Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team Appoints Sophia Wolff as Chief Communications Officer
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team is pleased to announce the appointment of Sophia Wolff as Chief Communications Officer, effective immediately. Sophia will oversee all external and internal communications, global media strategy, brand alignment, and partner messaging across the team’s racing and corporate platforms.
Sophia joins the team with an impressive background in motorsport communications. A graduate of the London School of Economics with a Master in Media and Communications, she began her career in Formula One with Williams Racing, where she held multiple roles across press operations, media management, and digital strategy.
Her appointment follows a highly competitive recruitment process in which Sophia emerged as the leading candidate based on her strategic insight, communications expertise, and strong leadership potential. She will report directly to the Team Principal & CEO, Toto Wolff.

No suspension, enormous vibration and lateral loading, and you're sitting incredibly low with forces going directly through the body. And Sophia's case was apparently severe enough that she ultimately needed major spinal fusion surgery.

Interviewer: Laura Winter
Guest: Toto Wolff
Laura Winter: Toto, Mercedes has always had a reputation for being something of a family, but in your case, that’s quite literal. What’s it like working with your daughter, Sophia, now that she’s Chief Communications Officer?
Toto Wolff: (smiling softly) It’s very special. Surreal at times, too. I never expected any of my children to know exactly what they wanted to do with their lives early on. Most people need time. I certainly did. But Sophia? She’s always been incredibly focused.
She knew from the start that she wanted to work in motorsport communications. She graduated top of her class from boarding school, went straight into LSE, Bachelor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and then a Master in Media and Communications, and while she was still studying, she was already applying to teams. Williams gave her a shot—internship, then full-time—she rose quickly. And she never once asked for my help.
Laura: That sounds like her.
Toto: (laughs) Very much. And when she applied to Mercedes… I had no idea. She didn’t tell me. Not a word.
Laura: Really?
Toto: Not even a hint. It wasn’t until she was shortlisted for the CCO role that someone from HR mentioned her name in a meeting, and I nearly dropped my pen. I said, “Sophia Wolff? My Sophia?” And they just said, “Yes. She’s the best fit for us.”
Laura: And you had no idea she was applying?
Toto: (smiling ruefully) None. Though—and this is the part that still makes me laugh—Susie knew. Sophia told her. They conspired, apparently. Susie kept it from me on purpose.
Laura: (laughing) Of course she did.
Toto: She said, “I didn’t want you overthinking it. She wanted to be considered like everyone else.” And she was. Objectively. The team didn’t just approve her—they fought for her.
I actually hesitated. Not because I didn’t believe in her, but because I didn’t want anyone to think we were hiring her because of her name. And then someone on the leadership team looked at me and said, “If she weren’t your daughter, we would have hired her yesterday.”
That settled it.
Laura: Did anyone on the team know her before?
Toto: (smiling now) Yes. When we officially brought her in, George was very excited. They worked together at Williams—he’d seen firsthand how capable she is. I think he was actually relieved to know someone so sharp would be managing the communications department here. I remember him saying, “Oh good, someone finally knows how to write a driver quote that doesn’t sound like a press robot.” (laughs)
Laura: That’s brilliant. Sounds like she fit in right away.
Toto: Immediately. She’s brilliant at what she does—strategic, calm under pressure, fierce when she needs to be. She manages crises before they even reach me. Honestly, she keeps this team in line more than I do.
Laura: You seem very proud.
Toto: (quietly, without hesitation) I am. Beyond words. She earned every bit of it. And I’ve learned—sometimes the best thing you can do as a father is step back, and let your daughter prove she doesn’t need you to open the door. She’ll build one herself.
