Work Text:
I’ve never been one to feel. It’s not like I didn’t want to, I just couldn’t, not on my own anyway. I don’t know what it was about you, but when we met, for the first time since I could remember, I felt an emotion that didn’t come from my vials.
A fluttering in the spot where my soul should have been, so of course, I had to find out more.
I started paying closer attention during battles, my past self would be so confused.
I noticed all the little details. How you never destroyed any OuterTale copies, how you would gently wrap Nightmare’s henchmen in your strings and pull them out of danger. How you faintly smelled of chocolate. All of it, hidden behind a mask of black and red anger and glitched code.
Even through the pain and destruction you caused, I found it difficult to drink my red vial and fight for the safety of the AU’s. To fight you.
I still remember when you broke my arm the first time I entered your anti-void. I hadn’t taken any blue that day, yet I cried. Maybe it was because I still hadn’t gotten used to such pain, or because I thought that we could be friends.
That was the first time I’d cried on my own, the second was yesterday morning.
I can still recall your cold hand in mine, not a single glitch reacting to my touch. I could still tell you word for word what was on the note you left behind, but not a single syllable that came out of Dream’s mouth. I still taste the bitterness of my own tears in my mouth as I realized you were finally gone.
I had won our “war,” but at what cost? The one person I could feel for and was always happy to see, even if none of the gentleness you held was for me.
I can’t I don’t think I’ll be ready for the day of your burial. The others are all fine with it and I don’t know why. Not even Dream saw any good in you, I had to arrange this whole thing myself! I would invite Nightmare’s gang, but I have no idea if they’d attack me. Remind me to leave them an anonymous tip later, okay? I’ll miss you.
