Summary
“Not breaking the Emperor’s laws, are we?” he hummed. He dropped down into the grass and gave his staff a twirl as he approached her.
“I recognize no laws but my own,” she challenged, “Maybe you're breaking my laws!”
He chuckled, then jabbed his staff into the soft ground and removed his mask.
“I would never, my dear,” he murmured with a smile.

Summary
"Palistrom carving is an ancient and noble art," says the elderly man in front of you. He has a hard, serious face pocketed by sharp wrinkles that make him look a bit like a folded pastry, but you know better than to say such a thing, though once upon a time, you did not. You have learned through trial and error that it is safer to speak only when spoken to. "One that only the most elite of practitioners are allowed to perform now that Palistrom has become so sparse."
You know that. It's one of the reasons (though there are many) that you wonder why a piece is sitting here on your kitchen table, and why that piece is apparently yours.

Summary
Miles did not like witches.
Unfortunately, the line between him and witches was so far past blurry that it may as well not even be there, making it more accurate to say that Miles did not like people.

Summary
"I broke him," Raine admitted, shutting their eyes. "Smashing my violin was one final desperate attempt to stop him. To stop everything. I thought it would be the last spell I would ever cast, one last note that we would play together fighting that monster to the bitter end. Now I'm here, and he's not."
