Finding out that Vaan (and Penelo) can't read Standard (the universal language in Ivalice) and only Dalmascan languages. Balthier offers Fran to teach them. Vaan does tell Basch he and Penelo never went to school, and then the war started soon after. Penelo's parent started teaching her, but perished in the war. Balthier also adds writing practice. Vaan and Balthier a banter-type realtionship and despite everything Balthier does like Vaan and reluctantly find his cute.
Balthier sarcastically asks Fran why their here again, Fran responds because Balthier said there'd be great resure. bathier looks at Vaan and says he doesn't really regret it. Fran asks if he means Vaan, Balthier denies it aht Vaan is not that great, pretty but not good enoguh. Fran chastises him “Tis only a fool who holds an emerald and thinks he has glass.”.
Vaan tells larsa their learning to read Standard, but can read Dalmascan. Fran and Balthier defend them just incase. Ashe is upset at the injustice of children not being able to attend school, Basch interject that neither went to school. Ashe gets more upset and that everyone at Vaans age should know how to read. Vaan tries to interject, but Ashe asks why learn Dalmascan when therest of the world uses Standard. Vaan then swears at her in Dalmascan causing both her and Basch to be taken aback. According to vaan they also swore at imperials too, before he lectures Ashe on not telling people what language hey should or shouldn't know. Ashe apologizes.
While talking about what Vaan meant to ask Fran, Balthier asks Vaan how old his parents were when they died? Expecting him to be a bit sad like he is with Reks, but Vaan answers at around 30s, they had Rek around Vaans age. Balthier winces at so young.Vaan shrugs and states its the norm, before whispering that Penelo would have married his brother if he hadn't died. Balthier ask if she hates Basch or his brother, Vaan says no.
After showering Balthier thinks of Vaan and realizes he does find him attractive, and gets turned on while masturbating since Vaan wouldn't know about it, but it becomes more a fantasy of what he wants to do with Vaan.
Reddas rescues the party, and Vaan ask to see his ships. Reddas accepts warmly and shows him. Balthier can tell from his delighted face Vaan hasn't driven an airship and wants to ammend that. Vaan teases Balthier about being his apprentice, Balthier say he isn't and tells Vaan to go read to him. Vaan agrees and chooses the one book balthier didn't want him to read didn't, where he got his name from. “When I throw you from this airship, they will never find you,” Balthier promises. “There are a thousand places you could land. They could be looking forever and never-”
In Giruvegan they wonder where Ashe is following, Vaan says she see's 'him'. While following her Balthier who she can see. vaan heasitates but whispers she see's Rasler. Basch lets it slip before saying thats impossible and that he died, Vaan says he's seen him too and his brother. But now only Ashe can see them. Before moving alone, balthier stop Vaan and tells him to inform him if he see's anymore ghost, Vaan says he doesn't seen them anyore. Balthier is still adamant, Vaan agrees.
Reddas tells the party to get the other pirates to talk, vaan says that easy to pick up rumours. Reddas agrees and tells Vaan that Balthier has an interested in him. when Balthier asks if Reddas had anything interesting to say. Vaan says maybe before running off. After dinner at Reddas Balthier waits for Vaan and which he tells him to come sleep at the strahl as he needs to tell him something tomorrow. Scarng Vaan but Balthier tells him he's teaching him to fly, to which he makes Vaan sit in his lap. tensions rise and the two mess around in Balthier's room, balthier likes Vaan biting his earring.
In the Barheim Passage, Penelo and Vaan loot the corpses, basch tries to stop them,but Balthier points out he did as well. At the Pharos, balthier tells Vaan if anything happens to him he wants Vaan to take the strahl, Vaan asks what hr means, Balthier implies he might die. Vaan gets upset asking if thats the only reasons he taught him how to fly. Balthier says no it was mainly for his own personal reason, Vaan makes becoming expressions when he flies. Vaan teases him. Before kissing him on the cheek and telling him not to worry.
Balthier kills his father, Vaan gives him Cid's glasses he picked up afterwards. Penelo's Esper forces them to land near the Henna mines, where another Esper is. After fighting Zodiark, it chooses Vaan as his host because he was alos chosen by the Occuria. After telling the rest of the party, its revealed the Occuria was choosing between Ashe and Vaan to be the next ruler.
Balthier writes a letter for Vaan. After they return to reclaim the Strahl, Vaan hits Balthier first. Balthier found a treasure. -
