One of the things that's been both fun and hard in writing this fic is playing with moments where Cassian somehow maintains one narrative about himself while also doing things that don't actually fit that narrative at all, and "good luck with that, buddy" indeed. XD Also I have been thinking about you while writing this one, because I got to sneak in a few little Melshi & Kay scenes, and I am really looking forward to sharing them with you. <3
And ughhhh I'm very happy to hear that Melshi's particular brand of fatalism came through in the "Am I dead?" scene. I enjoyed/made myself sad thinking about the ways they each might have imagined seeing each other again: Cassian holding onto the idea of seeing Melshi somewhere far away and unconnected to any of the things Cassian has done - just Melshi out there living a life - while Melshi can only really let himself consider that consolation coming at/after death. The next chapter is INDEED going to be focalized through Melshi, and I'm very excited to share more of our Sad Long Space Scot's perspective on the meeting.
