A Little Less Alone

Summary:

Sasuke never thought he needed affection—until Sakura's touch quietly became his favorite habit.

Now, he finds himself reaching for her without even realizing it.

Notes:

Well, guys, I think I can officially say that I’ve translated and posted almost all of the SasuSaku fics I’ve written over the years 😭💗 Not all of them are posted yet, but the list is getting dangerously short. If you take a look, I’ve posted 15+ oneshots already, so if you have the time, please give some of them a chance! I really hope you’ll find something you like. 🥹

Anyway, I clearly have a weakness for soft, touchy, emotionally-confused Sasuke, so expect more of that because I am not recovering anytime soon. 😭 I genuinely think Sasuke would be ridiculously clingy once he actually feels safe enough in a relationship, he’d probably pretend he isn’t while quietly following Sakura around the house like a shadow. 💀

Anywayyy, enjoy the fic, and if you read any of my other ones too, I hope you have as much fun with them as I had writing them! ♡

Now go read. I’ll be over here making Sasuke emotionally vulnerable again. 🫶🏻

Work Text:

Sasuke had never been particularly comfortable with touch, and Sakura had noticed that long before she ever found the right word for it, although it was not something he had told her or something she had consciously set out to discover, but rather one of those quiet details that revealed themselves only after knowing someone for a very long time, hidden in moments so ordinary that anyone who loved him less carefully might have forgotten them before the day was even over.

Sasuke was not naturally affectionate, nor had he ever possessed the easy familiarity with physical closeness that seemed to come so effortlessly to other people, because there had always been a certain distance in the way he carried himself, a quiet and almost instinctive separation between his body and the world around him, as though an invisible boundary had been drawn there years ago and everyone who came near him somehow understood that crossing it without permission would be a mistake. Even when they had been children, there had been something untouchable about him, something fiercely self-contained that made it seem as though he belonged entirely to himself and had neither the intention nor the desire to allow anyone else too close.

In the beginning, Sakura did not think very much about it, perhaps because she had always been more inclined to follow affection than analyze it, and so whenever she wanted to touch him, she simply did.

The first few times she reached for his hand while they were walking, Sasuke would glance down at their joined fingers with an expression so completely blank that it was almost comical, as though he had only just realized what she had done and had not yet decided whether he was expected to react to it, but although he looked at their hands for several seconds longer than any ordinary person probably would have, he never pulled away, and Sakura quickly learned that with Sasuke, the things he allowed often said far more than the things he actually spoke.

He did not always know how to respond to affection, but neither did he reject hers, and for Sakura, especially in those early days when every small allowance felt precious, that was more than enough.

Sometimes, after a long day when they found themselves sitting together in the quiet of the house, Sakura would gradually lean against his shoulder without announcing what she intended to do, allowing her head to settle there with the comfortable familiarity she hoped would one day become natural to both of them, and every time she did she could feel the subtle change that moved through him. Sasuke would become completely still for the first few seconds, his body holding itself with that familiar and almost instinctive caution, as though some forgotten part of him was searching desperately for the correct response to being touched by someone who wanted nothing from him except the simple comfort of being close.

It was not tension exactly, at least not in the ordinary sense, because he never seemed afraid of her touch and certainly never behaved as though he wanted her to move away, but there was an uncertainty in him that Sakura gradually came to understand, something almost painfully revealing in the way a man who could face danger without hesitation sometimes seemed completely unprepared for tenderness.

It was as though his body had learned how to endure pain long before anyone had ever taught it what to do with kindness.

Sakura noticed that, just as she noticed nearly everything about him, including the way his shoulders would slowly loosen if she remained there long enough, the tension leaving him so gradually that someone who was not paying careful attention might never have realized it had existed at all. She noticed that when he was tired his fingers sometimes caught unconsciously in the fabric of her sleeve, never tightly enough to prevent her from moving but just firmly enough to make it obvious that some unguarded part of him wanted her to remain where she was, and she noticed how he would sometimes shift closer without seeming aware of the movement, quietly closing the small distance between them until their shoulders touched once more.

She never teased him for any of it, because even then Sakura understood that there were parts of Sasuke that could not be rushed without causing him to retreat, and that the boy who had spent so many years teaching himself how to live without reaching for anyone had learned to carry everything alone so thoroughly that even the smallest signs of dependence seemed to surprise him.

So Sakura never made those moments important enough to frighten him.She did not point out every time he allowed her closer, did not laugh when he stiffened for a few seconds beneath her touch, and never asked why he seemed uncertain whenever she wrapped her arms around him, because she had no interest in forcing him to explain something he was still learning for himself.

Instead, she simply continued.

Her hand would find his while they walked, her fingers would brush his arm when she passed behind him, her head would settle against his shoulder when they sat together, and whenever he returned from a mission she would wrap her arms around him in a quiet hug before sometimes pressing a brief kiss against his cheek as she left the room, allowing affection to become something so ordinary between them that eventually there would be nothing for him to fear in it.

They were small things, everyday things that carried no great ceremony for Sakura because they came naturally from the simple fact that she loved him and wanted to be close to him, and perhaps Sasuke never completely understood them in the beginning, but somewhere along the way he began associating the warmth of her hand and the familiar weight of her body against his with something safe, something that felt increasingly like home and offered the quiet relief of knowing that he no longer needed to keep every part of himself guarded.

Whatever the reason, Sakura noticed the change long before Sasuke ever acknowledged it, although at first it happened so subtly that she occasionally wondered whether she was imagining it.

He started sitting closer to her, never dramatically enough to make the change obvious and certainly never with any announcement that he had suddenly decided he wanted her near him, because Sasuke would never have done anything so straightforward, but instead through small choices that gradually became impossible to ignore. If Sakura sat at one end of the couch, he would choose the space beside her rather than the chair across the room, and if she rested her head against his shoulder, he no longer became completely still before relaxing, because sometimes, after only a few moments, she would feel him lean into her instead.

Then there were the times when she caught him looking for her.

She could be somewhere in the house occupied with something entirely mundane, sorting medical notes or preparing tea or folding clothes, and Sasuke would simply appear in the doorway without asking what she was doing or claiming that he needed anything, standing there for a quiet moment while he watched her before eventually moving closer and settling somewhere nearby as though her presence itself had become enough of a reason to remain.

The first time Sakura consciously noticed it, she had been sitting at the table sorting through a pile of medical notes when she looked up and found Sasuke standing beside her without any apparent explanation.

“Do you need something?” she asked.

“No.”

Sakura stared at him for a second before glancing toward the papers in front of her. “Then why are you here?”

His eyes moved briefly across the documents before returning to her face, and after a moment he answered with the remarkable simplicity he seemed to reserve for questions he apparently considered unnecessary.

“Nothing.”

A smile pulled at the corner of Sakura's mouth. “You're strange.”

He gave her the faintest frown, but instead of leaving he pulled out the chair beside hers and sat down, offering no further explanation as Sakura returned to her work, and several minutes later, when she felt the fabric of his sleeve brush softly against her arm, she looked down to find their elbows almost touching.

She smiled quietly to herself and continued writing.

That was how it happened between them, because the important changes in their relationship rarely announced themselves loudly enough to be noticed at the exact moment they began, and instead slipped quietly into ordinary days until one afternoon Sakura looked back and realized that something fundamental had changed without either of them ever deciding it should.

At first Sakura had been the one reaching for him, but after several months Sasuke had begun reaching back, and somewhere along the way, without either of them quite understanding when the transformation had taken place, Sakura stopped being the person teaching him how to tolerate touch and became the person he instinctively searched for whenever he wanted the comfort of another body close to his own.

Naturally, Sakura was the first to notice, because she had always been paying attention to him, and the first time she truly realized that Sasuke no longer merely permitted her affection but had begun actively seeking it, she found herself staring at him for several seconds and trying to reconcile the man in front of her with the distant boy she had once known.

There had been no particular day she could identify as the beginning, no sudden revelation in which Sasuke discovered that he enjoyed being touched, and certainly no awkward confession that he had somehow transformed into an affectionate person overnight, because changes in Sasuke rarely happened through declarations. They crept quietly through his life, hiding themselves among ordinary moments until eventually Sakura looked back and realized that something she had once considered impossible had become completely normal.

He started sitting beside her rather than opposite her, sometimes even when there were perfectly sensible reasons to choose another seat, positioning himself close enough that their knees brushed beneath the table, and whenever Sakura stood somewhere for long enough he seemed to develop an inexplicable tendency to appear nearby, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed while she worked until one of them shifted and their shoulders touched.

Neither of them commented on it, but Sakura noticed.

When they walked through crowded streets, his hand began settling against the small of her back almost automatically, and at first Sakura assumed the gesture was merely practical, something he did to keep them from becoming separated among too many people, but eventually she realized he continued doing it even when the streets were nearly empty, his palm touching her briefly whenever they crossed a road or moved through a narrow passage, the gesture becoming so natural that he seemed entirely unaware of it.

Sometimes, when they sat together, his fingers began finding hers, and the difference was that Sakura had not reached for him first.

*He had.*

The first time it happened, she nearly stumbled over her own feet.

They had been walking home late in the evening when the village was quieter than it had been during the day, most of the shops already closed while warm lantern light spilled across the slowly emptying streets, and Sakura had spent the better part of ten minutes enthusiastically recounting an incident at the hospital involving one of the younger medics who had somehow confused two entirely different sets of instructions and consequently spent an entire afternoon apologizing to three different people.

“And then he had the nerve to tell me that the instructions weren't clear,” Sakura continued indignantly, lifting one hand into the air while Sasuke walked beside her with both hands tucked into his pockets. “They were perfectly clear, because I wrote them myself and even underlined the important part twice.”

“You underlined it twice?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because apparently once wasn't enough.”

A faint sound escaped him, barely audible beneath the quiet of the street, and Sakura immediately glanced sideways.

“Was that a laugh?”

“No.”

Her eyes narrowed with amusement. “You're getting worse at lying.”

“You talk too much.”

“You say that like you don't secretly enjoy listening to me.”

“I didn't say that.”

“Exactly.”

Still smiling to herself, Sakura turned her attention back toward the road and continued talking, completely unaware that the conversation was about to become irrelevant, because halfway through another complaint she suddenly felt something warm brush against her hand.

She barely had enough time to register the contact before Sasuke's fingers slipped between hers and settled there with astonishing ease, intertwining with her own as though reaching for Sakura's hand had always been the most natural gesture in the world.

For several seconds she stopped speaking entirely, continuing to walk only because the rest of her body had not yet caught up with her thoughts, and when realization finally arrived she stumbled slightly over her own foot.

Sasuke immediately turned his head toward her.

“What?”

Sakura stared down at their joined hands, taking in the comfortable looseness of his grip and the way his thumb rested softly against the side of hers.

“You took my hand.”

Sasuke followed her gaze downward, paused briefly as if confirming the obvious, and looked back at her.

“Yes.”

She blinked at him. “You never do that first.”

“I do now.”

The casual simplicity of the answer completely disarmed her because there was no embarrassment in his voice and no uncertainty in his expression, as though he genuinely saw nothing unusual about what he had done while Sakura could already feel warmth spreading slowly toward her neck.

“You do now,” she repeated, still slightly stunned.

“Yes.”

Sakura narrowed her eyes at him suspiciously. “When did that happen?”

“What?”

“When exactly did you decide you were going to start holding my hand?”

“I didn't decide.”

“Then what happened?”

Sasuke remained quiet for a moment, apparently giving the question far more consideration than Sakura had expected, before his gaze dropped briefly toward their intertwined fingers.

“I wanted to.”

The answer consisted of only a few words and contained nothing particularly poetic, but Sakura felt them settle somewhere deep inside her chest precisely because Sasuke had said them with such complete honesty.

Her expression softened.

“Okay.”

His fingers tightened gently around hers once before they began walking again, and Sakura followed after a second, strangely aware of every detail she normally would have ignored, from the warmth of his palm to the steady rhythm of his footsteps beside hers and the subtle pressure of his fingers whenever their hands swung between them.

Eventually she looked up at him and found Sasuke staring calmly ahead, apparently entirely unconcerned with the fact that he had managed to reduce Sakura Haruno to a blushing mess without even attempting to.

“You know,” she murmured, “you could have warned me.”

“About what?”

“About becoming affectionate.”

Sasuke turned his head slightly. “I'm not affectionate.”

Sakura laughed. “You're holding my hand.”

“Hm.”

“You're proving my point.”

His gaze returned to the road. “You're still talking.”

Sakura squeezed his hand affectionately. “You're still listening.”

There was the smallest pause before his thumb brushed once across her knuckles.

“Yeah.”

Sakura's smile softened as they continued walking, and she thought perhaps that would be the end of it, that maybe Sasuke had simply wanted to hold her hand on this particular evening and would return to his familiar quietness the following day, behaving as though nothing unusual had happened.

She should have known him better than that.

The following morning Sakura woke early and found him sitting at the edge of the bed, pulling on his shirt in preparation for a mission, and still half asleep she reached toward him and wrapped her fingers loosely around his wrist.

“Sasuke.”

He turned toward her. “Hm?”

“You're leaving?”

“Just for a few days.”

Sakura nodded sleepily and allowed her hand to fall away. “Okay.”

She had already started settling back into the pillow when Sasuke caught her hand before she could withdraw it completely, and Sakura opened her eyes to find him looking first at their hands and then at her.

“Come here.”

A tired smile appeared on her face. “You want a hug?”

Sasuke did not bother answering verbally, because instead he leaned down and wrapped an arm around her, drawing Sakura against him until she could bury her face comfortably against his chest.

“You're getting spoiled,” she murmured against him.

“Maybe.”

Her smile widened. “Have a safe trip.”

His hand moved slowly across her back. “I will.”

Sasuke remained there several seconds longer than necessary before finally pulling away, and Sakura watched quietly as he left the room, still feeling the warmth of his body against hers even after the door closed behind him.

When she fell back against the pillow, she was smiling so stupidly that she was grateful there was no one around to see it.

After that, Sasuke became strangely fond of touching her, although it was never dramatic enough for anyone outside their relationship to notice unless they knew him particularly well, because he remained Sasuke and certainly did not transform overnight into the kind of man who would cling openly to his girlfriend in public or constantly demand reassurance through physical affection. He still possessed the same quiet composure, still preferred silence to unnecessary conversation, and could still spend hours speaking only a handful of words, but somewhere along the way touching Sakura became something he did without thinking.

It began with small things, like resting his hand casually against her knee when they sat together or allowing his fingers to brush briefly over the back of her neck when he passed behind her, sometimes lingering there for a second before he continued walking, while at night, when Sakura was already drifting toward sleep, she would occasionally feel his fingers moving slowly through her hair until remaining awake became impossible.

If she was reading, Sasuke sometimes placed his hand over hers without even looking away from whatever he was doing, simply covering her fingers with his palm and leaving it there, and although Sakura had initially asked what exactly he thought he was doing whenever this happened, eventually she stopped because she had learned that Sasuke did not always possess explanations for habits his body had developed before his mind bothered to name them.

Sometimes he simply wanted to touch her, and apparently that was explanation enough.

What surprised Sakura most was how natural the habit gradually became, because she could move throughout the house and somehow Sasuke always ended up somewhere nearby, while if she sat down he would eventually appear beside her and if she stood up to retrieve something his eyes would follow her without him appearing to realize he was doing it.

Then there were the hugs, which changed as well.

Sasuke had never been someone Sakura would have described as a hugger, because in the beginning she had always been the person who wrapped her arms around him first, sometimes catching him off guard when he returned from a mission and other times simply hugging him because she wanted to, and while he had gradually learned to accept those embraces and eventually return them, Sakura never imagined he would become the kind of man who walked up behind her while she was preparing dinner and simply decided that he belonged there.

The first time it happened, she was standing at the stove carefully cutting vegetables while something simmered inside the pot in front of her, and although she heard Sasuke enter the kitchen she did not look up.

“You're home early.”

“Mm.”

“How was your—”

Before Sakura could finish asking the question, two arms slipped unexpectedly around her waist from behind, causing her entire body to freeze as she felt Sasuke settle against her back and rest his chin comfortably on her shoulder.

She nearly dropped the knife.

“Sasuke.”

“Hm?”

Sakura glanced sideways as far as she could manage. “What are you doing?”

“Nothing.”

“You're standing on me.”

“I know.”

“You are practically leaning your entire body weight against me.”

“You're fine.”

She stared at him with open disbelief. “I am trying to cook.”

“Then cook.”

Sakura turned her head a little farther, attempting to give him an appropriately incredulous look even though his cheek was practically pressed against hers.

“You're making that very difficult.”

“That sounds like your problem.”

“My problem?”

“Mm.”

Her eyes narrowed. “You're clingy.”

That finally earned a reaction, because Sasuke lifted his head just enough to give her the most unimpressed expression he could manage.

“I am not.”

“You are.”

“No.”

“You're literally attached to me.”

“No.”

“You are currently using me as furniture.”

Sasuke paused, and for a second Sakura expected another denial, but instead his arms tightened fractionally around her waist before he replied with complete calm.

“You're comfortable.”

Sakura's expression softened before she could stop it, because there was something about the quiet sincerity with which he said the words that made her chest ache unexpectedly.

He had not claimed he wanted to annoy her, had not told her he was tired or admitted that he had missed her, because apparently being comfortable against Sakura was enough of a reason for him to remain there, as though somewhere along the way she had become a place he instinctively associated with rest.

She looked down toward the hand resting over her stomach and smiled.

“You could have simply said you wanted a hug.”

“I did.”

“You didn't.”

“I came here.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“It is.”

Sakura laughed softly. “You're impossible.”

Sasuke lowered his head back onto her shoulder with the air of someone who considered the discussion successfully concluded.

“Keep cooking.”

She shook her head, unable to stop smiling. “Yes, sir.”

Cooking with Sasuke wrapped around her proved considerably more difficult than Sakura was willing to admit, but she returned her attention to the vegetables anyway, and for the next several minutes the kitchen filled with the quiet sounds of dinner being prepared, the gentle bubbling from the pot, the scrape of the knife over the cutting board, and the occasional clink of utensils against the counter while Sasuke remained exactly where he was.

He seemed entirely unconcerned by the fact that she could no longer move properly or that she repeatedly had to reach around his arm whenever she needed something, because he simply stood there with his arms around her waist and breathed quietly against her shoulder as though there was nowhere else in the world he needed to be.

Eventually Sakura smiled to herself and allowed her head to rest slightly against his.

“Are you planning on letting go anytime soon?”

“No.”

She laughed. “At least you're honest.”

“Mm.”

Sakura continued cooking while Sasuke remained behind her, and by the time dinner was finally ready he had still not moved away.

It was only gradually that Sakura began understanding that Sasuke did not merely enjoy touching her, because what he seemed to crave even more was simply being near her, and once she recognized the difference she began seeing evidence of it everywhere.

It was not always about holding hands or having his arms wrapped around her, because sometimes he did not touch her at all and seemed satisfied merely by occupying the same room, remaining close enough to hear her moving around and close enough to glance over and find her there whenever he felt the need.

He searched for her most obviously when he was tired, irritated, or returning from missions that had gone on longer than expected and required too many nights of sleeping somewhere that was not home, and often he did not even seem aware that he was doing it.

Sakura might be sitting on the couch completely absorbed in a book when Sasuke returned without making much noise, and she would hear the familiar sound of the door opening followed by the soft rustle of his cloak being removed and the quiet clink of his sword being set aside.

He would wash his hands and occasionally say something brief to announce that he had returned, although sometimes he said nothing at all, before inevitably coming to find her.

Sakura would hear his footsteps approaching and glance up from the page.

“Hey.”

He would answer with a quiet hum, which was usually all the greeting either of them required, and then he would sit beside her rather than across from her or at the opposite end of the couch, choosing a place close enough that their thighs touched and Sakura could feel the lingering warmth of him even through the layers of their clothes.

For several minutes he might remain that way in silence while Sakura continued reading, but gradually his shoulder would settle against hers, his breathing would slow, and the tension he had brought home from the mission would begin leaving his body.

Every once in a while, without any warning, he would simply lie down.

The first time Sasuke placed his head in Sakura's lap, she stared down at him for nearly ten seconds with her book forgotten completely in her hands, because he appeared to have decided without consultation that her lap was the most comfortable place available to him.

His eyes were closed, one arm rested loosely over his stomach, and the expression he wore was softer than anything Sakura normally saw immediately after a mission.

“Sasuke?”

“Mm.”

She hesitated. “Are you comfortable?”

“Yes.”

Sakura looked down at him. “You're lying on me.”

“I know.”

There was no embarrassment or hesitation in his voice, because he sounded as though Sakura had simply pointed out an obvious fact.

Unable to help herself, she smiled.

“Do you want a pillow?”

“No.”

“Water?”

“No.”

“Food?”

“No.”

Sakura tilted her head. “Then what do you want?”

His eyes remained closed, and for a moment she wondered whether he had already fallen asleep, but then his fingers moved slightly against the fabric of her clothes.

“You.”

Sakura's heart seemed to forget what it was supposed to do.

She stared at him. “What?”

His eyes opened just enough for him to look up at her.

“You.”

He said the word so simply that somehow it affected her more deeply, as though there was absolutely nothing unusual about the answer and after everything he had experienced and endured, the one thing Sasuke wanted at the end of the day was simply to return home and find Sakura waiting for him.

She swallowed.

“You have absolutely no idea what you're doing to me when you say things like that, do you?”

Sasuke's eyes narrowed faintly. “I said what I wanted.”

“Yes, I noticed.”

He closed his eyes again and, as though the conversation had already lasted longer than he considered necessary, reached upward and wrapped his fingers around her wrist, gently pulling her hand down until her fingertips rested against his hair.

“Stay.”

The word was quiet and almost sleepy, yet Sakura felt the request settle all the way through her.

Her expression softened as she looked down at him. “I wasn't going anywhere.”

“I know.”

Still, he did not release her wrist, and Sakura understood well enough not to point out the contradiction, because instead she placed her book aside and slowly began running her fingers through his hair.

The effect was immediate, his shoulders gradually loosening beneath her while the faint crease between his eyebrows disappeared and his breathing became slower and deeper, until the carefully guarded expression he wore so naturally faded enough to make him look younger and almost peaceful.

Sakura continued stroking his hair, occasionally letting her fingertips brush lightly across his temple while she watched him with a tenderness she could never have explained aloud, because there was something deeply intimate about being trusted enough to see the person who existed beneath all of Sasuke's control and restraint, the part of him that was simply exhausted and wanted somewhere safe enough to rest.

He had spent so much of his life learning how to survive without anyone holding him that perhaps he had never been given the opportunity to discover how much he actually enjoyed being held, how comforting it could feel to come home and know that another person was waiting, or how easy it could become to allow someone else to carry a little of the weight for a while.

He was learning that now, quietly and slowly, with her.

Sakura was more than willing to teach him that he never needed to ask twice, that he could reach for her whenever he wanted and sit beside her simply because he did not want to be alone, that he could return home exhausted and place his head in her lap without explaining himself, because sometimes he did not need to say anything at all and only needed to come closer.

Her fingers continued moving gently through his hair.

“Sleep,” she whispered.

Sasuke made a quiet sound of agreement, and within minutes his breathing had deepened enough for Sakura to know that he had obeyed her.

She looked down at him with a soft smile, already aware that he would probably deny everything if she ever brought it up, insisting that he was not clingy and did not need affection and merely happened to find Sakura comfortable, but she knew him too well to believe those excuses entirely.

Whenever Sasuke returned home tired, whenever he searched through the house until he found her, and whenever he quietly settled against her as though her presence finally convinced his body that it was safe enough to rest, Sakura understood what he could not always put into words.

He was never searching merely for a place to sit.

He was searching for her.And she would always be there.

She simply had not expected him to become quite so dependent on that closeness.

It happened so gradually and naturally that Sakura could not have said exactly when the change became significant, because there had been no single moment in which Sasuke suddenly turned affectionate and no obvious point she could identify as the beginning, but over time his need for proximity became so deeply woven into the ordinary rhythm of their lives that she did not understand how much he relied upon it until the first time she tried to move away.

It was late in the evening, and they had been sitting together on the couch after dinner while the house remained quiet around them, Sakura curled comfortably against Sasuke's side with one leg tucked beneath herself while his fingers moved absent-mindedly over hers, occasionally tracing the spaces between her fingers for no other apparent reason than because her hand happened to be available.

They had not spoken much for nearly twenty minutes, but neither of them needed to, because the silences they shared had long since stopped feeling awkward or empty, and Sakura could hear the faint ticking of the clock across the room, the occasional whisper of wind against the windows, and beneath all of it the slow, steady rhythm of Sasuke's breathing.

Both of them were tired and, for once, neither had anywhere else they needed to be, but the reports waiting unfinished on the desk continued nagging at the back of Sakura's mind until eventually she sighed and shifted slightly against him.

“I should probably go finish those reports.”

Sasuke's fingers tightened around hers immediately.

“Later.”

Sakura glanced up at him. “You've been saying that for the last hour.”

“Because you don't need to do them tonight.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No.”

A laugh escaped her. “You don't get to decide that.”

“I just did.”

“Sasuke.”

He finally looked toward her with an expression so perfectly serious that Sakura could not help smiling, because he appeared entirely convinced that this constituted a reasonable argument and that he had already won.

“You're impossible.”

Sasuke said nothing, so Sakura leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss against his cheek.

“I'll be back.”

She gently slipped her hand from his, and for a moment Sasuke did not move, his fingers remaining curled loosely around the empty space hers had occupied while his eyes dropped toward his hand.

Sakura had already taken several steps toward the desk when his voice stopped her.

“Don't.”

She turned around to find him still seated on the couch, and although his face remained composed enough that anyone else might have seen nothing unusual, Sakura recognized the tiny change in his expression immediately, the slight tension in his jaw and the quiet uncertainty beneath his gaze.

“What?”

Sasuke stood.

“Don't.”

She blinked. “Don't what?”

He crossed the room until he stood directly in front of her, close enough that Sakura could feel the warmth of his body, and then he gently wrapped his hand around her wrist.

“Move away.”

For several seconds Sakura simply stared at him, because there was something almost unbearably tender in how plainly he had said it, without pride or excuses or any attempt to hide what he wanted behind something practical.

He simply did not want her to leave.

Sakura's lips gradually curved into a smile. “Are you serious?”

“Yes.”

“You're actually stopping me from leaving because you want me to stay?”

“Yes.”

A warm laugh escaped her. “You've changed.”

Sasuke's gaze softened slightly. “I know.”

“You used to hate this.”

“I didn't hate it.”

Sakura raised an eyebrow. “You looked like you were being tortured every time I hugged you.”

“That was different.”

“How?”

Sasuke did not answer immediately, and while he searched for the words his thumb moved slowly across the inside of her wrist, almost absent-mindedly, until eventually his gaze lifted and met hers.

“I didn't know what to do with it.”

Sakura's smile softened. “With what?”

There was no guardedness left in his eyes when he answered.

“Being wanted.”

The words were simple enough that perhaps they should not have hurt, but Sakura felt something tighten deep inside her chest, an ache that was not exactly painful but strong enough to make her want to wrap her arms around him immediately.

She stepped closer.

“You know you're wanted now, right?”

His eyes lowered for a brief moment. “Yes.”

“Good.”

Before he could retreat into silence again, Sakura wrapped both arms around his waist and pulled herself against him, and Sasuke responded instantly, his arms closing around her with none of the hesitation he had once shown until there was barely any space left between their bodies.

He held her firmly, almost desperately, as though some part of him had been waiting for permission to do exactly that.

Sakura rested her cheek against his chest and listened to his heartbeat.

“You're really clingy now,” she murmured.

“Don't start.”

She laughed. “You are.”

“I said don't start.”

“Okay.”

Still smiling, Sakura relaxed completely against him, and for a while neither of them said anything while his arms remained securely around her.

Then hers tightened slightly around his waist.

“I like it.”

Sasuke's embrace became fractionally stronger.

“Good.”

There was something so quietly satisfied in the way he answered that Sakura could not help smiling as she lifted her head enough to look at him.

“So that's it?”

“What?”

“You've finally admitted you like being held.”

“I didn't admit anything.”

“You literally told me not to move away.”

“I wanted you to stay.”

“That's practically the same thing.”

“No.”

Sakura laughed softly. “Fine. Whatever you say.”

Sasuke looked down at her as his expression gradually returned to its usual calm, but his arms never loosened, and Sakura stopped teasing him because there was nothing else she needed from the moment except to remain exactly where he had asked her to stay.

As she rested against him, she realized that perhaps this was what dependence on affection looked like for someone like Sasuke, because it did not mean needing another person every second or becoming incapable of standing alone, but rather finally learning what it felt like to have somewhere safe enough to return to and becoming brave enough to admit that he did not want to leave it.

So Sakura stayed, and Sasuke held her, while for a little while longer neither of them remembered the unfinished reports waiting across the room.

After that, Sakura began noticing just how often Sasuke reached for her, because once she had become aware of the habit it became almost impossible not to see.

If they were lying in bed, he preferred her close enough that some part of their bodies was always touching, sometimes with nothing more than his hand resting loosely against her waist while other nights he pulled her completely against his chest and fell asleep with his face buried somewhere in her hair, and whenever they sat together his fingers inevitably found hers in the same absent-minded way, as though he had developed the habit long before he consciously recognized it.

If Sakura got out of bed during the night, even for something as simple as drinking a glass of water, she would occasionally return to find Sasuke awake.

He never called after her and never came looking, but simply remained lying there in the darkness, slightly propped against the pillow with his gaze fixed toward the doorway as though he had been waiting for her to return.

The first time Sakura caught him doing it, she stopped in the doorway.

“You weren't asleep?”

“No.”

His voice was quiet and still rough with sleep.

Sakura studied him for a moment. “Why?”

Sasuke did not answer immediately, but his gaze shifted toward the empty space beside him, which told Sakura almost everything before he finally spoke.

“You weren't here.”

Something inside Sakura softened instantly as she closed the door behind herself and walked toward the bed.

“You were waiting for me?”

He looked at her as though the question were unnecessary. “You took too long.”

A smile appeared on Sakura's face. “I was gone for two minutes.”

“I know.”

“And you were awake the entire time?”

“Yes.”

Sakura climbed back into bed, trying unsuccessfully not to smile too much as she settled beneath the blankets.

“I'm here now.”

Sasuke said nothing, because instead he simply reached for her, slipping an arm around her waist and pulling her close with such familiar ease that Sakura barely had time to settle before she found herself tucked securely against his chest with her back resting along the length of him.

She smiled into the darkness. “Better?”

“Yes.”

Turning her head slightly, Sakura pressed a soft kiss against his jaw.

“You know you can sleep without me, right?”

“I know.”

“You don't have to wait for me.”

“Hm.”

“But you still do.”

“Hm.”

There was no hesitation in his answer, and Sakura smiled as she shifted within his arms until she could see his face.

“Why?”

For several seconds Sasuke simply looked at her, his expression sleepy and unguarded in a way it rarely was during the day, while his hand remained settled against her back and his thumb moved lazily over the fabric of her nightclothes.

Then he answered.

“Because I sleep better when you're here.”

Sakura became still.

It was such a simple confession, without grandeur or carefully chosen language, merely the truth offered quietly in the darkness because here, in the privacy of their bedroom, Sasuke had no reason to hide it.

Her eyes softened, because there were moments when he said things so simply that they reached her far more deeply than any elaborate declaration could have.

He did not tell her that he could not live without her, because he did not need to.

He simply told her that sleep came easier whenever she was beside him, and somehow that felt more intimate than almost anything else he could have said.

Sakura moved closer, fitting herself into the space between his arms until no distance remained between them.

“Then I'll stay.”

His hand settled more firmly against her back.

“Good.”

She smiled. “You really like having me around, don't you?”

Sasuke remained silent for a moment before his answer came so quietly that she almost felt it more than heard it.

“Yes.”

Sakura's heart gave a helpless little flutter as she closed her eyes and rested her forehead against his chest.

Outside, the village remained completely quiet except for the occasional sound of wind moving through the trees, while inside the bedroom everything felt warm, still, and safe, and Sasuke's breathing gradually began to slow again as the weight of his body relaxed behind her.

His fingers remained gently curled into the fabric at her back, because even in sleep he did not seem entirely willing to let go, and eventually that became another one of their routines, something neither had planned or formally discussed but which simply happened until it became part of them.

Sasuke would return home and look for Sakura, sit beside her, reach for her hand, and pull her closer at night without even fully waking, and whenever she disappeared from his side for too long she would eventually return to find him waiting, sometimes fully awake and sometimes only half-conscious but always reaching for her the moment she came back.

Sakura rarely teased him about it beyond the occasional remark intended to earn one of his irritated looks, but secretly she loved every bit of it because she understood what it meant for someone who had spent so much of his life teaching himself not to need anyone to finally allow himself to need warmth, familiarity, and the quiet rhythm of another person's breathing beside him.

Perhaps the most romantic part was not that Sasuke needed her at all, but that he trusted her enough to let her know.

Later that night, when his arm tightened around her instinctively in his sleep, Sakura smiled into the darkness and placed her hand over his.

“I'm here,” she whispered.

Sasuke did not answer because he did not need to, and instead his fingers intertwined with hers until Sakura closed her eyes and eventually fell asleep still smiling.

Sasuke never announced that he had become affectionate, nor did he sit down one day and confess that somewhere along the way he had grown accustomed to having Sakura within reach or that her presence had become woven so deeply into the rhythm of his everyday life that he noticed whenever she was not there.

He simply started doing things.

He would return from a mission, find Sakura in the kitchen, and without offering much of a greeting walk directly up behind her and wrap his arms around her waist, sometimes resting his forehead against her shoulder while she continued whatever she was doing as though having an entire Uchiha attached to her back were simply another ordinary feature of domestic life.

Eventually Sakura learned not to question it too much.

“You're blocking the drawer.”

“Open another one.”

“There isn't another one.”

“Then you don't need it.”

Sakura would turn her head just enough to give him an incredulous look.

“You're impossible.”

“Mm.”

And Sasuke would stay.

If she sat down, he sat beside her, and if she moved toward the opposite end of the couch he somehow ended up there as well, while if Sakura lay down to rest he would eventually settle beside her with one arm finding its way around her as naturally as though it had always belonged there.

Whenever she fell asleep on the couch, she would later wake in bed beneath the blankets with Sasuke's arm securely around her waist, never remembering him carrying her there and only knowing that somehow she had fallen asleep alone and awakened pressed closely against him.

Sometimes, early in the morning, Sakura would try to get out of bed before he was fully awake only to feel his arm tighten around her middle.

“Five more minutes.”

She would smile despite herself. “You said that twenty minutes ago.”

“Then five more.”

“Sasuke.”

He would pull her back against his chest and bury his face somewhere near her shoulder with the quiet stubbornness of a man who had evidently decided that morning could wait.

“Stay.”

And more often than not, Sakura did.

Because somewhere along the way the boy who had once gone completely still whenever she touched him had become a man who quietly relied upon that closeness, not because he was weak and certainly not because he could not endure solitude, since Sasuke had spent most of his life proving he was exceptionally capable of doing exactly that, but because he had finally discovered something better than knowing how to survive loneliness.

He had found somewhere he did not have to endure it at all.

*He had found Sakura.*

Sometimes she wondered whether Sasuke understood exactly how much he had changed, and while she suspected he knew at least a little, she did not realize how much until one rainy evening when the village had fallen quiet beneath the steady sound of water against the windows.

They were lying together in bed, the room almost completely dark except for the faint gray light filtering through the curtains, and Sakura had already begun drifting toward sleep while curled comfortably against him beneath the blankets when she felt Sasuke's hand move slowly across her waist.

Her eyes opened slightly.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Sakura smiled sleepily. “You're touching me.”

“I know.”

“You always say ‘nothing’ while you're very obviously doing something.”

Sasuke remained quiet long enough that Sakura assumed he would simply ignore her, but instead his fingers curled gently into the fabric of her shirt and held her a little more securely.

“I like this.”

Sakura blinked. “This?”

His gaze remained fixed on her.

“You.”

Her heart gave that familiar helpless flutter as Sakura shifted in his arms until she was facing him directly.

Sasuke was already watching her, and the darkness softened the usual sharpness of his features enough to make him seem quieter and somehow more vulnerable, while none of the guardedness he wore so naturally remained in his eyes.

“I like knowing you're here,” he said.

Sakura smiled. “You've become very honest.”

“Don't make me regret it.”

A quiet laugh escaped her. “I won't.”

Sasuke lifted one hand and brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face, but rather than withdrawing afterward his fingertips lingered against her cheek with a tenderness that still occasionally surprised her.

“I used to think I didn't need this.”

Sakura's expression softened. “Touch?”

He shook his head faintly.

“Closeness.”

She covered his hand with hers. “And now?”

For several long seconds Sasuke simply looked at her before his gaze dropped toward their hands.

“Now I notice when it's gone.”

Something tightened gently inside Sakura's chest.

“Sasuke…”

“When you're away, I notice.”

His thumb moved slowly against her cheek.

“When you don't hold my hand, I notice.”

He paused for a moment before continuing.

“When you sleep farther away from me, I notice.”

Sakura's eyes softened even more. “You're hopeless.”

“Probably.”

She smiled before leaning forward and kissing him softly, the kiss gentle and unhurried and familiar enough that it needed to prove absolutely nothing because they had already spent years learning every meaning the other could communicate without words.

When Sakura eventually pulled away, Sasuke followed her almost unconsciously, his arm slipping around her waist and drawing her back toward him before he seemed to realize what he was doing.

She laughed softly.

“See?”

Sasuke gave her a questioning look.

“Clingy.”

“Quiet.”

“You're literally pulling me back.”

“I know.”

Still smiling, Sakura settled against his chest once more and allowed her head to rest beneath his chin while for several minutes they did nothing but listen to the rain.

Eventually Sakura spoke in a whisper.

“I'm not going anywhere.”

Sasuke's arms tightened around her.

“I know.”

This time Sakura understood what existed beneath the simple answer, because he was not saying it because he doubted her love or believed she intended to leave him, but because there had once been a time in his life when every person he loved had been taken from him, and some wounds did not simply vanish because enough years had passed.

He needed reassurance, not because Sakura had given him any reason to question her but because part of him had learned painfully early that loving someone did not guarantee they would remain.

So Sakura lifted her head and pressed a soft kiss against his chest before whispering the words she knew some part of him would always need to hear.

“I'm here.”

Sasuke closed his eyes and rested his hand gently over her heart, remaining silent for a long moment while he felt the steady rhythm beating beneath his palm, the warmth of her body, the softness of her breathing, and the quiet certainty of her presence.
For once there was nothing he needed to say. He simply held her a little closer because she was there and because she had stayed, and after a lifetime spent learning how to live without anyone, Sasuke had finally found the one person he never wanted to learn how to live without.
