Summary
When Jack pulled Castiel from the Empty he was covered in black goo, kneeling on all fours and immediately torn between wanting to wrap his kid in a hug and go back to the shadows. He had not expected to come back this time. Not many deathbed confessions are given a response and Castiel didn’t want to know.
It took nearly a year to get Heaven in order. Father and son worked side by side to make Heaven the way it should have been from the beginning. But when it was done, Jack didn’t want to interfere anymore. He wanted to be hands off. He wanted to be a kid.
When Dean was walking through a small coastal side town, killing time while his Baby was being repaired, he hadn’t expect to run into a small child with familiar blue eyes, nor did he expect to hear the voice of supposedly dead best friend.

Dean almost couldn’t believe it when he saw that huddled body swaddled in a tan trenchcoat sitting in the middle of the dungeon floor. Cas was back. After months of searching, digging through the archives to find a way to drag his ass out of the Empty, they had finally done it.
But something was wrong.
This wasn’t the Castiel that smiled up at him with a tearful goodbye after revealing his true happiest moment. This was a wild, snarling beast of a man, warped and twisted, feral thanks to the damage of the Empty. A man who would probably rip out Dean’s throat rather than confess his love.
Even when Dean breaks through that wild exterior, he discovers that Castiel still thinks he’s trapped in the hell that is the Empty. That nothing around him is real.
Dean just has to get through to him.

Sam thinks his is going as well as can be expected. If you asked Dean, he'd say his is too - continually fucked up by his own nature, helpless to be anything but who he truly is: a letdown. Dean has reconnected with someone from his past, who provides a measure of solace and comfort. Even so, Dean's mind is always on Cas, and his heart seems like it went with Cas to the empty.

When Dean’s grief is loud enough to wake him in The Empty, the entity casts Castiel out, but not without a price. He comes to in a barn in Pontiac, Illinois, with no memory of who or what he is. With nothing but an initial on the back of a photograph, and his heart’s instinct telling him to head west, Castiel begins a journey of self-discovery.
Meanwhile, Dean is a broken shell. Rather than live under his brother and Eileen's pitying and concerned gaze, Dean decided it was time to move out of the bunker. With Jody’s help, Dean moves into a small lake house just outside of Sioux Falls, where he can mourn in peace and in his own time. Dean is determined to be better for Cas, even if it’s too little too late.
Little does Dean know that it is never too late, as the Cas in Dean’s dreams is doing everything he can, to find his way back home.
