Summary
The worst part, Klaus thinks, isn’t the dying. Don’t tell Ben, but he’s kind of been apathetic towards that part for….a while now. Death and Klaus have a certain relationship that defies explanation, and while he’ll always be afraid of the ghosts he can’t actually remember ever being afraid of the part where he’d kick the bucket. Maybe it’s part of his powers, maybe it’s just him.
So it’s not the dying. It’s not the apocalypse, either, because Klaus is actually a little surprised that hadn’t happened sooner, one way or another. It’s not the fact that Five’s disappearance jumped him straight into hell, or that Klaus is a ghost now, or that he is apparently stuck following his brother around like a discount Casper.
No, Klaus can deal with all of those things. Badly, but he can.
The worst part is that Five thinks he’s alone, and Klaus can’t tell him otherwise.

Summary
It’s been six months. Six months since the end of the world, the end of Klaus. Six months since Klaus became a ghost, and six months since Five popped out of the timestream into the end of the world. Six months since Klaus realized he’d have to uselessly watch as his little brother takes a double-black-diamond crash course in post-apocalyptic survival, and made his decision to stick around and give (unheard, mostly unfollowed) advice.
There have been other milestones, as well. It’s been five and a half months since Five found the library that is now his home base. Four months since he brought Delores back and made her his creepy mannequin-wife. Three months since he switched entirely to drinking alcohol, which makes him the second-youngest alcoholic in the history of the Family Hargreeves. Six weeks since he actually started constructing that winter shelter he’s been muttering about for months. One week since he broke his leg when he misjudged the stability of a pile of scrap and couldn’t jump away in time.
Two days since he ran out of food.

“Klaus,” he says eventually.
“That’s me,” Klaus says, and, “Um,” because what do you even say to your fourteen-year-old brother you haven’t seen in seventeen years after you’ve died and spent the last six months invisibly stalking him through the apocalypse.

Summary
Five rolls his eyes. “You indulge him too much,” he tells Delores.
“I will have you know that it is my birthday, and when the birthday boy asks for a dance it is extremely rude to deny him,” Klaus sniffs. “Delores isn’t like the other heathens around here.”
“Yeah, well, what about when the other birthday boy wants to cut in?” Five moves towards them, hand held out to Delores in invitation.
Klaus stops spinning and eyes the hand. He looks between it and Delores. Finally he huffs and hands her over. “I’m the better dancer, though,” he tells Five.
‘I’m sorry, but he’s right,’ Delores said.
“I can live with that,” Five says, and holds Delores close as he moves in a slow circle.

Summary
In the five and a half years since landing in the apocalypse, Five has learned a lot. Some of it is predictable, like learning how to repair cars and machines and bicycles and - everything, really. Rationing his food to strike the best balance between making it last and giving him enough nutrients. Taking care of his socks, possibly the most important article of clothing he can wear. Cabin fever can strike even a person who couldn’t go outside the house for their first decade of life. How to be an only child.
But there are the things that he could never have predicted, like the rushing excitement of playing a stupid game that never has a clear winner. The cleansing feeling of apologizing for his failures. Sitting next to the love of his life as they watch the sunset together. How to be a little brother.

All seems to be going well for Five and Klaus, until tragedy strikes. And in the middle of the apocalypse, there is little margin for error.

Summary
There is a woman standing in front of Five.
This is far more unexpected than it sounds. As far as Five was aware, there were no women left alive on the planet. It’s kind of arguable if Delores counts, but even if she did she doesn’t have legs and thus couldn’t stand.
Five was under the (well-substantiated) impression that he himself is the last living human on the planet. Klaus is the last ghost, as well. They’ve spent the past eighteen years that way, and Five didn’t expect it to change until he figures out the last of his equations and they jump back.
But now there is a living, breathing, human woman standing in front of them, and if Klaus’ panic attack is anything to go by there’s just been a significant increase in the local ghost population.
Five has always hated not knowing what the fuck is going on.

After eighteen years of surviving the apocalypse, Klaus and Five receive an unexpected offer that lets them leave it behind. Now all they have to worry about is surviving the Commission.

Summary
Klaus is pretty sure he’s hallucinating. He can’t remember taking any drugs that would cause hallucinations, usually avoids them like the plague. He fucking hates that shit, the entire reason he’s an addict is because he already sees things other people can’t, why would he want more of that, but he must have taken something and forgotten, because it’s the only explanation for the scene in front of him.
Because in front of him is Five.
Little Number Five. Their thirteen-year-old brother, the one who ran out on them seventeen years ago and never came back. The one that left a gaping hole in the middle of their family, just as big as Ben if not bigger, because no one ever knew what happened to him. The one Klaus tried to conjure, night after night, not sure whether to be happy or not when he kept failing.
“I’m back,” Five says, staring straight at him, and Klaus almost flinches from the intensity in his eyes. “I’m home.”
