Work Text:
When Phoenix lost his badge, there were a few things on his mind. His first obvious one was how to take care of a child. That lead into him being jobless and needing to afford food and their utilities and rent and clothes for her and so many other things. Worries about what she liked and ate and could do on her own and what she needed help with. The concern about gossip reporters and if her father would be found and declared guilty on the spot. Not to mention the reason behind his disbarment, because surely someone didn’t spend money on a forgery if they didn’t have a reason for it.
Everything built up, with Phoenix just fighting to put fires out as new ones sprang up. Just as he thought he had everything under control a new problem presented itself: his heat. He usually didn’t mind his designation. There were stereotypes sure but that came with all designations. He had to deal with being overly horny once or twice a year, sometimes got unwanted comments from dumb alphas who thought he was easy, and deal — dealt — with clients’ initial worry about if Phoenix could hold his own in court.
Yet Phoenix was used to it. Most of it. Usually he would take medication to keep his heats away, or at least calm them a whole lot. It helped to allow him to accept last minute cases and to continue on with his life quicker. Sure there were some side effects, his smell got a bit sensitive after his rushed heats and he could get random heat flashes, but nothing that stopped him. Until now.
With the lost of his badge and everything that followed after, Phoenix realized something just on the cusp of too late: he was entering his heat. Perhaps it was from the pheromones of the little child now in his home, perhaps it was because he had skipped one too many doses of his medication. Whatever the case he was entering preheat, and his true heat would follow shortly after.
Scrambling he got things set. Maya agreed to take Trucy for the next two weeks, with Phoenix promising to come and get her earlier once his heat fully burned off. He got his grocery shopping done, called off work at the Borscht Bowl Club, and was prepared to lock himself in his apartment and push through his heat by himself. Well, until someone tried getting involve.
On his last night at his job before he’d be retiring to solitude, Kristoph Gavin decided to pay him a visit. An offer to buy dinner and talk. Phoenix didn’t know how to feel about the alpha. He seemed calm and collected, polite despite the legal world half turning on him, yet something in his instincts told him not to rest fully around the man. His biggest warning came towards the end of the attorney’s visit.
Just as he was saying his goodbyes he paused. Glancing around the taller man leaned down to speak directly into his ear.
“I can smell it, you know. You’re entering your heat soon.”
Flustered Phoenix tried to explain.
“W-Well with Trucy and—”
“Hm. Well if you need assistance of any kind, please reach out. It’s the least I could do for you after everything my brother did.”
Phoenix was stunned silent, staring ahead at where the man was sitting as he walked out of the building. The rest of the evening was spoiled for him. The offer felt like a warning. A clear display of the power Kristoph thought he held over him. Phoenix didn’t know if he was responsible for anything or not. All he knew was that the defense attorney should not be trusted. No matter what happens he would never rely on the man for anything.
Not bothering give a deny text Phoenix got through the rest of his preheat before locking himself in for the next week.
A few hours into his heat his resolve was quickly dying. Despite falling off a burning bridge he felt like he was on fire, burning from the inside out. His heat had never been this bad before. Even his first ever one where he wasn’t prepared for what he’d feel was far easier than this now. After failing to find any relief from the toys he had or to cool his skin off with freezing water in the shower, the ex-attorney decided to accept defeat. Anything. He’d do anything to cool this fire. Reaching for his phone he had stashed on his nightstand he sent his answer.
I accept your offer. pleas e help
As another heat wave flashed through his body Phoenix whined, fruitlessly reaching for another toy. After what seemed like hours he heard the door open. In his lust filled brain he didn’t even worry about how Kristoph got in since he had locked the door. He was just happy to get any kind of relief.
A voice called to him, but Phoenix felt equal parts wanting and worried. That didn’t sound like the attorney. But who else could it be? Maya knew not to bother him, and no one else he knew would enter his apartment without permission. Right? Yet there was something familiar about the voice, making him want to reach out. The reason became obvious as the bedroom door creaked opened.
“Wright, I got your text. What—”
Frozen. For one singular moment Phoenix stopped moving. Glancing over he saw Miles Edgeworth standing there, gray eyes wide as he took in the sight Phoenix was. The dildo he was currently trying to find relief with was sunk in halfway, shown off by how the ex-attorney was on his hands and knees. The room stank of sex and pheromones, other toys covered with lube scattered around him.
This was the worst case scenario. Why did Edgeworth have to come? Phoenix never wanted the man to see him like this, debased and hungry for anything. But just as quickly as his brain temporarily forgot about his heat it came back in full force, only ramping up as he got a whiff of the man’s scent. Phoenix had always enjoyed the prosecutor’s scent, helping to soothe him especially when he released protective pheromones in times of distress. Right now there was an undertone of hunger and desire, a clear effect from Phoenix’s own appearance and scent.
“E-Edgeworth.” As much as he wished he could have kept any dignity he had with the man, just him seeing him like this was the final push to make any lingering respect Miles might have held even after Phoenix got disbarred vanish. Right now all he could focus on was that it hurts and there’s an alpha who could help him. With his back pressed there was only one choice: bet all chips on red. “Edgeworth please. I’m sorry but please. I need you. It hurts.”
The man was clearly hesitant. If he left… well if he left then Phoenix would call Kristoph. He couldn’t stand it. Tears sprung in his eyes at the thought. That must have been the deciding factor for Edgeworth as he slowly stepped closer.
“I don’t like this. I… I shouldn’t touch you like this. Not when you’re not yourself.” As more tears sprung in his eyes and he cried in despair, hands reached down to soothe him. Instantly the touch dosed some of the heat, if ever so minutely. “But I’ll do it. Please, I hope you remember this. I don’t want you to hurt. I wouldn’t do this to you without your full permission if it wasn’t the only thing stopping you from hurting.”
While Phoenix didn’t get most of what the man was saying, he felt the heat stop rising. It still burned bright but he felt more stable. Safe. He could trust Edgeworth to make him feel good. To soothe his burns. He moved the dildo out of him, pushing his ass up. Presenting himself. As those hands left him he whined, twisting to see what the man was doing. He was walking out of the room. He was leaving!
“Please!”
“It’s okay. I promise. I’m just going to grab you a glass of water okay? I won’t leave you.”
A scent wafted over, soothing him. The promise in his words made Phoenix slump down onto the covers, knees still tucked under him. Before he could blink again Miles appeared, placing two cups of water on the nightstand. His shoes were gone, his shirt unbuttoned. He took it off before folding it and placing it on the dresser.
“The doors are locked. I didn’t see any food for afterwards but I can always order take out for you later. Am I forgetting anything?”
Edgeworth was muttering to himself but Phoenix could hear his words. Still, it didn’t matter to him. All he cared about was how the prosecutor was undoing his belt and dropping his pants. The omega felt his mouth water. He wanted the man. He wanted his cock, his knot. He needed it.
A reedy whine filled the air, calling all attention to him.
“Wright. Wright, it’s okay. I’m here. I know it hurts I—”
“Miles. Miles please.”
The man stuttered slightly, feet almost tripping over himself. He hovered over Phoenix, naked and with wide eyes of his own. It seemed like he might have triggered the alpha in him. From how Miles was twitching to dive forward it was clear he was fighting it.
“C-Condom. Wright, Phoenix where—”
Phoenix quickly gestured to his nightstand. While he hadn’t had sex with a partner in a while, he still used condoms. He had hoped the feeling of it might trick his heat-brain into thinking he had another person with him but that didn’t work. Rushing over Miles went and grabbed the condoms, placing one within reach on the nightstand and tearing one open for himself now.
He caged him against the bed, voice growling as he asked, “Are you stretched enough, or do you need more prep?”
“I’m good. Please Miles it hurts.”
“I know. I’ll help you I promise.”
Before he could blink Phoenix was flipped on his back. The toys around him were pushed out of the way. Phoenix didn’t care where they ended up. All he could focus on was the alpha hovering above him, pupils blown wide and smile turning a bit vicious. Arms went under his knees, guiding him. Phoenix quickly got the picture, wrapping around Miles’ hips and angling up as much as he could.
It felt like time slowed down. Miles lightly petted his thigh with one hand as he lined himself up using the other. His cock teasing his rim as Phoenix whimpered and begged for him to hurry up. The next thing the omega knew Miles’ hips were flush with his ass, Phoenix skewed fully on his cock.
A needy keen rang in the air, Phoenix squeezing his legs around the alpha when he left him try to retreat.
“P-Phoenix. I need to move. I can make you feel good but you need to let me move.”
Logically Phoenix knew this. If he held on too tight then he would only be filled and nothing else. Still, his heat brain was the one at play. If he let go then Miles could leave. He could leave and never come back. Phoenix shook his head, begging nonsensically as he rolled his hips. The alpha tried assuring him and getting him to loosen his grip once more but stopped.
Leaning over him Miles kissed him, hard and deep. Phoenix happily accepted it, reluctant to pull back as his breath ran out.
“Phoenix,” he growled, and said man tingled at the tone. It wasn’t just because of how deep it was. There was a touch of his alpha voice coming through. “You need to loosen up so I can fuck you like you need.”
While Phoenix had gotten very used to ignoring the biological part of him that told him to listen when alphas used that tone, this was Miles. The man who helped him in his youth and that he was best friends with for one wonderful year. Who left suddenly but always stayed in Phoenix’s mind. The man who he wanted to help and shifted his major for. The person Phoenix loved and adored but couldn’t dare confess for fear of losing him once more. Phoenix listened. His legs stayed wrapped around the man but unlocked, allowing Miles to move. And move he did.
“Fuck!”
Phoenix threw his head back, hands struggling to find something to grip so he could stay put for each relentless thrust. Miles, after pounding into him for the first minute or so slowed down.
“Hands on my shoulder,” he purred — honest to God purred — as he leaned back down to nuzzle his neck.
Phoenix did as told, moaning as Miles picked up again. It was perfect, letting him have another point of connection with him while ensuring he would feel every movement. Time seemed to shift, slowing down and speeding up at random. Miles’ pace never changed. His hips thrusted into him hard and deep, changing angles slightly until Phoenix was screaming for it.
His finger dug into the man’s shoulders, trying to bring him closer. It wasn’t enough. It wasn’t enough and it was too much. He needed more. He needed a break. He needed—
“Please,” he mumbled, fighting to keep his eyes open. “Please I want- I need—”
“I know. I’m going to help you feel better. Hold on.”
They shifted and Phoenix whined, head lolling back as he somehow added just a touch more pressure on that spot inside him. Within seconds he was coming, painting the space between them. Clenching down on Miles’ cock seemed to have a greater effect on the alpha than he’d expect, because moments later Miles swore and clutched him closer.
That’s when Phoenix felt it. His knot.
His ears were ringing. It had been a while since he had sex, and never before did he share his heat with someone. His body was fighting with his mind, wanting more yet logically knowing that it should hurt and he should pull back. Miles was trying to talk with him, words being pressed into his skin as he laid kisses over his face. As the knot fully inflated and he got used to the pressure hearing slowly came back to him.
“—good. You’re taking it so good, Phoenix. I hope you feel better. I love you so much.”
At that he whined, turning his head to meet his lips. It was more of a brush — Phoenix didn’t have the coordination at this time to do much more than that — but he hoped Miles knew what it meant. Suddenly the prosecutor turned limpless above him, holding him close as he laid on top of him. Slowly he shifted them so they were both on their side.
Hands trailed up over his face, brushing his sweat damp hair back.
“We’ll need to talk more after this. For now though just relax until it goes down. Afterwards we can get some food and shower.”
Phoenix liked the sound of that. Well, most of it. He wasn’t so keen on talking about anything right now. Lolling his head forward to rest on the man’s shoulder Miles laughed before relaxing. Well, until he inhaled.
“…Phoenix. Phoenix you’re still—”
The slightly panicked tone and his tensing stopped almost instantly once Phoenix tried cowering back in fear of upsetting him.
“Right. I figured it’d be like my ruts but… okay, well we should hopefully have some time to get food in you. You’ll need the extra energy.”
The omega didn’t know what he was talking about. All he cared about was the Miles was keeping his arms wrapped around him, soothing purrs filling the space around them. From him or Miles he didn’t quite know. Perhaps it was from both of them. That slowly went to the background as Miles’ knot went down. For the first time in hours it felt like he could breath. With that came the growing realization of what he just did.
“Miles. Edgeworth, I…”
“You’re coming back to yourself? Good.” Miles pulled away enough so he could look at him directly. “Phoenix, before your heat swings back up I need to know: are you okay with this?”
“H-Huh?”
“With me still helping you finish your heat. I don’t know if you remember what happened before… before I did this with you, but—”
“You said you wouldn’t do it without permission.” The words came back to him in a haze. “Something about me not thinking right?”
Hands trailed up his side and back, keeping him soothed for Phoenix to relax back into his hold.
“I- You’re someone very important to me. I didn’t want to do anything with you unless I knew it was fully your own thoughts. But you were in pain and were asking so I—”
“Hey. Hey,” Phoenix sniffed again, catching that fear and uncertainty ever so clearly in his scent. “I asked. Trust me, if I ever had the courage to ask anyone outright… well, it would probably been you.”
Phoenix wanted to say more. Say every single thought he had about the man. Yet now wasn’t the time. Still though, with the growing connection they had through his shared heat plus how they’ve known each other enough to have a good sense of each other’s scents and changes in their moods, Miles knew something at least.
Gray eyes stared at his mismatched ones, searching. Once he found whatever it was he needed to see he smiled. Rubbing his face against his cheek Miles relaxed against him. Slowly he did pull back, separating them from below but keeping his hands on him.
“Let’s talk more afterwards. For now I’m going to order some food and get us cleaned off. Hopefully you also have some time to sleep before the next wave hits.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They didn’t end up talking until five days later. During the periods of time when his heat quelled enough to stop needing a knot or stimulation, other things took priority. It was a mixture of showering and eating and sleeping. Along with more reassurances for Miles that the ex-attorney was still okay with him continuing to share his heat, the question soft and full of caring. That concern only made Phoenix more happy for his mistake. Assuring the prosecutor that he trusted him and would be fine with continuing if the man was.
Once Phoenix got the remainder of his heat fucked out of him he relaxed in the man’s hold. They’d need to shower and probably eat again, but Phoenix was loathing having to separate and face the music out of his heat brain. So he ended up falling asleep while Miles’ knot was slowly coming down.
The next time Phoenix blinked awake he realized that he must have been moved at some point. Despite being in his bed now the sheets were clean, fresh, and sadly not smelling like Miles. A whine came out at that, especially as he saw no sign of the man. Tears slowly leaked out, Phoenix turning to burying his face in his pillow.
He should have expected it. He should have prepared himself for this. Of course the man wouldn’t want anything more to do with him once he finished helping Phoenix out with this. He was disgusting, begging for his friend to fuck him while in his heat. Not to mention how Phoenix was sure the man resented him for presenting forged evidence, even if he had claimed otherwise.
He was drowning in his emotions, the remaining onslaught from the week spent in his heat crashing down on him, that it took hands pulling his face away from the pillow to notice he wasn’t alone.
“Oh Phoenix. Does it still hurt? Here, let me—” The man sniffed, taking a second before his eyes widened. “Wait…grief? Phoenix what’s wrong?”
“You… Y-You didn’t leave?”
“No. Phoenix no, I was grabbing our food. I wouldn’t leave you.”
He sniffled, trying to resist but being unable to stop himself from curling into the man. The arms wrapped around him helped to calm him down enough to speak.
“But you changed the sheets and were gone. I thought you were disgusted by me.”
“Disgusted? The only thing that bothered me was sleeping in dirty sheets once your heat calmed down. I moved you to the couch so I could change the bed for us. That’s all. Why, did you want to sleep on them?”
He curled into himself. Well, tried to. The arms around him prevented him from pulling away. Mumbling against the man’s chest Miles hummed, inquiring about what he said. Swallowing his pride he pulled his face away from the man’s chest enough to be heard.
“It doesn’t have your scent.”
“Oh darling. It’s okay. We can scent these sheets. Do you want to do that before you eat?”
Nodding he leaned back in. Miles kissed his head, moving them to both lay on the bed. Almost immediately his scent leaked out, calming Phoenix’s fears and having his own scent leak out and mix together. Hands moved over him, soothing him even further and causing him to turn limp. He was content. If he never moved from this spot again he’d die a happy man. Unfortunately with his heat gone Miles wasn’t going to delay their talk any longer.
“Phoenix. I want you to know I’ll do a lot for you. I want the best for you. I know… I know you’re in a difficult time right now. Your disbarment and taking care of Trucy. Plus I still need to be in Germany more times than not. But still… If you only want me to help you out sometimes with this,” he waved his hand before placing it back on his side, pulling him closer. “I am okay with that.”
“And if I wanted more?”
“In what sense? I… I love you, Phoenix. I’ll give you anything you ask for.”
His first instinct was to ask to bond. All it’d take was one little bite. It would be stronger out the gate considering that they just shared his heat together. But…
“I want to try dating. Miles, I’ve been in love with you for so long. If you’re really serious about this—”
“I am.”
“Then please. I want to try this. Try us.”
Silver eyes widened, and for a moment Phoenix feared he would be rejected. That despite Miles just moments before confessing his love that they were moving too fast too soon. Yet when a chuckle leaked out and turned into him pressing kisses into his skin, Phoenix’s fears were doused instantly.
“I’d love that.”
The two stayed embraced for a few moments longer, the weight of it all sinking in. Until Phoenix’s stomach growled. Reluctantly he pulled away, embarrassed.
“Sorry. I don’t know why I’m hungry. Especially since we ate…” He trailed off, unsure how long ago they last ate.
“Your body needed the energy. Here, I ordered something simple so you can stay in bed.”
Phoenix smiled at his partner, sitting up and accepting the takeout container. Sandwiches. Not bad. Something they didn’t need to sit at the table for, which was good considering how Phoenix was feeling sore and would still be chilling in bed for another day or two. As he took a bite and swallowed he couldn’t help but bring something up.
“I don’t get why it was so bad. I’ve had heats before. I went through all this. Even if it’s been awhile, it shouldn’t have felt that bad.”
“I looked it up, while you were sleeping earlier. The first time that is.” Miles scooched closer, hand clasped lightly on his knee. “It’s from stress. An omega’s emotions during heat are already all over the place. You become vulnerable. With the stress from the trial and from taking care of Trucy your emotions were at an all time high. Kicking into an unexpected heat was too much. But that also brings me into the question of why did you text me? I knew you might be experiencing something since Maya told me about you dropping Trucy off but…”
Right. He almost forgot about that. Suddenly he didn’t have an appetite. Moving the food on the nightstand he curled his feet under himself.
“It was meant for Kristoph. He- He smelled my preheat and offered to help me. I didn’t want to say yes but it was so bad I felt like I was dying. I’m so glad it got sent to you instead but…”
The possibility lingered in the air. If the message got received by the intended party then this happy little moment would never happen. Miles was quiet. Phoenix smelt it. The mixture of emotions. Turning to look at him he gasped as hands reached out, pulling Phoenix close. No, pulling him flush and grabbing his black locks so Miles had access to his neck.
“M-Miles? Miles please—”
“You know what he’s going to try and do, don’t you?” His words were spoken in a growl, grip tightening. “I don’t want to give him a chance.”
Despite the strong tone Miles didn’t bite down. That’s when Phoenix noticed him trembling. He was holding himself back. Holding himself back until Phoenix agreed or refused. It was a lot. They were going too fast. Yet the omega couldn’t deny that the concern was there for him too. If he got stuck in a bonding bite with Kristoph how bad would it be?
Even if that reasoning wasn’t there, he wanted to be with Miles. His feelings for the man had been stronger than typical friendship since they were friends. If Miles truly wanted this then—
“Bite me, but only if you want me. You don’t need to do it if you’ll regret it.”
As soon as he said those last few words, Miles growled once more.
“Like I would ever regret you.”
A kiss got pressed into his scent gland, teeth barely scraping over it shortly after. Phoenix shivered in delight, holding his breath until it happened. Sharp teeth pierced his skin, sending endorphins through his body as it turned limp. Phoenix could feel it, the racing of emotions — the love and care the man held for him. After a few moments he registered the feeling of a wet tongue cleaning his bite.
Growling he moved, going so quickly he knocked Miles down onto the mattress. He didn’t do any fanfare, licking to find the spot before biting down. Below him Miles stiffened, neck thrusting up as he let out a groan. Once it had been long enough he pulled his teeth out, licking the wound.
“Mine,” he said, voice low. “My alpha.”
He found himself crashing back down onto the bed, tangled up in his embrace. He was content to lay there forever, but as he came back down from the sudden burst he realized so many things.
“Fuck. Oh my, oh how am I gonna—”
Immediate the two separated.
“Phoenix? Phoenix please tell me that you don’t already regret this?”
“What? No! No, no! I just, how are we supposed to tell Trucy? She’ll know immediately. And then she’s gonna be upset when I tell her you’ll need to leave again and…”
“Phoenix, darling, it’s okay. Besides, I don’t have to leave.”
“But all your work—”
“When I say leave, it means staying in Germany all the time. I will still need to travel, but I don’t see any reason I can’t go back and forth. Perhaps you both could even join me. I understand there’s school for her but during breaks surely would be fine.”
“Are you sure you’d want that?”
“Oh Phoenix, I’ve always wanted you. Getting to take care of both of you would mean the world to me.”
The words wrapped him up like a warm blanket. Phoenix had always tried to trust what the prosecutor said. He didn’t believe him about his nightmare because he trusted the man. He tried yet couldn’t believe him when Miles said he didn’t think badly of Phoenix for losing his badge. Yet this, this he would believe without a second thought. The proof was right there in their bond. Miles wanted this, wants him and Trucy and everything that would come from it.
Curling close Phoenix sighed.
“Then would you want to come up to Kurain to pick her up?”
“Of course, my dear. After you rest for longer.”
Phoenix found himself drifting. The slight throbbing in his shoulder only bringing more pleasure to the arms around him and scent encompassing him. Despite everything he trusted that he’ll be protected and help. He could find some solace in all of this.
