"hm.... " Jake simply just made that soft hum as he sat up and rubbed his eyes after waking up. He blinked a few times and looked beside him and smiled. Tom was still fast asleep. His scarred face looking peaceful for once as he did so. He was also drooling a bit. That made Jake chuckle a little as he slowly got out of bed. His husband was always like this. And he loved it a lot. Tom was perfect to him, no matter what happened between them. He was definitely better that his ex after all.
Jake walked to the kitchen now and was humming to himself as he thought for a moment. He wanted to make something for Tom since Tom had always helped him with everything lately. Even making his nights better just by existing.
"If I use the honey-glaze, he’ll definitely wake up the second the smell hits the hallway," Jake whispered to the empty room, his mind already cataloging the contents of the pantry. He stepped softly across the hardwood, mindful of the one loose floorboard that acted like a tripwire for Tom’s light sleeper instincts. The kitchen was dim, bathed in the blue-grey light of early morning, but Jake didn't need the overheads to find the cast iron skillet.
He considered a savory Dutch baby, perhaps with a side of those thick-cut smoked sausages Tom loved. Or maybe he should go the route of the overly indulgent. He could almost see Tom’s expression, that slow, sleepy grin that reached his eyes, the way he’d lean into Jake’s side and mutter something incoherent about how he didn't deserve this much effort.
The decision came not from the pantry list, but from a sudden, vivid memory of a tiny bakery they had stumbled upon during a rainy trip to the coast three years ago. They had shared a single, oversized blueberry donut, the glaze still warm and the berries bursting with a tartness that cut through the sugar. Tom had mentioned that that was his favorite. Jake grinned now and decided.
He would be making blueberry donuts. Which he started right away. He hummed as he mixed the bowl and kept glancing at the time. He was glad making donuts for just his husband was much more simple than making many for multiple people like he had to do at his own bakery. He smiled at the thought of it and was glad he and Miriam could start it. He wondered how she was doing as he put the batter into the donut shapes and put them in the oven to bake.
A while later, Tom had gotten up and sleepily walked to the kitchen. He was rubbing his eyes as Gabs, their pet cat, brushed around his ankles. The moment he smelled the donuts, fresh out of the oven, he gasped and went straight to Jake in the kitchen. Jake grinned at him as he held the tray. Tom looked like a giant happy dog. He hugged Jake and kissed his cheek before snatching a donut and practically devouring it.
"Thanks Jake!" He said to the blue haired man that was his husband. "This is why you're the best man ever! I'm so glad you're my boyfriend!" Jake chuckled softly and raised his eyebrow at Tom. "I'm your husband, Tom." He reminded him. Tom beamed brightly at that, "oh right! Even better!" With a laugh, Jake hugged him tight and ate a donut with his husband happily.
