Chapter Text
It had been about two weeks since the night that Steve and Tony had their little come-to-jesus moment in the gym of the Avengers tower. Since then it seemed like the missions were non-stop and Steve’s exhaustion was at a level just under going back in the ice for 70 years. The whole team had been working tirelessly but Tony hadn’t let that stop him from making good on his promise to Steve. I hope you’re happy with the monster you created, Tony’s words echoed in his mind. He was happy but also extremely frustrated.
Unlike Tony had said before, he did not start the very next day. The morning after, Tony woke up in his bed with Steve by his side, Steve must have carried him there. It left a giddy spirit in the air between them for a good few days to the point that the team had started to notice they were getting along a lot better, suspiciously better.
“Well if they’re not fighting anymore they must’ve started fucking,” Clint joked quietly to Natasha on the couch but not quietly enough for Tony and Steve not to catch it. Tony looked towards Cap from across the room with a devious glint in his eye like he had finally remembered what he had said that night. Steve raised a curious eyebrow back to him wondering what his partner might be scheming this time.
“Sorry to interrupt Sir, Director Fury is on the line, you are all needed for an emergency briefing in the meeting room,” Jarvis announced and the smirk on Tony’s face only grew wider with glee. This confused Steve, why would Tony of all people be happy about a briefing? Especially because a briefing usually meant a mission which he only assumed would get in the way of whatever Tony had been planning. Steve furrowed his brows in confusion at his excited expression and the other Avengers picked up on it too.
“Do you actually look excited for a meeting Tony? You’re not having a stroke are ya,” Bruce looked at him quizzically like a doctor inspecting a psych patient gone wrong.
“No it’s nothing I’ve just been getting a little antsy sitting around here ya know it’ll be nice to get out, have some fun.” His dark brown eyes found Steve for just long enough to let him know that last message was for him. Steve didn’t fully understand it then…he did now. It had been almost a week and a half since that moment and Tony hadn’t given the Captain a moment to breathe since. It started off as slow, little things that Steve could almost brush off had he not seen the look on the young genius’s face before it started. Things like Tony’s hand brushing against his crotch as they all crammed into the elevator, his fingers trailing circles on Steve’s thigh under the table, dropping things purposefully to bend over in front of him, and of course he had started talking back again during Steve’s presentations to the team.
“Hey spangles, we get it, we go in, kick bad guy ass, come home, fuck bitches get money, can we wrap it up and save it for another day cause some of us have better places to be,” Tony snarked from across the room as Steve was stood before the team going over their next mission. His feet were propped up on the table in the usual way, he was lounging back in his chair with his shades still over his eyes but lowered just enough for Steve to see the mirth behind them. His usual self-assured smirk plastered across his face.
He was having too much fun already and Steve could feel the knot in his stomach tightening. Steve wasn’t stupid, he understood now why Tony had been so excited, he was testing the Captains restraint for his own amusement while back to back missions kept them too busy for Steve to retaliate properly. However, Steve didn’t want the cocky genius to forget that he had made a promise of his own that night and the missions wouldn’t last forever.
Steve chewed the inside of his cheek to hide his half smirk before responding, “I did promise to save something for another day didn’t I Tony?” The statement itself was innocent, the rest of the team just looked at each other slightly confused before assuming the two of them must just be back to their usual selves. Tony, however, knew exactly what the good captain meant by that as he thought back to the sight of Steve’s belt on the table, the feeling of the cool leather against his exposed skin. Tony swallowed hard, his ears tinged pink and his pants tightened but he played it cool in front of the group.
The only one who seemed to pick up the odd vibes between them was Bruce who was once again looking quizzically between the two of them. Tony said nothing back this time, he just sat there looking smug despite his ears still burning red.
Steve thought this interaction meant he had won at least a smidge of whatever Tony had started. Little did he know he had just been fanning the flames. Tony only continued to get worse, he started teasing Steve on missions, even going as far as hacking his earpiece so that he could whisper dirty things in his ear that only he could hear but if Steve responded the whole team would hear him like normal.
“You know I was totally lying when I said that suit did nothing for your ass, I’d love to leave my teeth marks on it.”
“It’s really too bad that you’re such a goody-goody Cap cause I could totally have Jarvis fly this suit around without me and you could meet round the back of this building and get America’s dick sucked on foreign soil.”
Steve even responded by throwing his shield at Tony once during a mission. He wasn’t really aiming for him but it was close enough to be a clear warning. “Oop, Daddy’s angry,” Tony chirped in mock fear. Steve clinched his fists and bit down on his cheek. The bratty billionaire couldn’t have been more excited, he loved knowing all of his hijinks were working spectacularly.
Tony was driving Steve up a wall and it was making him more antsy and frustrated by the day. He needed to up his game if he was going to survive this. Eventually, Steve laid in wait and caught his tormentor in the hallway for a moment between briefings when no one was around. He quickly grabbed the brunette by the throat and slammed him back against the wall behind them.
To Tony’s credit he didn’t miss a beat once again, a part of him had to be expecting some retaliation after all. “Well hello to you too Captain,” He smirked despite his position.
“You are gonna pay for this, dearly, little one,” Steve growled quietly through gritted teeth.
Tony scoffed with a face of mock offense,”I’m sure I have no idea what you mean by that good sir.”
They both heard the distinct sound of footsteps headed their way, forcing Steve to release Tony from his grip and back up. Tony smirked and adjusted his tie as two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents walked by, files in hand, towards the meeting room. “Welp, looks like we got another mission Cap better suit up,” Tony smirked once again, flipping his collar up to hide the marks forming on his throat and giving Steve a wink before sauntering off. Fuck… Steve was going to be thinking about those the rest of the day.
It had gotten so bad Steve couldn’t sleep, for even the few hours he actually had the time. He tried going back to the gym but looking at that table brought the whole night flooding back. That led to its own set of problems that Steve unfortunately had to deal with on his own. So, Steve decided if he couldn’t sleep and he couldn’t act, he could at least do some scheming of his own.
