Interviews Regarding the Suspect, Sinner 05

Summary:

The Sinners are asked what they think of Meursault in a series of interviews conducted by the N Corp. interrogation team after his arrest.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

The following is a transcript of all twelve interviews with each of the suspect's coworkers (hereinafter referred to as Sinners) by a member of the N Corp. interrogation team (abbreviated as INT). Reading of rights and expositional dialogue for each individual have been omitted for brevity; full versions of the transcripts can be accessed upon request. A summary of each interview has been written below each transcript as is standard practice to more accurately detail the experience of the interviewer. It should be noted that the Sinners were placed in separate rooms while waiting for their turns to be interviewed and were prevented from communicating with each other to prevent collusion.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 01]

INT: To begin, what do you think of the suspect?

01: You wish to inquire my thoughts regarding Meursault?

INT: Yes, Sinner 05, Meursault.

01: I ill wish to speak of one of my fellows behind his back...

INT: This information will not be shared with the suspect. Additionally, this information is required to give him a fair trial.

01: You describe an oxymoron.

INT: Pardon?

01: A "fair trial"... such a thing has yet to exist in the City.

INT: The suspect has and will continue to be provided with all services legally owed to him, including a high-class lawyer provided by N Corp. itself. Your rights have also been read to you; do you need to review them?

01: I believe I understand them adequately.

01: If you will excuse me.

[Sinner 01 rises from his seat and exits the interrogation room].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: Sinner 01 was reluctant to share information regarding the suspect "behind his back". It can be assumed that Sinner 01's opinion regarding the suspect is therefore negative.

Addendum: Investigation shows Sinner 01 has experienced legal troubles within T Corp. in the past. It is likely that Sinner 01 has subconscious resentment for the legal processes of Wings, and this interview will be discarded.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 02]

INT: What is your opinion regarding the suspect?

02: That information cannot be shared.

INT: Sinner 01 has already shared his opinion.

02: Faust is held to standards which differ from those of Faust's coworkers.

INT: May I view the documentation outlining these standards?

02: That information cannot be shared.

INT: Is there anything you can share regarding the suspect?

02: Yes, though that information is already accessible to you.

INT: Please elaborate on the information you are permitted to share regarding the suspect.

02: The suspect you refer to is Meursault, Sinner 05 of the Limbus Company Bus Team.

02: There have been no incidents or breaches of contract involving Sinner 05. Further details can be viewed on his work records which have already been sent to your superiors.

INT: ...

02: I have stated the requested information.

INT: ... Is there anything else?

02: You instructed Faust to provide all accessible information regarding the suspect, which I did. Additionally, you explained that I am not being detained and am free to leave at any point. Therefore, I will be leaving.

[Sinner 02 rises from her seat and exits the interrogation room].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: A lack of notable information and refusal to share any opinion of the suspect by Sinner 02 may indicate a negative work relationship.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 03]

INT: To begin, what is your opinion regarding the suspect?

03: Young Meursault 'tis a noble soul indeed! And what an injustice it is, that thou wouldst detain him so!

INT: The suspect's actions were in violation of the law, which he acknowledged; detaining him was an act of justice, by your definition.

03: He was present only because his job required him so! If he had informed us of his past, we would not have placed him in a position so precarious! 'Tis our fault, indeed...

INT: I can hear you perfectly fine, miss. You do not need to shout.

INT: Why do you think the suspect did not inform you of his exiled status?

03: By his own words, 'tis because we did not inquire him upon this subject.

INT: Does he only speak when asked?

03: Mmm... for the most part, indeed, though as of late he has taken to sharing or elaborating on information when none of us may be familiar with it.

INT: So he occasionally speaks without being spoken to?

03: Forsooth!

INT: So why wouldn't he share something so important with his company?

03: We are all plagued by pasts most unsavory; 'tis nothing strange to omit such harrowing details of one's own history.

INT: The omitted information regarding his exile would be, to most, an incredibly important thing to share that could compromise their position at their workplace. And yet the suspect did not say anything until he was already in handcuffs. Is that not strange?

03: Strange? Hm..

03: ...

03: Ah. I see what thou desirest to glean from my words.

03: I have made a mistake by speaking so much...

03: I have nothing more to say to you.

03: Good day, sir.

[Sinner 03 rises from her seat and exits the interrogation room].

[END OF INTERVIEW].

Summary: Sinner 03 reported on the suspect's odd behaviors. These behaviors are extremely unusual considering the severity of the suspect's situation. This aspect of the suspect is incredibly concerning and may indicate a lack of ability to feel or participate in the human experience. Additionally, Sinner 03 has an odd way of speaking and appears to be emulating chivalrous Fixers; it is possible her positive statements are a result of her act and not based on her actual personal opinion.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 04]

INT: What do you think of Sinner 05?

04: Y.W.L.A.

INT: ...

04: ...

[Thirty seconds pass without dialogue].

INT: Would you be able to provide the meaning of your acronym?

04: N.

[Sinner 04 attempts to light a cigarette].

INT: You are not permitted to smoke in this room, miss.

04: Tch.

[Sinner 04 rises from her seat and exits the interrogation room].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: Sinner 04 appeared to be annoyed for the entirety of the interviewing process. This likely indicates a negative work relationship with the suspect.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 06]

INT: So what is your opinion regarding the suspect?

06: Mm... I believe he is kind.

INT: In what way?

06: He's diligent and thorough in what he does, and always entertains the others' requests.

INT: Is that not just him performing his job as stipulated in his contract? In what way is that kind?

06: I'm only now getting used to this sort of thing, so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask...

06: Or maybe that makes me the right person to ask.

06: But I can tell that he is kind.

06: Perhaps it looks different from what you'd usually describe as kind, but...

06: It's kindness all the same, isn't it?

INT: I fail to see what you are describing. Can you give an example of the suspect's "kindness"?

06: He does what he's asked, down to the tiniest detail. He won't do things unless he's certain he understands what's being asked of him.

06: He's always observing others, committing everything they say and do to memory.

06: He often takes hits for others in combat, and prioritizes protecting our manager, even at his own demise.

06: He patiently explains things to others, and offers his insights when needed.

06: I don't recall our contracts saying we must do all of those things as diligently as he does.

INT: So the suspect has good work ethic.

INT: You have yet to explain how any of that is kind.

INT: Those are actions that only benefit the suspect himself.

INT: Does he perform his tasks with any sort of emotion? Gentleness, enthusiasm, anything similar to the "kindness" you say he has?

06: No offense, mister, but if you don't understand what I mean right now, I don't think you ever will.

06: And I don't think we all have to understand each other perfectly, anyway~

06: I'm not here to convince you of anything. I thought this was an interview after all.

INT: All dialogue is conducive to constructing an image of the suspect based on the views of his coworkers.

06: Ooh, did the others you interviewed before me give you a lot of trouble?

INT: ...

INT: Thank you for your cooperation. You may now leave.

06: Aw, I was enjoying our conversation.

06: Before I go, I'd like to say that I think you should try to broaden your perspective a little.

06: Not everyone acts the same way when doing the same thing. What may look like indifference to some may actually be deep emotion.

06: But I think you already made up your mind on how you feel about him, so all I can do is provide this little advice~

INT: ...

[Sinner 06 rises from his seat and walks to the door of the interrogation room].

[Sinner 06 pauses at the door and stares the interviewer in the eyes while smiling gently. Sinner 06 remains in this position for 18 seconds].

[Sinner 06 then exits the interrogation room].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: Sinner 06 described the suspect as doing the bare minimum at his workplace. Sinner 06 was unable to provide any meaningful evidence to support the "kindness" Sinner 06 apparently saw in the suspect. It is likely that Sinner 06 is convinced that he understands the suspect on a deeper level when he actually does not. This is a repeated occurrence observed within the suspect's work relationships (see documents regarding his past employment at Grand Magasin Sisyphe).

Addendum: The tildes were necessary to convey Sinner 06's tone.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 07]

INT: What is your opinion of the suspect?

07: Oi, I've seen enough of this type of shite to know you're just tryin' to get me to say something you can use against him, yeah?

INT: This interview is being conducted for the suspect's sake, as part of the legal processes owed to him as explained to you moments ago.

INT: Do we need to review your rights and the expository dialogue to ensure your understanding?

07: I got it, I already said I got it!

07: Don't make me sit through all that again!

INT: So you understand that this interview is being conducted for his benefit.

07: That's what you blokes always say.

INT: You did not answer my question.

[Sinner 07 gestures inappropriately].

INT: Sinner 07, I implore you to provide a proper response to my question. If you are worried about your words being used against the suspect, then understand that this interview is being conducted in an unbiased manner and all information gathered will be evaluated by a third party as well as the audience in court.

INT: In more casual terms, this is your opportunity to help him.

INT: Your coworkers have been similarly difficult to glean any thoughts from.

INT: While we, the investigation and interrogation team, are unbiased, I cannot say the same for the audience in court.

INT: How would it look to the gallery if none of the suspects coworkers, with which the suspect had spent over a year together at a live-in job environment working side-by-side daily, had anything to say about him?

INT: Would it not give a negative appearance?

INT: If you care about the suspect, you would find it in your heart to share something about him.

07: Argh...

07: You assholes are always tryin' to get up in my head like that...

07: Ain't he supposed to get a lawyer that'll explain all this to the crowd?

INT: Yes, but there is no guarantee that the gallery will be convinced by words with no evidence to back them up.

07: I didn't wanna say anything to you, but if it's for his sake...

07: Look... I'm— I ain't any good with words, alright? Never have been.

07: But he...

07: I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say 'bout the work we do, but...

07: There was... there was a time I was in a real bad spot, real desperate, real angry.

07: Felt like everyone was against me... felt like the whole world was against me. Felt like this shitty universe was built only to make me suffer.

07: But he spoke up, said we should do somethin' different, even if it meant we'd miss our goal.

07: For my sake.

07: And later, without bein' asked, he helped me out again.

07: It...

07: It meant a lot to me.

07: ...

07: Look, you just had to be there, alright?!

07: ...

07: And the others are always pickin' on me, calling me stupid or a brute, but whenever I've got questions he answers them without judging me.

07: Sometimes it's the small stuff that means the most.

INT: I see.

07: You don't see shite.

07: You've got a cushy life in the Nest, workin' for a Wing. You don't know what it's like to be judged by everyone, all the time, before you can even get a word out.

07: I know that guy was also a Feather, but...

07: Sometimes I get the feelin' that he went through the same thing.

07: Like he's been judged all the time.

07: But he's too nice. Me, I just get mad, I just beat the shite out of everyone who looks at me wrong. He just stands there, lookin' the same as always. He—

[Sinner 07 is interrupted by the interviewer].

INT: I believe that is enough. You are free to leave now.

07: ...

[Sinner 07 rises from his seat and approaches the door. He gestures inappropriately at the interviewer before exiting].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: Though Sinner 07 did provide a genuine example of the suspect going out of his way to aid him, Sinner 07 seemed very reluctant to share this information. This may indicate that the suspect's actions were done for the benefit of the suspect rather than Sinner 07. This conclusion is aided by Sinner 07's angry and belligerent temperament. It is likely that the suspect only aided Sinner 07 in order to pacify him and reign in his outburst. It is also possible that Sinner 07 is projecting upon the suspect in order to comfort his own self in a stressful work environment.

Addendum: The "inappropriate gestures" that Sinner 07 made were middle fingers.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 08]

INT: So what do you—

08: I'd like an attorney.

INT: You are not being detained, nor are you under investigation. This is an interview to help us understand the suspect.

08: You're just going to twist my words later, right?

08: I don't know how much info you got out of the others who went before me, but unlike them, I know how these "interviews" go.

08: You just want to make him look bad.

INT: This topic was already explained to you during the expository dialogue.

08: Yeah, and I wanted my opinion on the part of the transcript you actually post, instead of cutting off.

INT: Then you know that everything you have said will be usable as evidence during the suspect's retrial.

08: And I'm not saying anything without an attorney.

INT: You do understand that your hostility and refusal to speak will only come across negatively and give a poor impression of the suspect to the gallery, correct?

08: The gallery aren't a bunch of idiots. They can come to their own conclusions about this.

INT: I never implied that they were incapable of such.

INT: I am only giving you advice from the perspective of an unbiased interviewer.

INT: This is your only chance to say something that can help him.

INT: If you decide to not talk, then your decision is free to be interpreted in any way the gallery wishes.

INT: But if you articulate yourself and your opinions properly, your interview alone may be enough to convince the gallery in the suspect's favor.

INT: I do not benefit from either case. Again, I am only giving advice as an unbiased party.

08: Unbiased my ass...

08: You Wing people always do whatever you can to save face.

08: Oh, not that I'd mind working for a Wing.

08: I believe my experiences are unique enough to make me a useful asset for any Wing, if anyone reading this is hiring.

08: What I mean is, in this specific instance, this interviewing process is clearly being performed because the interviewers don't view the gallery as intelligent enough to come to their own conclusions about "the suspect" and instead need a bunch of personal opinions to get twisted up to tell a false narrative in order to decide how they feel for them.

INT: That does not invalidate what I said.

08: You won't listen anyway.

08: Look, I'll say this one thing, just because I have a feeling my other coworkers will blab on and on because they don't realize how this works.

08: Meursault is someone who might be difficult for others to understand. I sit right next to the guy and I still don't really get him.

08: But that doesn't make him a bad person.

08: You clearly don't understand me right now, but does that make me a bad person?

08: No, it doesn't.

08: You can't define people so easily like that.

08: It's not all black and white.

08: So whatever the others end up saying like the idiots they are, I want everyone to be aware that even if it makes the guy sound strange, you can't form your entire view of a person based on that.

08: That's not how it works.

08: Are we done here?

INT: As stated in your rights, you are not being detained and are free to leave at any point.

08: Great. Bye, then.

[Sinner 08 rises from her seat and exits the interrogation room].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: Sinner 08 seemed to be biased against N Corp. itself, making the contents of her interview inherently hostile. Sinner 08 also admitted her inability to understand the suspect. This aligns with interviews conducted with the suspect's coworkers at his previous place of employment before his first trial, indicating a lack of change in the suspect's personality and ability to participate in the human experience despite his exile and ample time to do so.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 09]

INT: What is your opinion regarding the suspect?

09: Meur? He's a good cook, he's got a great memory, um, he's pretty good at fighting...

09: We're just coworkers so it's not like we're close or anything. What, you want advice so you can ask him out?~

INT: You were properly informed of the purpose of this interview earlier.

09: I know, I know, just kidding~ You N Corp. people have no sense of humor, y'know?

INT: The suspect is a former N Corp. employee and was raised in N Corp. Would you say that your statement includes him, too?

09: Hey, don't read into everything I'm saying!

09: That's not fair!

INT: I asked that because I wanted to leave no room for doubt or "reading into" what you said.

09: Sure, whatever.

09: I can't lie to ya. The guy's got no sense of humor at all!

09: But that doesn't mean anything when an entire District has no sense of humor.

INT: I see.

INT: Does he display any other emotions to compensate for his lack of humor?

09: Nah, not really? The guy's kinda stone-faced, like, all the time.

09: He definitely cares, though, 'cause he's always listening and remembers everything he hears.

09: So it's like...

09: He's not really social, or funny, or enthusiastic about anything, but it doesn't mean anything bad about him?

INT: Is that a question or a conclusion?

09: I meant like, do you get what I mean?

INT: My understanding does not matter. You should prioritize communicating what you wish to say about the suspect.

09: Yeah, but do you get it or nah?

INT: ... I do "get it".

09: Mmmmnah, you don't.

INT: This is a pointless argument.

09: I'm not arguing!

INT: ...

09: But it's like, can say whatever makes sense to me, but if you don't get it, it means diddly squat.

09: 'Cause you're the one who's gonna write down what I say and look at it and explain it to others or whatever.

INT: I am uninvolved in the process you are describing. I am only an unbiased interviewer. My job is to ask the required questions and help you expand upon your thoughts.

INT: Have you ever seen the suspect display any emotions at all?

09: Duh, of course. The guy's human.

INT: Can you give an example?

09: Uh, lemme see...

09: Well... I mean, there's times during our work where we can get real messed up in the head for a bit.

09: When it happens to him, he usually gets pretty angry.

09: Otherwise nothing bothers him. I think he keeps himself together to be nice.

INT: I see.

INT: This concludes our interview.

09: What? I had so much more I wanted to say!

INT: Like what?

09: Some higher ups somewhere're gonna read everything I say, right? Then I wanna say, you're all a bunch of [The contents of the remainder of Sinner 09's speech have been redacted for the sake of maintaining professionalism and because this interview will be discarded (see summary). An uncensored transcript can be viewed upon request, though it is not recommended as the censored contents are meaningless insults and drivel.

INT: Thank you for your cooperation. You may now exit.

[Sinner 09 rises from her seat and exits the interrogation room].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: Sinner 09's tone and the contents of her answers suggest that she was not taking this interview seriously. Additionally, Sinner 09 is native to the Backstreets and has close ties with an organization which opposes the structure of the Wings (see additional documentation on the Yurodivye). It is clear that Sinner 09's words are heavily biased and cannot be trusted as evidence; this interview will be discarded.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 10]

Sinner 10 is incapable of communicating via normal means and required a translator. The only translators available were the other Sinners, which would create a conflict of interest. Therefore, Sinner 10 was not interviewed.

Addendum: When this was explained to Sinner 10, their body language resembled that of someone upset or indignant. This may indicate a poor work relationship with the suspect, especially as Sinner 10 is the suspect's manager.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 11]

INT: What do you think of the suspect?

11: I don't really know... I haven't talked to him very much.

INT: Does he avoid you?

11: N-no, not at all! It's more my fault...

INT: Is there a reason you have not spoken with him much?

11: Not really, uhm... I guess we never have the chance, or I never have anything to say...

11: He doesn't talk much at all, and I usually try to listen to what the others are saying anyway...

INT: How does the suspect come across to you? Rather, how would you describe him?

11: Well, he's... quiet. He takes everything seriously— I mean, he does his job professionally. He works really hard to remember everything he hears, and he goes out of his way to protect the manager during fights.

INT: What about as a person?

11: W-well... I don't know.

INT: Please try to describe your personal opinion of the suspect. We have all the time in the world, so do not worry about how you phrase your thoughts.

11: Okay, sorry— I mean, thank you.

11: Uh, well...

11: I don't think we agree on much...?

11: Or I mean...

11: We've never had any disagreements, but the way he acts and goes about things...

11: I don't think it, really, uhm, aligns with what I, believe...?

11: Sorry, please forget what I just said!

11: He's not a bad person, I think, so please don't treat him unfairly.

INT: Do not worry, your answers have been understood.

INT: Is there anything else you would like to share regarding the suspect?

11: I don't think so... I hope he's alright.

11: Will we get to visit him at all?

INT: That is a question for another member of staff. I am only the interviewer.

11: Ah, okay.

11: Sorry for stuttering so much. I've never been interviewed like this, so...

11: I was expecting it to be more intense.

INT: That is a common misconception.

INT: As previously stated, you are not being detained and are free to leave at any point.

INT: The purpose of this interview is for you to help us understand who the suspect is as a person and view him the same way you do.

INT: If you feel you have succeeded in this, then you are free to leave.

11: D-do you want me to leave?

INT: Do you have anything else you wish to share?

11: No...

INT: Then you may leave. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

11: Okay...

[Sinner 11 rises from his seat and exits the interrogation room].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: Sinner 11 seems to personally disagree with and potentially dislikes the suspect. Sinner 11 appears to be more emotional than the other Sinners. It is possible that Sinner 11 is more in-tune with his emotions and the emotions of others, and is perceptive enough to understand the suspect's true nature and is disturbed by it.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 12]

INT: What is your opinion regarding the suspect?

12: He is an excellent and diligent coworker. Any company would be proud to hire him.

12: Excuse me.

[Sinner 12 rises from her seat and exits the interrogation room].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: Sinner 12 appears to have a military background. It is possible she has trauma regarding interrogation-type situations and was reluctant to speak her mind about the suspect. This may indicate a negative work relationship with the suspect, or a negative personal opinion of the suspect.

[INTERVIEW WITH SINNER 13]

INT: What is your opinion regarding the suspect?

13: Hey, isn't this not allowed? Something like a "conflict of interest"?

INT: What?

13: I mean, my mom's, you know...

INT: One moment.

[INT reviews documents on his provided device].

INT: It seems you are correct. I apologize for not diligently reviewing the provided documentation prior.

13: Nah, it's all good. I have nothing to say to you, anyway. I've seen enough of you fellas during the War.

13: Just needed an excuse to leave early without getting an earful from you.

[Sinner 13 rises from his seat and approaches the exit].

INT: So you have nothing to say regarding the suspect?

[Sinner 13 pauses for a moment, and then sighs].

13: Nah.

[Sinner 13 hesitates like he has something to say, then exits].

[END OF INTERVIEW]

Summary: Though the contents of this interview cannot be cited in court, Sinner 13's behavior is permitted and will be described.

Sinner 13 appeared somewhat nervous but feigning confidence. He seemed eager to have a reason to get out of the interview. This may indicate a poor opinion of the suspect or a poor work relationship regarding the suspect.

Sinner 13's familial ties to N Corp. and the suspect's previous employment at N Corp. may have convinced Sinner 13 that speaking ill of the suspect may have consequences. Ultimately this points to the suspect intimidating his coworkers in some way, potentially on purpose or in the very least as a result of his lack of participation in the human experience.

It can be concluded that, based upon descriptions provided by the suspect's coworkers with whom he has spent over a year working, the suspect's behaviors have not changed since the original trial regarding his case.

No meaningful evidence supporting emotional development or growth was provided by any of the suspect's coworkers. The Sinners could only describe him as hardworking and diligent, which are the bare minimum qualities for working for any company and are not indicative of any positive aspect of the suspect's character. The inability of the Sinners to describe him in any other way makes this more than clear.

It can be said that the suspect remains unable to participate in the human experience under its common definition.

It should be noted that the suspect was given the mercy of only being exiled because the judge saw potential for his emotional development and the possibility of him becoming capable of participating in the human experience.

However, as previously stated, it is clear the suspect still cannot participate in the human experience.

End of report.

Notes:

idk what this is sorry

gregor hesitates at the end because he wanted to leave with some sort of snarky one-liner but couldn't think of anything on the fly because he's pathetic like that
