Just a bad feeling

Summary:

Matt didn´t know what to do. He’d just learn that the client and most recent employee he just hired was friends with an agent from the FBI.

Or me dumping my idea of karen and dex being friends and re-thinking what would happen after the first episode or so just for fun.

Notes:

Hi, this fanfic I wrote only for the benefit of my friend, Blom, who wanted her fanfic to be in an even number when you search “Dexmatt”.

I'm not continuing this ever. Sorry for making you read this that I wrote in 4 minutes

Work Text:

Matt just wanted to help those in need, those who were innocent, that’s all he did. He’d help Karen with the investigation and legal troubles so she could try and have a normal life, a happy life. Then, he’d employ her with his associate, and best friend, Foggy, since she was a great asset to the team and they were in desperate need for help. But now there he was in front of an FBI agent while he offered them a check to thank them sincerely. Matt felt something off about him, something that was not quite right and began to rethink his decision, but Foggy didn’t. He offered the agent a smile like he always did- bigger than usual because of that little reward in the man’s hand-.

-Oh!, and, by the way, what may we call you, Agent..?- Asked Foggy, raising an eyebrow while not losing his charismatic smile.

-Benjamin. I’m agent Benjamin Poindexter, but you are Karen’s friends, so you can just call me Dex.

-Well, we aren’t “friends” yet, we are just coworkers for now- Karen added a bit embarrassed.

Foggy made an offended gesture and said something about how she’d offended him with a dramatic tone and Karen would laugh and tell him that was not what she meant, but Matt wasn’t paying attention. He was staring at Dex- well, not truly staring, but paying attention to him. He’d caught his attention, but he still wasn’t sure why. Matt would interrupt the conversation just to confirm something about a question that began to bother him.

-And, Dex, why exactly didn’t you help Karen?

Dex seemed confused. -Excuse me?- It was obvious the question was unexpected for him, but it also brought up some internal conflict. Karen and Foggy stayed quiet, noticing how the air had changed, turning into something almost uncomfortable. -Are you asking me why I obeyed the law, or..?

Matt faked a laugh.-No, of course not. I assume, as an FBI agent, you know what your limits are in these matters. I was just wondering why, as her friend, you didn’t help her by, I don’t know, paying for her lawyer.

Dex stayed silent, as if he couldn’t believe how perceptive he was or maybe he was just making up an excuse. -It’s nothing against Karen. I want to look after her whenever I can, after all. But she’s an independent woman and I was caught up with work to do. That’s why I came to thank you, both.

Foggy interrupted.-And you are completely welcome! We are so glad you were satisfied with our service. We are, as you can see, a small firm, so any help is cherished.- He had that salesman tone with that smile of his that just made it impossible for one to stay angry, even when both the other men were having some sort of suspiciously “staring” contest.

-...Right.- Dex finally said. He’d sigh.-This was a lovely chat, but I have to get to work now. ‘Can’t be late.- He smirked. Foggy shook hands with him and he gave Karen a hug before he turned to Matt, who was holding his stick with both hands on top of it. -I’ll probably see you soon, all of you.

Matt just smiled, and so did Foggy and Karen, but his smile felt forced. Dex got out of their little office, and then the day would go on as normal. But it wasn’t, not anymore. And it was all because Matt couldn’t get him out of his head. And now it was driving him crazy.
