JJ Maybank kept coming back anyway.
They had been best friends for so long that touching, fighting, sleeping tangled together and showing up bloody on each other’s doorstep barely counted as intimacy anymore.
Then John B disappeared into a treasure hunt, half the Outer Banks started trying to kill them, JJ began volunteering himself as collateral damage, and Cara discovered there were some lines she was willing to cross if it meant keeping him alive.
The problem was that JJ had never understood how much she needed him.
The bigger problem was that Cara had never understood it either.
