This was so well done. I can see the thought and effort you put into it and should only be getting praise for this.
Having Max talk about Lucas to other people is one of my absolute favourite things so to get a whole fic about it absolutely hits the sweet spot. I also love the idea of people finding out how long they have been together for or there has never ever been a hint of anyone else. That’s so special to me and such an important part of their story. And the idea that they are telling that story till they’re old and grey….. so beautiful.
I also thought it was really good how repetitive the topic of race was in this fic as it’s so important to their story and future lives too.
Honestly I was totally content not having Lucas actually appear in the fic considering the premise but when he showed up in the end after Max was talking to their new born, I was grinning like a total idiot. It was so charming and so them. I loved it.

This fic was lowkey 60% self indulgence because I too adore Max talking about Lucas to other people and especially new characters reacting to their relationship. It might have been more common in the 80s than now, but I still think finding out a couple has not only been together in middle school, but also have never even kissed anyone else would blow someone's mind, and since I wasn't seeing it enough in fics, I had to write it myself finally.
And yeah, I was worried bringing up race/racism in so many of the sections might feel repetitive, but that's their life and something that would constantly come up for them, and I often skirt around it after mentioning it once in other fics, so it felt right to finally give it more time.
