Summary
“Dad,” Alma cuts Stede off, though her eyes lift up to Ed, and he gets the hint.
“Got it,” he replies, taking Stede by the arm. “Let’s go, Kermie. Bedtime.”
He blows kisses to his children, they both call goodnights and happy Halloweens and I love yous to them, met with a chorus of echoing replies of, “I love you, Daddy!” and “Happy Halloween!” and “Goodnight!” that makes Ed smile all the way up the stairs.
Still. He doesn’t forget his goal.
The second their bedroom door is closed, Ed locks it with a snap, and Stede’s already on him, taking Ed by the shoulders and leading with his hips to slam him up into it, fingers threading up into his hair.

Summary
Ed reaches out, running his fingers over the thick swell of Stede’s tail near the join where his hip would be. The scales sparkle under his touch, glittering in the transition from tail into flesh, and it’s pretty much impossible for him not to be intoxicated by the appearance of him, the feel of him. It’s part of him, innate, bone-deep, and Ed would be lying if his character wasn’t just as drunk on him as he is.
“Don’t worry,” Ed assures him. “I won’t tell anyone. It’ll be our secret still.” He hesitates, then asks, “Were you really in a shipwreck?”
“Yeah,” Stede answers. “I was.” He grins, this time, and his sharp creature-teeth flash at Ed. “It might have been my fault a bit, though. And maybe not my ship.”
“Captain Edwards, indeed,” Ed comments.

Summary
“Bonnet,” Izzy says, loud and clear, and Stede blinks into staring up at him. “Are you with me?”
Stede jerks his head in a nod. His jaw hurts, teeth aching from being clenched together; he tells Izzy, “I want to wait for Ed to get here.”
“I’m not sure you have much of a choice,” Izzy argues. At Stede’s heated glare, he asks, “Well, what the fuck did you two think was going to happen, you coming in like this?”

Summary
“We’re having a baby?” Ed asks him, incredulous. “Like, a real fucking baby? Our baby?”
The way Stede is looking at him is the same way Ed is feeling: like all of this is too good to be true. It’s squeezing him from the inside out, and he loves it.
“Yes, we are,” Stede tells him.
“And you’re okay?” Ed asks, insistent.
There’s a smile coming through Ed’s tears when he tells him, “Yes, I am. Besides the— the usual. It’s no worse than with Alma or Louis.”
Everything comes crashing through Ed at once, and he has to choke through asking him, “And you want this? For real, Stede, like— You’ve gotta mean it before I say this, mate, I swear—”
“I mean it,” Stede promises him. “Ed, I mean it, really.” He strokes his hands up through Ed’s hair, holding tight to him. “Tell me.”
Ed’s eyes skim over Stede’s face before they lock onto his eyes, again, and he tells him, “I want this, too.”

Summary
“Don’t worry, sweet thing,” the captain tells her, using that same term of false-endearment on her, and she nods, sniffles, pretends to fall into line with him, lets him think he’s protecting her— or wooing her, or stealing her for himself. Whatever works. “We can take you with us, long as you show us where Blackbeard’s sleeping.”
Kyrie shakes her head, plays at fear, tells him, “No, you can’t, they’ll kill you— They’ll kill me—”
“Nobody’s killing me tonight,” the captain insists to her. Kyrie doesn’t let herself smile. “Besides, Blackbeard’s— What, seventy years old?”
Wrong again.
