Updates to "No Fandom" Additional Tags, April 2025

Spotlight on Tag Wrangling

AO3 Tag Wranglers continue to test processes for wrangling canonical additional tags (tags that appear in the auto-complete) which don't belong to any particular fandom (also known as "No Fandom" tags). This post will provide an overview of some of these upcoming changes.

Previous Tag Wrangling updates can generally be found the @ao3org Tumblr. While we plan to announce No Fandom tag updates on AO3 News going forward, this may not be true of all wrangling updates. It's likely some updates may remain solely distributed via the @ao3org Tumblr, especially those that only affect one or two fandoms. The way we distribute updates is subject to change as we work through this new process.

These discussions were the result of internal follow-up discussions related to January's updates. They involve creating new canonical No Fandom additional tags or updating the format of older canonical tags, but none of these updates will change the tags users have added to works. If a user-created tag is considered to have the same meaning as a new canonical, it will be made a synonym of the canonical tag, and works with that user-created tag will appear when the canonical tag is selected.

In short, these changes only affect which tags appear in AO3's auto-complete and filters. You can and should continue to tag your works with any version of these tags you prefer to use.

Reader and Reader-Insert-related Canonicals

During this round of updates, we tested a discussion method which permitted many related canonicals to be canonized at once, instead of each canonical having its own separate discussion period. This allowed us to canonize over 200 additional tags from one discussion.

Consequently, we've canonized many additional tags related to Reader-Insert. All Reader-Insert modifier tags will be subtags of Reader-Insert. The full list is available via tag search.

Pregnancy-related Canonicals

As mentioned in the last update, we will create a canonical for Trans Mpreg | Trans Male Pregnancy. We will also create a new canonical for Past Trans Mpreg | Trans Male Pregnancy, which will be made a subtag of Trans Mpreg | Trans Male Pregnancy.

To improve clarity, we will also be decanonizing the current canonical Fpreg and canonizing two new tags: Female Pregnancy and Fpreg | Female/Female Pregnancy. Tags which are currently synonyms of Fpreg will be made synonyms of Female Pregnancy or Fpreg | Female/Female Pregnancy as appropriate.

Lastly, we will be making 3 new canonical tags related to pregnancy in Omegaverse settings:

Omegaverse Omega Pregnancy
Omegaverse Alpha Pregnancy
Omegaverse Beta Pregnancy

In Conclusion

These are just some of the changes we are making to No Fandom canonical additional tags. Some of these changes have already been implemented, while others are currently underway. Creating and renaming tags requires a lot of work from wranglers to implement, so large changes will likely take some time to complete after this post has been published.

While we won't be announcing every change we make to No Fandom canonical tags, you can expect similar updates in the future on the tags we believe will most affect users. it's awesome to see tag updates but i went to look at the reader insert ones and can't go past this one

You/Your Pronouns for Reader-Insert

Tags with the same meaning: Reader is referred to as "You", Reader is You, you/your pronouns for reader

ah yes, the possible genders: he, she, they and "you"
i'm pretty sure it's supposed to mean second person pov but this tag isn't synced to second person in any way, that's so weird

  Thank you for your feedback! Tag wranglers often take into account what wording is used more frequently by users when making new canonical tags. Since more users currently tag for this concept using phrases like "reader is called you" and "you/your pronouns for reader", we've chosen to canonize the tag in this format.
  If phrasing such as "Second Person POV for Reader-Insert" gains more traction in the future or if we see distinct changes in usage trends, we may choose to rename the canonical at that time or add "Second Person POV" as a metatag for "You/Your Pronouns for Reader-Insert".

    ......are you assuming people are doing you/your third person pronouns there then?? of course it's not getting tagged as "second person pov for reader", those who know that's called second person tag it with separate tags for second person pov and reader because the reader's point of view is already assumed in reader inserts. you also have a bunch of tags like "you perspective", "you pov" and "you pronouns" and even a "second person pov, no y/n" (which is clearly a reader insert tag) synned to second person pov. it would make sense to at the very least make it a metatag here too (probably together with reader pov)

      I'd like to chime in here: "you" and "your" *are* pronouns. Other pronouns include "I" and "me" and "we" and "anyone." I know a lot of us say the word "pronouns" to specifically communicate "How I want other people to refer to me when they are not using my name," but you/your are pronouns, too, even if they're not Third Person pronouns.
      I don't have tons of experience with Reader fics, but I've definitely see Second Person POV for fics that are definitely *not* Reader fics; sometimes the "you" is a very specific canon character, and the Second Person POV closes the psychic distance and forces an intimacy with a reader. I wouldn't suggest synning Second Person POV with You/Your Pronouns for Reader-Inserts; I think the archive would accidentally catch a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with Reader-Inserts.

        i'm not debating they are pronouns, i'm pointing out that the "x's pronouns are a/b" formula specifically is typically used to communicate what pronouns someone is referred to in third person, so it's confusing to see "you" there
        i also wasn't suggesting that second person pov becomes a synonym of the reader insert tag, but vice versa, with second person pov being the primary/meta tag, especially since some "reader is you" type tags have already been made its synonyms
        (and i assumed it was an appropriate place to do that because i already got one reply from a tag wranglers official account)

        I think the issue here is that if, say, the POV reader-insert character hears someone else talking about them but isn't being directly talked to, those characters will use third person pronouns.
        For example:
        Alice says to you, "I like your shirt."
        She turns to Bob and asks him, "hey Bob, do you like their shirt?"
        In that case, the reader's pronouns are actually they/them, not you/your. That distinction can be important, especially in fics where the author wants to assign the reader-insert a specific gender. (Which I imagine comes up a lot when reproductive organs are involved.)

    I do think there's a distinction between using second person in general, and using it for the reader specifically. One of my most well-received completed fics has three viewpoints, all using Second Person, but each distinctly from the POV of a canonical major character. This is qualitatively different from a Second-Person character written with vague details so that nothing clashes with the reader's personal details.
    I don't really have a tag preference, as I never read or write reader-insert fics; just throwing that out there.
    
    Still would like to be able to narrow my searches as easily as "no crossovers" but for (1) reader-insert, (2) Ships with Original Characters, and (3) maximum number of tags. This would immediately improve many of my searches. On some searches I wind up adding more and more tag restrictions that are all variations of "no I don't want to be reading about my favorite characters in a relationship with a character you just made up". dl;dr obviously, but it's annoying that it's not easier to categorically drop an entire set of tags that could show up in any number of formats.
    (Particularly a problem in Baldur's Gate fandom, but that's because it's based on a game where the main character is user-defined, and there's no easy way to say "only this Ship" or "no Ships at all, please, but do up the intensity; I'm not here to read gen fluff.")

      Many of the things you've mentioned here would be feasible using the "Search within results" field of the filter by searching for things like "-Reader AND -"/Original Character" and "otp:true". We recommend you check out the Hidden Search Operators Cheatsheet. In terms of limiting the number of tags you see, you may want to take a look at this unofficial guide to Ways to Avoid Seeing Fics with a Wall of Tags for suggestions to help you tailor your searches.

      pretty much all reader inserts make a bunch of assumptions about the reader character, it's kinda necessary in order to make any story where said character is able to at least perceive things. reader inserts are a subtype of original characters. if nothing clashes when you read a reader insert fanfic, congrats, the author managed to create a character that you can relate to, you should probably befriend them about it
      anyway my point in my original comment was that second person pov in a reader-insert is still second person pov and not some completely unrelated phenomenon. someone looking for a second person pov reader insert fic would want the "you/your pronouns" ones to be included in their "second person pov"+"reader" search, and to someone who excludes reader fics from their searches a change in tag categorization wouldn't make a difference

One thing I noticed regarding Reader Inserts is that a lot of stories just have the Relationship tag "{Character}/Reader", is there a way to use the "Reader-Insert" tag to filter on those?

      It should work in the tags to include/exclude, are you typing */reader exactly?
      This works for other tags like */[character] if you want to test it out with a different tag.
      for example here is the naruto fandom tag with x reader excluded
      and here is the naruto fandom tag with x reader excluded, but i try to include a kakashi/reader tag.
      Because of the */reader tag being excluded, it cant pull up any kakashi/reader fics. Im not sure why its not working for you, but please let me know if this helps any.

        The problem only seems to be apparent when using the include function. If I use the */[character] whether it's */reader, */harry potter, etc, then it doesn't seem to work properly. I'm getting any mention of the character in the tags at all, whether it is a relationship tag using & or just the character tag. Could it be because I'm on mobile?

        Ahhhh i see what you mean now. Yes the issue is that it'll catch every tag that contains whatever follows the asterisk. I tested it with */you and it would catch tags like This is not going where you think and other tags like it. I'm not sure if theres any good method to include it the way we're trying to. There is also no real difference in mobile or desktop that i can tell, Ive tried on both.
        Im going to guess the best way to do what youre looking for is to include m/m or m/f and add in the search within results summary:[character] and find it parings that way. Sorry i couldnt be more help.

    This doesn't actually work, tragically
    You can see if you go to a tag like Omniscient Reader (Fandom) where all works will inevitably have a "reader" in the tags it just ignores the slash, it's the same result as just typing "reader" into the Exclude box (all lowercase is important here, because if you type Reader you're getting the canon tag, you can get the same result by typing "-tag:reader" into the Search within results box -- the search within box also ignores the slash and ampersand symbols 😭😭😭)
    It excludes less things than just -reader does because then it's just looking at the tags and not title/summary/notes as that usually does, so it feels like it works, but if someone were to freeform tag "reader discretion advised" or something with "beta reader" it will still get those excluded
    ... I guess a suggested solution could be to create a hidden search operator to be like -relationship_tag:reader"??? but that's not a thing that exists

      There is also the tedious but effective method of adding every [character]/reader tag for what you like reading into your skin and excluding it through there, guide here, but its still not the same as a quick and easy button. (You could theoretically use the guide to highlight every pairing with character/reader but I havent tried.) There might be a way to play around with coding but its a tough issue.

        I made a spreadsheet to generate the code for highlighting tags a couple years ago, used to pass it around to friends and then just. made a tumblr sideblog for it. Makes it a bit easier for people who do not want to get into the coding of things? Even if I completely forgot to go and update to the version with "not()" selectors - I did not want to explain not selectors and procrastinated too much.
        I'm not a fan of outright hiding stuff, so I didn't bother with that AND the "has:" selector does not play nice with firefox (the guide you linked mentions being able to make it work, but testing by me and two friends gave varied results both on mobile and desktop) lmao
        I did actually start muting any and all users who posted a reader fic with no [reader or reader-insert] tag in a particular fandom and it's actually the only reason I mute people and it's close to 200 people muted by now and it kind of sucks because most of them have just the one fic? So it's not like it's getting me that much future-benefit, but it is an easy button to solve the in-the-moment problem and it somehow sidesteps that my brain doesn't like to permanently hide things with a particular tag 😂
        Honestly, though, there are many, many methods to not-see reader fics that are in your search results page (userscripts like blurbblocker and ao3 savior?) it's really not the same as something that will exclude a work and not leave me with five visible fics when there should be 20.
        (on the subject of cool userscripts tho, bc I linked it to a friend yesterday, look at this one that hides anything that isn't the primary pairing automatically! I've had Neeve's version installed for a while but I rarely use it because it's a bit of work to set up and I can't usually be bothered, but it's cool that now someone made an automatic version!)

  The tag system doesn't allow wranglers to tie different types of tags together like that — tag wranglers can't make relationship tags be filtered based on character or additional tags. If you would like to suggest this feature (or any other new feature), you can send it in to the Support committee, who are responsible for receiving feature requests and suggestions.

Supporting the commenter above, is there a way to filter all Character x Reader fanfics at once? Sometimes I have to put several tags in the filter to remove them and this ends up making my ao3 slow or even crash.

  You can catch all the Character x reader fics by filtering out */reader. The asterisk makes it filter for any and all characters

        when i'm stuck with writing things i haven't experienced, i often look up stories of people who have experienced it, so i can make it more realistic. maybe you could do this as well, but then instead of making it more realistic, you could use those stories as inspiration and line of how dramatic you want it?

What is the rationale behind trans male pregnancy being a subcategory of mpreg and not a separate tag? Cis mpreg is generally a fantasy kink while trans male pregnancy is an actual thing that happens to actual people. Why can I not filter mpreg while still being able to see trans male pregnancy?

  Thank you for your questions. We’re not quite sure what you’re asking, but we’ve elaborated a bit on how you can filter with these two tags, which hopefully may help.
  Because trans men are men, we’ve made "Trans Mpreg | Trans Male Pregnancy" a subtag of "Mpreg | Male Pregnancy." If you want to find works only related to Trans Mpreg, you can filter for works on the "Trans Mpreg | Trans Male Pregnancy" tag directly. If you want to find Mpreg works without finding Trans Mpreg works, you can filter on the "Mpreg | Male Pregnancy" tag directly while excluding Trans Mpreg.

    You cannot, however, filter out Mpreg | Male Pregnancy from Trans Mpreg | Trans Male Pregnancy, due to the metatag-subtag relationship; which I believe is what the op wishes were possible, since most of the uses of the metatag alone are presumedly cis men centric.
    Perhaps adding an additional subtag, Cis Mpreg | Cis Male Pregnancy, parallel to the trans specific subtag, could help mitigate this?

      During discussions regarding the creation of these canonicals it was decided that we would not be creating a canonical for Cis Mpreg at this time.
      If it's helpful to know, at the present time Trans Mpreg | Trans Male Pregnancy has not been cross-tagged on works about Cis Mpreg so excluding the metatag to see the usage you're looking for is unnecessary. If you wish to see works exclusively for Trans Mpreg | Male Pregnancy only, you can do so by browsing the works on the tag without having to exclude anything. If this changes in the future, the committee will reevaluate.

      We're not sure we fully understand your question, but if you'd like to see works tagged with Trans Mpreg | Trans Male Pregnancy you can filter on it directly and do not need to filter out the metatag to do that.

I'm just curious about the female pregnancy tags.
So does "Fpreg" (a term I'd never heard before now) specifically refer to a pregnancy involving a female/female couple?
(Does it matter how the pregnancy came about on a technical level, or is it still applicable regardless of the genetics of the fetus? In other words, does "Fpreg" refer to the relationship status of the parent(s), or the genetics of the fetus, or both, or either??)
If that's the case, I can see why there would have been confusion and why it would be helpful to clarify the tag.
And then is "Female Pregnancy" a much more generic tag referring to a typical pregnancy of a female character regardless of her relationship status, to distinguish it from the much more specific "Fpreg" trope above?
Just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly!

  Thank you for the question! “Fpreg” historically has referred to a pregnancy involving a female/female couple, which you can find more information about on the Fempreg Fanlore page. However, the “Fpreg” tag has been tagged for by users to mean both “a female character is pregnant” and “pregnancy from a female/female couple.”
  These are two related, but different concepts, and users may want to filter for one of them while excluding the other. As such, we split the former canonical “Fpreg” into the two separate tags, to make it easier for users to find and tag their works based on the tag that best describes their work. The intention in having both is to allow “Female Pregnancy” to function as a more generic tag that refers to a female character being pregnant regardless of relationship status.

  and the wranglers canonized the tags "Alpha/Omega", "Alpha/Beta", "Beta/Beta", "Beta/Omega"; but where is "Alpha/Alpha" and "Omega/Omega" (the tags have 177 and 90 pages of fics each, respectively) ?

  Thank you for the question! "Fpreg" historically has referred to a pregnancy involving a female/female couple, which you can find more information about on the Fempreg Fanlore page.
  Since we did not previously have a "Female Pregnancy" canonical aside from "Fpreg", some users used "Fpreg" to mean "a female character is pregnant" while others used it to mean "pregnancy from a female/female couple." When renaming the canonical, we decided to canonize tags for both concepts, so users can more easily differentiate the two when finding and tagging their works.

  Thanks for the question! We found that users make distinctions depending on whether alpha, beta, or omega characters were pregnant. As a result, we've made separate canonical tags for all three. If you'd like to find all Omegaverse and Pregnancy-related works, you can filter for both "Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics" and "Pregnancy" at the same time.
