"Stupider people than us have done this."
"Thanks, La'an, that's very reassuring."
She giggles. She's not really a giggler, but she giggles.
Jim looks over and raises an eyebrow. She shrugs.
He hasn't said anything, not directly, but he keeps looking at them both with this anticipatory expression. He was the obvious person to ask for help getting Spock a new chess set - he's the best player she knows besides Spock himself - but maybe she had ulterior motives she didn't let herself think about.
"Okay, so what do we think?"
She looks at the specs on the screen and can't quite stop herself from leaning into Jim's space. "Will Spock like it?"
Jim chuckles softly. "I think he'll enjoy whatever you care to give him," he murmurs, and she didn't realise just how close she was till she felt his breath on her ear. "I'm sure you know exactly what he'll like."
Is it La'an's imagination that imbues those words with all sorts of filthy meanings? When she turns, Jim's watching her, eyes dark.
"I guess we'll find out when he gets back, won't we?"
Jim smiles slowly. "Yeah?"
"If you're sticking around."
"I wouldn't miss it for the world."
