with formalities, talking at a hundred miles an hour, and ignoring me when you're trying to hide that you're terrified."

A sharp ache bloomed in Cale’s chest at being read so completely. The defensive wall he had spent the morning building crumbled to dust, leaving him raw.

"Fine," Cale whispered, his raspy voice dropping all pretense of detachment. His fingers gripped Rok Soo’s hand tight, his knuckles turning white. "Fine. I'm terrified."

"Why?" Rok Soo asked, his dark eyes softening completely as he leaned in closer. "Tell me, please."

Cale swallowed hard, his throat tight, his eyes burning as he finally stopped masking.

"Because when you pulled away last night... when you stopped yourself from completing the bond, I completely lost my mind," Cale confessed, his chest heaving with every ragged breath.

"I didn't think about 'logic' or 'practicality.' I was terrified... I was scared you realized that what everybody says about me was right. That I'm a bad Omega... that no one would ever want me as a mate, least of all someone like you."

A single tear finally escaped, tracking down his flushed cheek, but Cale couldn't stop the truth from spilling out.

"I thought... I thought you realized I wasn't good enough. I thought my scent wasn't enough for an Alpha like you. That I was too weak, too broken, too much of a burden for the Duke of the North to accept."

"Cale..." Rok Soo breathed, his heart aching at the sheer depth of Cale's quiet, hidden pain.

"I tried so hard to handle it," Cale said, his raspy voice breaking slightly.

"And when the drop hit, all I could think was that my Alpha didn't want me because I was defective. So yes, I put up a wall just now. Because I was afraid if you spoke first... you'd tell me last night was a mistake."

Rok Soo didn't wait another second.

He reached out, his broad hands framing Cale's face, wiping the tear away with his thumb as he pressed their foreheads tightly together.

"Listen to me very carefully, Cale," Rok Soo growled low, his Alpha presence flaring warm, thick, and fiercely protective, completely drowning out Cale's anxiety.

"You are not a burden. You could never be a burden to me. My Alpha didn't choose you because of biological obligation or because you were 'convenient.' I chose you because it's you. Your sharp tongue, your ridiculous selflessness, your foolish habit of trying to hide behind formal titles—I want all of it."

Rok Soo’s chest rumbled, his scent of cedar wrapping around Cale like an unbreakable shield.

He looked directly into Cale's amber eyes, his expression softening into something agonizingly fond.

"Besides... don't tell me you haven't felt it too," Rok Soo added softly, his thumb gently stroking Cale's cheek.

"From the very first moment we met... it never felt like meeting a stranger. It felt like coming back to someone I'd already known for a lifetime."

Cale’s breath hitched, the realization landing like a physical wave in his chest.

It was true.

Even before the bond, before the heat, before their scents ever collided—there had been an eerie, seamless familiarity between them.

A quiet synchronization, as if their souls had already carved out space for one another long before their paths ever crossed in this life.

"If I didn't complete the bond last night, it was to protect you from pain and give you a choice, not because you were lacking," Rok Soo murmured, pressing a firm, lingering kiss to Cale's temple. "You are everything I could ever want. Don't you ever dare think you aren't enough for me."

Cale let out a long, shuddering breath, his eyes closing as the terrifying weight of his insecurity completely vanished into Rok Soo’s absolute certainty.

He sagged forward, burying his face into the crook of Rok Soo’s neck and clinging to his shirt.

"You really are an idiot," Cale choked out, letting out a wet, breathless laugh against Rok Soo's skin. "Choosing me like that..."

"I'm always going to choose you," Rok Soo promised softly, wrapping his broad arms tight around Cale's waist and pulling his mate securely into his lap.

The bedroom fell into a deep, peaceful quiet.

The raw, jagged edges of Cale's insecurities were slowly smoothed over by the steady, overwhelming warmth of Rok Soo’s presence.

Cale remained tucked securely in Rok Soo’s lap, his forehead resting against the crook of the Alpha's neck, his fingers still clutching the fabric of Rok Soo's shirt.

The bitter, anxious spike in his scent was completely gone, replaced by the sweet, rich harmony of cedar and wine wrapped intimately together.

Rok Soo kept one broad arm firmly around Cale’s waist, his other hand lazily stroking Cale’s silky red hair, occasionally pressing quiet, reverent kisses to his temple.

"Never say those things about yourself again," Rok Soo growled low, the rumbling Alpha tone vibrating violently through Cale's chest as his grip on Cale's waist tightened to the point of bruising.

His dark eyes flashed with an intense, suffocating possessiveness.

"If anyone ever dared call you a 'bad Omega,' give me their names. I'll make sure they never speak again. You are mine, Cale. Your scent, your body, your tears—every single breath you draw belongs to me. You are the only thing I see, and I will destroy anyone who ever made you doubt that."

Cale’s breath hitched, a tiny shiver tracing down his spine at the dark, oppressive weight in Rok Soo’s voice.

His heart hammered wildly against his ribs—not out of fear, but from the raw, dangerous intensity radiating through their bond.

Instead of pulling away from the terrifying display of possessiveness, Cale let out a soft, breathless exhale, his red-tipped ears burning as he slowly leaned even deeper into Rok Soo's crushing grip.

He buried his face flush against Rok Soo's neck, inhaling the heavy, suffocating scent of cedar until his head spun.

"You're completely insane," Cale mumbled, his voice muffled against Rok Soo's skin, raspy and uneven.

He reached up, his fingers digging possessively into the back of Rok Soo’s shoulders, holding the territorial Alpha just as tightly. "Talking about destroying people so casually... as expected of a monster Duke."

Rok Soo’s chest rumbled with a quiet, dark satisfaction, his arm pressing Cale flush against his heart as he felt Cale's helpless, fluttering surrender through the bond.

"I'm only a monster for you," Rok Soo rumbled low into Cale's hair, a dark, fond curve touching his lips. "And I'm not letting anyone else ever touch what's mine. Get used to it."

Cale lifted his head slightly, meeting Rok Soo’s dark, steady gaze.

The fear, the masks, and the defensiveness were entirely gone, leaving behind a clear, quiet understanding between them.

"So," Cale said softly, his amber eyes clear. "What do we do now? We skipped... pretty much everything normal."

Rok Soo’s expression softened, his thumb coming up to stroke Cale's jawline with infinite care.

"That's exactly what we fix next," Rok Soo said, his voice dropping into a low, deliberate register.

"We went straight into a mating run, then your heat hit. Even if we both knew what we were doing, I refuse to let our story just be about surviving a heat together."

Cale blinked, tilting his head. "Fix?"

"I'm going to court you, Cale," Rok Soo stated firmly, looking directly into Cale's eyes so there was zero mistaking his intent. "Properly. The way you deserve to be sought after."

Cale’s breath hitched, a fresh wave of heat creeping up his neck. "Courting? Rok Soo, we literally just finished a mating run and mated. You washed my hair a few hours ago, and I'm drowning in your scent. It's a bit late for courting gifts and formal dates, isn't it?"

"It's never too late," Rok Soo countered easily, his dark eyes glinting with a soft, stubborn light.

"I don't care if we've already shared a bed and the bond is thrumming in our chests. I want to buy you things you like. I want to bring you tea in the afternoon. I want to take you out in the capital, hold your hand in front of everyone, and let the entire kingdom know that the Duke of the North is trying to earn your favor."

Cale stared at him, completely struck dumb by the absolute seriousness on Rok Soo’s face.

The terrifying, pragmatic Grand Duke was talking about traditional, sweet courtship like it was his most vital military directive.

"You really..." Cale mumbled, hiding his burning face back into Rok Soo’s chest, though his fingers tightened possessively over Rok Soo’s shoulders. "...you really don't do anything by halves, do you?"

"Never when it comes to you," Rok Soo rumbled, letting out a quiet chuckle as he wrapped his arms tighter around Cale, burying his face in messy red hair.

"So get ready, my Omega. I'm going to pamper you until you can't even think about running away."

"I'm not running away, you idiot," Cale huffed, pulling back just enough to look at Rok Soo.

The vulnerability in his expression melted into a sleek, bratty little smirk, his amber eyes glinting with mischievous intent.

"Besides, if the mighty Duke of the North wants to court me so badly, who am I to stop you? You'd better prepare your pockets, Rok Soo. I have extremely expensive taste."

Rok Soo let out a low, fond laugh, his chest rumbling as his arms tightened around Cale's waist. "Is that so?"

"It is," Cale sniffed, crossing his arms and lifting his chin with mock arrogance, looking completely adorable swaddled in Rok Soo's oversized clothes.

"I expect top-shelf wine, the softest silk bedding, and expensive desserts every single afternoon. If you fail to impress me even once, I'll reject your courtship."

"A tough critic," Rok Soo murmured, dark eyes crinkling with deep affection as he leaned in, pressing a firm, lingering kiss to Cale's temple. "I accept your terms, my Omega. I promise I won't disappoint you."

Cale let out a quiet hmph, though he couldn't stop the small, breathtakingly soft smile from blooming on his face as he buried his nose back into Rok Soo's neck.

"You'd better not."

Notes:

I actually crammed this for the final day of the event. I was so busy with the requirements for my internship that I had some pending work that I planned to post during the event, but oh well. Maybe I'll post it at next year's event, or some time later.

I'll be busy for the coming months. Sorry if I still haven't updated my other fics T^T
