Work Text:
One morning it occurs to you, has your Poipole always been so… shiny? Bright like the sun that shines over Ultra Megalopolis. The same color as His shimmering scales–
Yes, of course. What a silly question. He was the one who gifted you Poipole in the first place. A companion so you won't get so lonely while He is away on “godly business”.
And it does get so, so lonely at the top of Megalo Tower.
You carry Poipole in your arms as you drift to the window seat to watch the rising sun, stroking their carapace as the first light touches the two of you.
Sometimes all three of you watch the sunrise together. More often than not He's gone when you wake up. There's always so much work to do, so many people to grant happiness. Even if you are His most brilliant star it'd be unfair to deny others His radiance.
When the three of you watch the sunrise He hand feeds you breakfast. You chase His syrup covered fingers on your tongue. Sometimes He fondly chides you. My love, not in front of your dear Poipole. Beloved, the day has only just started. Other times He allows you to indulge.
You think he enjoys it when the two of you indulge. He was created perfect and shining to serve. The happiness of others is His own, but you are his most brilliant of stars. Surely that counts for something more. (A 5 star pull first thing that morning. Your hands shook with excitement all the way to work.)
Eventually Poipole tugs at you to leave the window seat for breakfast at the table.
A feast laid out for you made of exotic “plants” the people now harvest in the city below. No need for piles of coral sweetened D△ritos when the bounty of worlds may be brought to you. He likes to watch you try new berries and vegetables, and always laughs so brightly at your reactions. You only try new foods during dinner these days, after He comes home for dusk.
Fragrant and ripe berries sliced over your pancakes. The perfect amount of salt in your coffee. (Who the hell keeps switching out my sugar with salt!?) Silverware shining as though brand new. You and Poipole eat in silence.
You hand wash the dishes with Poipole after eating. You don't need to do anything, nothing besides look beautiful for Him, but you become restless without action. Tidying your already spotless living space, trying to count all of the people on the streets below, replaying every game on your StayPlay. Little things while you wait for Him to return.
Poipole gets restless as well, but you're less sure what to do about that. They like to twirl in place. (I'll buy you D△ritos if you help me clean up all the paint before Miss Ella notices!) You'd chase each other around the room if not for the mess it makes.
Warm donuts, one of your snacks of choice, are delivered when the mood strikes. To this day you don't know why, but once you hid one under the bed until it turned bland and stale. Tears welled up at the first crumbly mouthful for no reason.
(–hunched over the Casino counter. You'll have to make a detour to the Apothecary if you want to keep rolling for dark types. You rifle through your pockets on the way out deciding what to trade, and the clown girl gives you a wink for good luck on the way out. You'll get a perfect fox pokeman for her to transform soon enough, and then everyone in the recon squad will be so jealous–)
He’s done very well to make sure you only eat fresh treats since then. He can't stand to see His most brilliant star distraught over something so easy to fix. And besides, My star, my love, how could you do something so silly? There’s no need to hide food away for later. If you want something simply ask, and I will grant your wish.
The top floor of Megalo Tower holds a view of the entire city in all its radiant glory. Sunlight refracting upon itself and itself and itself across the towering glass skyscrapers of Ultra Megalopolis. Once upon a time the people of this world condensed into the overflowing city seeking the safety of its false light. Now they live here because where else would anyone want to be? The towers grow taller, more tightly packed, and the light bounces between like millions of tiny stars.
Having a full view of the entire city’s light hurts your eyes, but there are no curtains in your tower to dim them. The dark is worse. It’s a difficult choice, but He would rather you hurt than suffer the horrible terrors you have without His light.
(You can't be sure, but cleaning always seems to involve less explosions the day after you've had another nightmare.)
You agree with His decision. If it protects you from the creeping all consuming [shade] of the dark you will endure any pain necessary. Anything could be hiding in the gaping void, even the smallest pockets of it are enough to hold dangerous thoughts.
The setting sun scatters twinkling orange across Poipole’s carapace. It reminds you of how the light looked so different in other worlds. Jungles and ruins, oceans and deserts. (I know you can handle it. Stay safe out there, kiddo.) Horrible places full of strange creatures beyond His light.
You only need to wait a little longer. Soon He will be back to comfort you through the night.
