Work Header

it started out with a kiss (how did it end up like this?)

Summary:

Tim gazed into his brother's bedroom and froze.

Dick was laying in bed, on his side. His blue eyes were open and he had a tired smile on his face. Across from him, in his bed, was a red headed boy, whose hair was sticking out at all angles. A boy, in bed with his brother, a boy his brother was gazing at with such adoration in his eyes.

Work Text:

Tim had just finished patrol when he decided to go to Blüdhaven. It had been a quiet night, he'd only stopped a few robberies, it had only been him and Red Hood patrolling. The two still had their differences but got on fairly well now, and Bruce felt comfortable enough to let them go out together.

He hadn't seen Dick in a while. It had been a month since he last saw his eldest brother at the manor. Dick always seemed busy these days. Honestly, Tim missed him.

It started to rain just as he grappled into Blüdhaven. It started off light but got heavy very quickly. Tim wished he could get to Dicks apartment already, his suit was soaked through.

Tim had been to Dicks apartment quite a few times, and he had made it very clear that if any of his siblings needed him they were always welcome in Blüdhaven. They'd all taken him up on that offer many times, and sometimes they visited him just because. They never really gave him a warning before they showed up.

Tim quietly landed on the balcony of Dick's apartment. He lived on the top floor, so Tim didn't need to worry about anyone spotting him. He went to open the glass door of the balcony that opened up into Dicks bedroom. The floor length curtains weren't drawn, which was strange.

It didn't take a detective to realize what was going on here. Dick had a boyfriend, and his boyfriend was Wally West.

Tim watched in horror as Dick leaned over and kissed Wally on the nose. It was so sickeningly domestic.

He probably shouldn't have been surprised, Dick and Wally had a will they, won't they thing going on for a while, and they were best friends, they had been friends for years. Since they were kids, back when they were still Kid Flash and Robin. Tim just didn't know Dick was into guys. He'd never mentioned it before.

Tim was just about to turn around a leave, when Dick glanced out at the balcony and spotted him. His brother looked taken back, before saying something to Wally, who turned around and saw Tim too. Shit. He sighed, and slid open the balcony door. There was no turning back now.

“Hey,” Tim said, awkwardly, as he stood in the doorway of Dick's bedroom. Dick quickly climbed out of bed, and Wally was still looking at him.

“Tim! What're you doing here? Your suit is soaked!” Dick exclaimed, watching as the water on Tim's cape dripped onto the hardwood floor. “Wally, go get him a towel, please.”

Tim watched as Wally zipped off, and was then standing in front of him, holding out a grey towel. Tim thanked him and started patting himself down with it, before peeling off his Domino mask.

“I haven't seen you in a while, Dick. I just wanted to check up on you. I didn't want to intrude or anything,” Tim stammered, as he continued drying himself off.

An easy smile returned to Dick's face. “You aren't intruding, Tim. I probably should have told everyone Wally and I have been dating months ago-”

“Months?” Tim cut him off. He hasn't expected Dick to keep this a secret for so long.

Dick chuckled. “Yes, months. I've just been putting it off. Anyway, want some tea?”

Tim was still a little flabbergasted. He looked from Wally to Dick for a minute. The speedster looked really sleepy, and Dick was leaning against him a little. He sighed.

“Yeah, I'll take some tea.”

It seemed like a normal day at the Watchtower to Bruce. Their meeting went smoothly and the League all seemed content. Even Hal had shown up on time, it was perfect as things could be.

He had stayed behind to talk with Clark about some of Luthor’s most recent crimes, and agreed to look further into some of his dealings. He didn't think anyone else was left in the Watchtower.

“Want some coffee before we leave?” Superman asked, as they both walked towards the communal kitchen. Bruce grunted in response, and Clark grabbed them both cups, one with the Superman logo, the other with a Green Lantern one, no doubt one that Jordan had left behind.

Bruce wandered into the lounge area, Clark knew how he took his coffee by now, and stopped in his tracks when he spotted two figures curled up on the couch.

Dick and Wally.

Wally was sprawled out like a starfish, snoring lightly, his head tilted forward, resting on Ficks head. Dick was curled up under the Flash’s arm, head resting against his chest. Wally's cowl was on the floor, and Dicks domino mask was peeling off at the corner.

Now, Bruce's kids would tell you he is oblivious. That he never knows who his kids are dating or hanging out with, and sometimes they were right. But he didn't miss obvious signs, like this. He had suspected the two were dating for a while now. He knew Dick has had a crush on his best friend for years now. A soft smile settled on Bruce's face.

Clark walked in, and passed the Lantern cup to him, which he took with a grunt. Kent looked over at the two boys for a moment, before turning back to Bruce.

“Took them long enough.”

Bruce smiled a little wider. “Agreed.”

Jason wasn't a big fan of going to anyone for help. He was independent and he could handle himself and he definitely didn't need any Bat interference. But even Jason knows when he needs to ask for help. Like right now.

It had started as a simple drug bust. There was a group of idiots unloading a shipment of drugs into a warehouse by the docks. They were sloppy, and Red Hood had caught them on multiple security cameras. They weren't even wearing masks! What he didn't know was that one of them had a pistol, and that's how he ended up with a bullet hole through his thigh. It hurt like a bitch.

He went back to his nearest safehouse. He had dealt with bullet wounds before, and this was a clean shit that had gone straight through. Jason almost passed out at the sight of the shot and knew he couldn't stitch this up himself. How hands were shaking and he felt nauseous.

That's how he ended up back at Dick's apartment at five in the morning. He had managed to climb onto his bike and speed over to his brother's Blüdhaven apartment. The manor would have been much closer, but Jason didn't want to deal with Bruce right now.

He spotted an open window on the top floor that led into Dick's living room and threw himself through it, landing on the carpeted floor with a loud thud. Dick came running out of his bedroom in seconds, wearing flannel pants without a shirt.

“Jason?” He yelled, exasperated.

“Yeah, yeah, it's me, loser,” Jason said, trying to pull himself into a sitting up position.

Dick shook his head. “You're bleeding onto my carpet.”

“Are you gonna help me or not?”Jason rolled his eyes under his helmet.

“Babe?”

Jason's head shot up quickly. Babe? Who the fuck was calling his brother BABE? That's when he saw Wally West, rubbing his eyes, sleepily, wearing Batman pajamas pants. Jason couldn't stop himself from laughing.

“What are you doing here, Wallace?” Jason asked, grinning under his mask.

Wally startled, like a spooked cat, and looked at Jason with wide eyes, now wide awake.

“I…I can…what-” Wally stumbled over his words.

Jason pulled off his mask, still laughing. “You're dating this loser?”

Wally looked like deer in headlights, still stammering. Dick rolled his eyes. “It's alright, Walls, Jason isn't going to tell anyone, right?” Dick gave a look.

“Yeah, whatever, can you help me please, I am actively bleeding out right now.”

Steph was bored. She had been benched from Batgirl after she broke her arm. Stupid Mr Freeze had frozen the warehouse floor, which caused her to not so elegantly slip and land in her arm. It was embarrassing. Tim hadn't stopped making fun of her since then. She hadn't let him sign her cast.

She hadn't been to Blüdhaven in a while, and decided a trip to see Nightwing would be fun. Dick hadn't signed her purple cast yet, and she was getting it off soon. She knew Dick would be a little upset if he didn't get to sign it.

The elevator in Dicks apartment was broken, as per usual, so she made the long journey to the top floor by stairs. Why did he insist on living on the top floor?

Steph hadn't warned him that she'd be coming. Dick wasn't usually busy, and if he wasn't there then she'd just wait for him at his apartment. They all had spare keys, though usually they came through the window. She couldn't do that now, so front door it was.

Steph didn't even bother knocking, and opened the front door, which was already unlocked. Dick must be home. He wasn't in the kitchen or living room, which Steph glanced around when she first walked in. She walked towards his bedroom, the door already slightly ajar. She pushed it open, and she jumped back in surprise.

There was Dick Grayson, sitting in Wally Wests, the Flash and his best friends, lap, sucking face. They hadn't even noticed her, eyes closed. She recoiled back further in disgust. She wanted to grab bleach from the kitchen and pour it into her eyes. Ew.

“Umm”

Dick threw himself backwards in shock, falling onto the ground in a crumpled heap, and Wally ran off, white bolts of electricity flying past her.

“Steph… what are you doing here?” Dick mumbled, sitting up from his spot on the ground.

Damian enjoyed patrolling with his eldest brother. While Dick was immature and foolish, he was a good fighter. A great one, even. He'd never admit it, but Dick may be even better than him.

He loved when Dick joined them on Gotham patrol. It felt similar to when it was just the two of them, as Batman and Robin. They worked well together.

They were just ziptieing the last of the criminals that had started a gang fight on the outskirts of Crime Alley, that Red Hood had been too busy to take care of, when a red blur shot past Damian. He looked up quickly, to see West, the Flash, or one of them at least, leaning an arm on his brother's shoulder. Damian knew the two of them were good friends, and had grown up together. Damian even knew West quite well, as he seemed to be with Dick more than he wasn't. Damian really shouldn't have been as taken back as he was when Nightwing easily kissed the red head on the lips.

“Grayson, what are you doing?” Damian asked, sharply. Dick looked over at him, a small smile on his face.

“Damian, Wally is my boyfriend.”

Damian narrowed his eyes at West. “I see.” He was going to have to “talk” with him soon. If Wests hurts his brother he'll regret it. Damian will always defend his brother's honour.

West looked at him nervously. “What do you think, Dami?”

“If you hurt him I'll castrate you, you dumb im-”

“That's enough, Dames."

Dick figured it was probably time to properly tell his family about Wally. Sure, one or two of them already knew, but he wanted his entire family to know. They'd been dating for quite a while now. Dick loved him more than anything. He loves him so, so much for so, so long. So he planned a family dinner.

He had prepared Wally enough for his family. He already knew most of them, working in the vigilante business and just being around Dick a lot, and he had warned him about the threats that would probably start coming his way soon. His family loved shovel talks.

So, here he was, at family dinner, with Wally by his side. “Everyone,” he announced, when everyone was sat down, “you all know Wally. I just wanted to let you all know that he's my boyfriend.”

Dick hadn't expected to be met by radio silence. All of his family, staring at him. “Is…that ok?”

Tim raised an eyebrow. “I already knew.”

Jason nodded. “Yeah, dude.”

“What? How?” Dick asked, confused.

“I've been traumatised for life by you two, of course I already knew,” Steph made a sound of disgust.

Jason laughed, loudly. “Wally looked so scared when he saw me, how did you both forget?”

Wally sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck, looking away.

“You told me, Grayson.” Damian talked his eyes.

Dick glanced over at Bruce. “Did you know?”

B nodded, not even looking up from his plate. Dick blinked. Huh. “So you all know?”

“No!” Duke yelled, shaking his head aggressively. “I didn't! How do you all know? What the hell!”

“Well, now you know,” Jason smirked.

“What the hell,” Duke repeated, looking into space.

“I know,” Cass spoke up. That one wasn't a surprise. Cass knew everything.

Dick smiled to himself, and grabbed Wally's hand under the table, as the conversations he'd interrupted resumed. He looked over at his boyfriend, who was softly smiling back at him. He wouldn't trade this for anything.
