For the most part we understand each other perfectly, we're lucky in that regard! And we also decided that we're using the Dutch 'standard language' (which is usually Dutch-Dutch), so that settles most disputes. Though it's not that we're checking the dictionary every other word to check if it's Standard, 9 times out of 10 these discussions happen because someone in the team will beta a document and go "Wait... why did you translate this like that, it sounds weird." Then we'll talk about it, see what the rest thinks and usually settle on a translation after a quick talk, but sometimes we use a source to prove that something is or isn't standard. In cases where we have two correct ways of translating a word (Dutch has that sometimes) and we can't settle it through discussion, we put it up for a vote and go for the translation with the majority vote.
Cool! Thanks for the in-depth reply. I'm not good with languages besides my own, but the etiquette of translation has always interested me as someone who ends up reading a lot of books translated to English. :D
