Before It All

Summary:

FFXIV Write 2026- #29: Layer

N'yami says farewell but not goodbye to a friend.

Work Text:

The floating city of Nym was one of her favourite locations. It was vast- much more so now than before the Calamity. More islands had begun to float in multiple different layers and positions, and the appearance of the Wanderer's Palace was a focus of her studies for at least a year or two since the disaster that had unfolded.

It was coming into evening now, the deep blue skies stretching all the way to the end of the island of Vylbrand and beyond. Sat with her feet dangling over the edge, she smiled and watched the birds fly as she pulled her tome out from her satchel. Pulling a quill free, she sketched something in the distance before noting down what exactly she had seen and when.

The pages of her book had swelled in the recent years. Snippets of things she had seen, leaves, rubbings, accounts from people, sketches, all manner of records. It was soon time to leave Eorzea behind for the rich shores of knowledge that were Old Sharlayan as her scholarship had finally been approved. Her mother would be so proud, if she were still here.

"Yami?" came a voice from behind her.

Her ears twitched and she smiled, turning to face it. "The one and the same!" Standing up carefully, she stretched and pocketed her book. "Come to see me off?"

Caelus smiled, his raven hair shimmering slightly in the early evening moonlight. "How could I not? I'll miss you, you know." He pulled her into a tight hug and smiled, "Can't believe you are going to be an archon!"

She brushed her pink hair over her shoulder and dusted his sleeves down. "Who else is going to make sure you're presentable? Whatever would people think, getting a lecture like this from someone almost 6 years your junior?" she tutted slightly and shook her head.

Caelus laughed and took her by the hand. "Come on. Everyone's waiting at Aleport for you. The ship from Limsa leaves in a few hours, and don't want you to be late!"

It was exactly what she had wished for. Soon, beloved Eorzea, soon, she thought to herself, I will be home again.
