      Nope, as far as I can tell antis have no interest in targets they can't easily access. They're more likely to harass someone who read a particular book than go after the original author.

      The real problem as I've experienced it is not that individual extremists exist, but that they've managed to spread their ideas using these public debacles. For instance, while they have yet to prove a single case of fiction becoming reality, their constant assertions that "only bad people could possibly consume Bad Things" have started to bleed into discussions like we see elsewhere in this thread (the "well, why don't people just get better coping mechanisms" post). That's not the actual point. The point is, writing about a completely fictional act of violence is not the same as committing a real life crime.

      Antis have managed to shift the conversation into these pigeonholes where we implicitly start agreeing with the premise of their argument -- that some fiction is so badwrongevil that there's no way to interact with it ethically -- and that is starting to worry me.

        That's not the actual point. The point is, writing about a completely fictional act of violence is not the same as committing a real life crime.

        I did actually point this out in my post in that subthread discussion - asking outright whether it isn't actually preferable that people write fictional material exploring these subjects, rather than ever acting on such ideas with real people involved. Not that the commenter actually answered that point.
