Castiel’s life is pretty well on-track for someone who’s just turned thirty, if he does say so himself — he’s got a great job at the university, he’s just finished his master’s degree, and he has it on good authority that he’s going to be accepted for his PhD next year. Things go slightly awry when he wakes up one morning with a neck so sore and so stiff that he can’t move his head. He’s not sure how he obtained a musculoskeletal injury while writing his thesis, but he is sure that the physiotherapist who will be treating the injury is quite literally the most attractive man he’s ever seen in his life. It only gets worse when Dean turns up as a tutor at the university, which, incidentally, he does at the same time that Castiel receives an unsolicited nude from an unknown number.

While staying at a hotel for a work conference, Dean opens what he thinks is the closet door but turns out to be an adjoining room that has been accidentally left unlocked. He is greeted by the most attractive man he has ever seen in nothing but a towel. The man, Cas, seems incredibly amused, while Dean has zero chill about the situation. After the embarrassing encounter, Dean discovers Cas is the moderator of a panel he is speaking on.

To tie up the loose ends of a hunt, Dean is forced to go undercover and visit Brock Pleasure Ranch, a horrifying establishment that markets its inhabitants to people with ‘monstrous’ tastes.
It should have been a simple thing, to persuade a mer to give him a few scales for a spell. All part of the usual Winchester byline: saving people, hunting things.
But Castiel is far less of a ‘thing’ than Dean expected. He might not be human, but he’s definitely a person.
And that means he needs saving, too.
