Chapter Text

A scream echoed through the commons of the avengers tower, startling the super soldier baking in the kitchen.

Everyone on the couch meanwhile, just rolled their eyes, “That was the weakest jump scare I have ever seen!” A certain spider complained.

“The scream is half the jump scare.” Grumbled Steve from the kitchen, staring at the spilled flour caused by the unexpected loud sound.

“It's way worse of one when you're actually watching!” Peter called into the kitchen, attention soon being drawn back to the goosebumps episode Clint had insisted on watching.

Speaking of the archer, he chuckled and kicked back more than he already was. “This scared my kids so it's fair to assume you'd get scared, Spidey.”

“This scared them?!” Peter looked on with genuine shock “last episode had a weird snail looking monster! That's not scary!”

“It's scary to kids, kid.” Tony walked by, heading for the elevator, “plan to pause your show soon though, Bucky and Natasha are almost back from their scouting mission and that always means more bases to search.”

“Is that why Steve is baking cookies? So he can-” Clint spoke louder just to be obnoxious “give some to his boyfriend?”

“That doesn't work if we're actually dating, Clint” Steve rolled his eyes while in the other room, unfazed by the attempt of teasing.

Peter just gave a thumbs up to Tony as the second part of the story turned on, hoping to finish before a meeting was called.

It was right before the big twist that the meeting was called, so Peter got to the meeting room unaware of the alien twist the episode wound up having.

Sitting with the rest of the team Peter focused his attention on Bucky and Natasha who stood towards the front of the room, both looking a little less happy than when they left.

Peter considered that impressive, since there were plenty of times both of them looked far from happy.

The meeting didn't take long to begin, Peter found himself messing with the hem of his shirt, knowing whatever was found wasn't going to be particularly good.

“There are four recently abandoned Hydra bases in close proximity. None have been fully cleared.” Natasha spoke first.

Bucky continued on with the information, “knowing Hydra, those bases will either be cleared of information by Hydra agents, or blown up regardless of information.”

“Meaning we have to get in there before they can.” Natasha finished.

Tony narrowed his eyes, “so we either have to work fast, or” he paused, “split up the team to explore all at once.”

“Splitting up would make sure all information is gathered in time.” Steve nodded, a quick glance at Tony before looking back at Natasha and Bucky to see how they would respond.

Natasha nodded, “Four small teams to clear the bases.”

“Me with Clint,” Bucky started with the teams, leaving no room to argue the idea “Natasha with Bruce, Steve with Peter, Tony with Sam.”

“Why wouldn't I be teamed up with Peter” Tony sent a glare towards Bucky, getting an annoyed look in response.

Steve answered for Bucky, “I know a lot about Hydra bases and would be most equipped to help the kid.”

“And the teams are paired for at least one person to be highly knowledgeable about hydra bases.” Natasha added on, her tone carried something of annoyance at Tony's lack of understanding.

“I've raided enough Hydra bases to be familiar with them too, Stripes.” Tony mumbled, ignoring the real reason and looking half ready to stand from his seat in challenge.

Peter decided that attempting to calm the situation would be smart. “Why'd they abandon all those bases anyways?”

“The jet was likely spotted by a soldier hidden in the snow since the agents were leaving as we arrived.” Natasha spoke loud enough to draw attention back to her, “meaning the quicker we get there, the less likely they'll blow up the bases before we can.”

“That means everybody get to the jet with your suits” Bruce stood and brushed by Tony with an urging look. The argument was successfully stopped.

Peter jumped up, “I'll make sure to pack extra web fluid!” He did finger guns to Tony before leaving the room, glad to see Steve leave the room soon after, meaning the chance of an argument sparking again was completely gone.

The packing for the trip was to be a quick effort, since they were planning on an in and out mission.

The flight would be the most boring part, in Peter's opinion, but he planned to finish the goosebumps episode on his phone so the show would likely provide some entertainment.

Grabbing his backpack, with his suit in it, he pushed some web fluid capsules from his desk into it and quickly zipped it up.

Getting down the hallway with one quick stop in the bathroom to get changed into his suit, Peter continued onward.

Going through the commons towards the elevator, he made a quick detour through the kitchen to snatch a few cookies for the way up to the jet.

Once he left the elevator, he took quick notice of a jumping spider building a web in a corner before he got into the jet.

Peter found himself settled on the roof of the jet, sitting criss cross whilst watching the kids horror show.

Over the course of the flight, Peter found himself more and more invested in different episodes of goosebumps, sad when the jet landed and his watching spree had to end.

Peter mostly ignored all the instructions given to the rest of the groups, only focusing when Natasha walked up to him and Steve, “Steve, you and Peter will be heading southeast, the base you two will be at should be the second smallest. Two floors, both should be more similar to offices and labs than other bases. The main computer is likely located in the center of the bottom floor.” With that, Natasha held out three pieces of paper, likely a rough map and any excess information.

Steve nodded, taking the paper and glancing towards Peter until he nodded back, the two of them heading out into the snow.

In the back of his mind, Peter felt a little annoyed that he wouldn't get to go anywhere bigger than a warehouse, however he cast that thought aside when a snowflake hit his lenses.

It was times like this that Peter was glad to have heaters built into his suit, knowing the fabric alone wouldn't help much against the weather, nor would his backpack help with temperatures.

Steve glanced over the paper, “The worst we need to be wary of is the doors, if one of them has a mechanical lock of any kind, a wrong attempt could cause a full on explosion.”

“That's when we use our strength” Peter had heard most of it before, knowing that if he could keep the lock from being triggered in any way, he'd be able to brute force through the doors.

A quick nod from Steve was all that Peter needed, getting passed the paper, a quick skim through confirmed that it would be a safe trip.

He kept the papers nonetheless and stored them in his backpack, something he had brought in case anything needed to be taken from the base and brought to the jet.

Trudging through the snow made Peter wish the ability to use webs was an option, disliking the high snow layers which were keeping him from walking normally.

Eventually, Peter saw the large door into the base and he breathed a sigh of relief, “how does Hydra stay here if their blood is as cold as their hearts! So much snow…”

“Their hate gives them warmth” Steve huffed a laugh, moving up to the door and testing if it was openable, seeming glad when it opened with no issues.

Peter and Steve moved forward, and as they did, he thanked the spider that gave him powers for the night vision, as the whole place was bathed in shadows.

The only thing that seemed to catch the outside light was the web of a spindly spider, hanging in the middle of the room.

Despite the arachnid, which Peter waved to, the two of them moved into the base, Steve's flashlight clicking on with an echoing sound.

He hoped they weren't walking into something they shouldn't.

Notes:

This chapter didn't have much of the horror, but be prepared because the next will start creeping into the horror and it will only get more intense from there!
