Comment on Five Things Lona Said

  1. For the most part we understand each other perfectly, we're lucky in that regard! And we also decided that we're using the Dutch 'standard language' (which is usually Dutch-Dutch), so that settles most disputes. Though it's not that we're checking the dictionary every other word to check if it's Standard, 9 times out of 10 these discussions happen because someone in the team will beta a document and go "Wait... why did you translate this like that, it sounds weird." Then we'll talk about it, see what the rest thinks and usually settle on a translation after a quick talk, but sometimes we use a source to prove that something is or isn't standard. In cases where we have two correct ways of translating a word (Dutch has that sometimes) and we can't settle it through discussion, we put it up for a vote and go for the translation with the majority vote.

    1. Cool! Thanks for the in-depth reply. I'm not good with languages besides my own, but the etiquette of translation has always interested me as someone who ends up reading a lot of books translated to English. :D
