But the toothy grin the alchemist sends the prince’s way over his shoulder afterwards is still, somehow, pearly white.
Ling’s fingers dig into the scarlet red of Ed’s jacket.
“Wow,” Greed and Ling say at the same time, but for entirely different reasons.
Or, five times Ling held Ed’s proverbial flower while he threw himself headfirst into a fight, and one time Ed returned the favor.

(Even before the war, tensions are high, and hatred is brewing. Tirzah holds her newborn son, with eyes as gold as his father’s, and pale-sun hair halfway there, and she decides that if Ishvala wants him hidden, then Tirzah will not brand him where his genes have not.) -

Summary
Ed’s back in Amestris after a very long vacation. It seems a little different from how he left it, and he’s really not sure how he feels about all these changes. The Amestris he knew used to be a center of learning and prosperity and innovation. Now? Censorship, food shortages, and a military government causing more problems than it solves. It definitely isn’t the homecoming Ed envisioned.
Actually, he knows exactly how he feels about the changes: they fucking suck.
Roy Mustang, State Alchemist, seems to be the only one in the government who’s trying to change things. His interest in Ed’s unusual alchemical abilities has Ed wondering if he and Roy might be able to fix what’s rotten in Amestris. He'll never join the State Alchemy program to do it, because Ed’s sworn never getting involved in politics again. He’s done leaving swathes of bloodstained sand in his wake.
Still, Roy and Amestris's plight draws Ed in. When things go from bad to worse, placing Roy within range of the firing squad, Ed has to wonder if sometimes, promises aren’t meant to be kept.
