Summary
The first time Nie Mingjue reaches out for Jiang Cheng in public, Jiang Cheng flinches away. He doesn’t even think about it, it’s just habit at this point but he does notice the confused frown on Nie Mingjue’s face.
Jiang Cheng tries to soften his action by immediately reaching out for Nie Mingjue’s hand in turn and it seems as if Nie Mingjue is appeased when he threads their fingers together.
The second time it happens catches even Jiang Cheng off guard, because Nie Mingjue comes up behind him and puts a hand to his shoulder. It’s just a light touch, nothing at all like Wei Wuxian’s, but Jiang Cheng’s body reacts before his mind can catch up and he moves away from Nie Mingjue.
The third time is when Nie Mingjue finally seems to catch on that something else is going on here.

Summary
Jiang Cheng reaches for him the moment he’s above the surface and he can tell that something must have happened because Nie Mingjue is incredibly pale.
“Let’s head back,” Jiang Cheng urges, his only goal to get Nie Mingjue out of the water and hear what happened and he knows that Nie Mingjue must be kind of shaken when he doesn’t protest and simply swims back to the pier where he immediately pulls himself out of the water and even going so far as to take a step away from the lake.
“What happened?” Jiang Cheng asks as he pulls himself out as well and Nie Mingjue lets out a shaky breath.
“Something dragged me under,” he says, his left hand around his right wrist. “There’s something in the lake.”

Summary
Nie Mingjue knows that something is wrong with Jiang Cheng the moment he steps into the apartment. Nie Mingjue can’t even pinpoint exactly what it is that tips him off, he just knows that Jiang Cheng’s energy is completely off.
“What’s wrong?” he asks instead of greeting Jiang Cheng like he normally would and for his troubles he’s met with a wide-eyed stare.
“Nothing,” Jiang Cheng says but he winces as the words leave his mouth.
So he doesn’t even believe himself, that’s good to know.

Summary
This marriage is not born out of love and Jiang Cheng knows that Nie Mingjue only agreed for a lack of a better option. The union has been very beneficial to Yunmeng Jiang but of course the same can’t be said for Qinghe Nie.
It’s not as if they are struggling–Jiang Cheng would never permit that–but things have been a bit turbulent for them, ever since Nie Mingjue stepped down as Sect Leader and Nie Huaisang took over. Marrying Nie Mingjue off to secure some alliances was a smart move for them but Jiang Cheng feels bad that he can’t offer anything to them.
His Sect is no longer in danger of being crushed under Jin Guangshan–or anyone else really–but they are still far off from how they were before the war, so he can’t freely offer any support or goods to Qinghe Nie. And to top it all off he can’t even offer to be a good husband to Nie Mingjue either.

“Zongzhu is being a little bit anxious about something, that’s the reason he hasn’t written to you or come to visit you,” Nie Zonghui explains and really, that’s no explanation at all, if you ask Jiang Cheng.
“What is it?” he demands to know but Nie Zonghui simply regards him with a long look.
“Believe me, it’s something that’s best explained in person, but it’s nothing bad. And it doesn’t mean that zongzhu wants to end this courtship; in fact, he’s so stressed out because he doesn’t want it to end but he doesn’t know how to break—this to you. Please, just come along, it will all make sense when zongzhu and the second master explain it to you.”
