Comment on No Survivors

  1. finally got around to this chapter and oh man <3 love the routine they enter, everything from Melshi learning to put his weight on him to Cassian making food and them going to gather herbs doubling as physical therapy… such meaningful things. also Melshi and Kay both being deprogrammed Imperial tools in a way and hanging out talking abt labor prisons
I love the bar scene because they both have strong reactions but you can see that they have different triggers—Cassian’s being his pain about being the only survivor in a situation, and Melshi defending him when this trauma was noticed and exploited… :) I love the buildup here can’t wait for more <3

    1. Ahhhh thank you so much for this wonderful comment, Gav!!! I love the way you describe Melshi and Kay as aligned in their deprograming: I thought a lot about how they'd both be particularly good at picking apart Imperial systems because they've both been forced to learn about them from the inside, and you've put your finger on that connection so effectively.

And I'm so glad to hear that the responses Cassian and Melshi have in the bar felt clear! One of the big things I wanted to explore in this story was the very fraught relationship Cassian might have to the idea of being a survivor, and I also thought Melshi would be instinctively protective of that - even if he doesn't understand all the reasons it's such a traumatic subject to Cassian. It means a lot to know that landed for you. <3<3<3

Thank you again for reading and for taking the time to leave these lovely words!!! I'm so happy you enjoyed the chapter, and I hope the last two will feel satisfying.
