Pepper sighs heavily but doesn’t look away from him. “There is a woman on line one, her name is Mary Fitzpatrick—”
Tony feels like someone breaks an ice cold egg on the top of his head. Frozen yolk spearing down the back of his neck.
“—and she says she had your baby, Tony. Two days ago, she’s still in the hospital. She’s one hundred percent sure it’s yours.”
Tony stares at her.
Yeah, he’s had this happen before. It’s never panned out, always been a cash grab, and if he does have any biological kids out there, the mothers haven’t contacted him. All the ones that tried their hands were bullshitting.
But he remembers Mary Fitzpatrick.
And without picking up the call, without taking a test, without seeing the baby—he knows.

Summary
Tony feels like he knows what he’s doing now, preparation be damned. He’s a fast learner. He may not be ready, but he can handle it. He feels like he’s got this down to a science, to a routine. And Peter likes him. He definitely likes him. He was worried that would be the hardest thing, because babies are fickle and can supposedly sense how people are or whatever the hell, so he was absolutely sure his own kid would sense what an asshole he is and immediately be done with his presence. But Peter likes him, which is the biggest win of all. The rest is just gravy. If he can create a working circuit board at four years old, he can totally figure out how to take care of a baby, especially if that baby is his own flesh and blood. Every smile Peter graces him with gives him confidence. Every smile beats the doubt down.
So when May and Ben both have to go back to work, Tony thinks he’s got it.

“What are you doing?” Pepper asks, letting the door close behind her. “Are you doing experiments on Peter? Don’t do experiments on Peter.”
The room goes much quieter, and she hears Tony scoff, and Peter laughs in response. He slips a little lower in the contraption and Tony catches him so he doesn’t fall out.
“I am not doing experiments on my son,” Tony says. “Pepper. Virginia Potts. C’mon.”
“Then what are you doing?” Pepper asks, her hands on her hips. “Why is he in there? What are you trying to do? Is this some kind of symbiotic thing?”
Both Tony and Peter laugh at the same time, and it’s like the same sound but in different octaves. It nearly knocks her back.
“Obie made a point of saying I—am holding the kid so much that I barely get anything done, and he’s right, but Peter doesn’t like sitting in any of the chairs or being in his playpen if I’m within eyesight, and if I’m not within eyesight he starts freaking out, and I’ve gotta be within eyesight or I can’t see him and God knows what he’d get up to, huh?” Tony looks down at him then, bouncing him up and down.

But this is unlike his Peter. Lethargic, quiet, still. No babbling, no little responses to the conversation Tony tries to make. He seems downcast, he seems sad. And not in the screaming, sobbing way. In the silent, terrifying way. Uninterested in playing. Barely moving. A lot of sighing. He eats his food without complaint, and that’s usually the time when he complains the most. He doesn’t even make a mess. He’s just—not right. Not what Tony has gotten used to.
Withdrawn. His little personality shrinking back.
When Tony realizes it’s not gonna stop any time soon, he immediately gets the doctor to his penthouse to see what’s going on. He flutters around when she arrives and chews the inside of his cheek until it bleeds.

“Oh,” Tony says, absentmindedly swaying Peter back and forth. He’s giggling, happy at May’s arrival. Tony cocks his head at her. “Why do you look like that? Were you watching me? How long were you watching me? Was I doing something wrong?” His heart is beating a little too fast.
She laughs, a little louder than normal, a little higher pitched. She shakes her head and avoids his eyes. “No—well, I mean, I was watching, I didn’t mean to be watching, but I watched—I opened the door and I saw—the whole airplane thing—”
Heart beating. “I'm always really careful when I do that, don’t worry, I’ve got that—like one hundred percent no issues.”
Peter sighs happily, leaning into him and picking at a button on his jacket.
May shakes her head again, differently this time, and she meets his eyes. “There was nothing wrong, Tony. It’s just—sweet. So sweet. Tooth rotting. And you’re alone and you weren’t expecting anybody and you’re still acting like that all by yourself and it was just so sweet. So sweet. That’s all.”

Pepper has noticed the changes.
She always knew Tony was a good person, or she wouldn’t be working for him. She knew what there was underneath, and she became fast friends with Rhodey and heard all about that person that Tony has been trying to hide, the one who he really is. The one that had a security blanket all through college. The one who still drinks a glass of milk in the morning before his coffee. The one who likes to sing in the shower. The one who presses reverent fingers to a photo of his mother every day before he leaves his apartment.
Tony is a mess of contradictions, of thinly veiled worries and fear. Tony puts on a mask and expects everyone to accept it, and most people do. Well, people who don’t know any better. She’s felt strangely like she’s known his heart since the beginning, since the interview, since his eyes went downcast and he cleared his throat and ran his hand through his hair—but she hates the way that sounds. She’s better than that.

“So what are we gonna say?” Tony asks, carrying Peter against his side. “Dada. Not lamp or taco. Dada.” He narrows his eyes at himself as he heads into the elevator, quickly punching the button for his penthouse and leaning back against the wall.
Peter keeps swinging the cup and listens intently.
“Maybe I should stop saying those other two words if I don’t want you to say them,” Tony says. “Nope. Just Dada. My only request. What d’you think, huh? You gonna do that for me? I mean, I do a lot for you, it’s only fair.”
Peter laughs at him. Tony has never been a big fan of that when it comes to other adults doing it, even with people he likes (especially people he likes) but Peter finding him funny is yet another ‘win’ in a long line of wins. Peter laughs, and looks at him like that. Big eyes with crinkles at the corner. Soft smile. The kid doesn’t understand the concepts of love and trust yet, but despite that, he loves and trusts Tony. And that’s...amazing.

His kid, who has grease smeared all around his mouth from the sandwich he’s plowing through.
“Okay, maybe I need to try to make it a little less greasy,” Tony says, grabbing one of the baby wipes and rubbing at Peter’s mouth. Peter yells, trying to swerve away from him, but Tony snorts and keeps going after him. Peter’s brows furrow and he yells again, babbling out something angry as he tries to swat Tony’s arm away. “Oh my goodness, I know, I know, you’re eating. I get it. I’m not gonna deprive you, you’re just disgusting.”
Peter shrieks, one of his alarm screams, and slams his hands on the table. Tony finishes up and shakes his head, pitching the baby wipe into the trash can. Peter glares at him for a second, not moving or trying to eat, and then Tony smiles. Peter immediately smiles back, saying something else incomprehensible as he resumes his previous activity.

Tony wonders if Peter knows what the hell rice is. Tony’s been making sure to repeat things when they’re around them, about a hundred times, point, repeat, point, repeat, like a moron. Peter just stares at him, sometimes repeats them back, but there’s no way to know if he really gets it until Tony hears him use the word himself and connect the dots.
Peter laughs a little bit, slamming his left hand on the picture book he’s got in front of him. He forces the page to flip, crumpling it a little bit in the process. Tony cranes his neck to look at what it is, sitting up.
“What’s that, monkey joe?” he asks, one hand on Peter’s shoulder. “Is that a—lawn and garden book?” He scoffs, looking at the page Peter flipped to, something about the gardens at Buckingham Palace. “What loser left that here? We’re not gardeners. Where’s your monster truck book, huh? Have you pulled all the pages out yet?”

“Alright,” Ben says, stepping a little closer to Tony.
“Well, we weren’t expecting it either,” Tony says, finally at a loss for what to say. “Uh. Never exactly thought I’d be—formally meeting you.”
“I’m sorry,” Richard says. He stares at Peter, and it makes Tony feel weird. It makes him feel really weird. He tries to recall the things May said about him the one time they talked about him, and the details don’t come, but it wasn’t anything good. Knew Mary was better than him. Couldn’t deal with it. That was their downfall. “Jesus, he looks like her. He’s one?”
“That’s what the hat says,” Tony says, anxiously, looking around like someone is gonna run out and jump them.

They have played hide and seek. A lot. Hours and hours’ worth, in fact, to the point where Tony pretty much knows all of Peter’s hiding spots, thankfully, and when he rushes to go hide in his room, Tony makes sure the door to the laundry room is firmly fucking locked and closed.
They go back and forth for four rounds when it happens.
Tony checks everywhere. Under the table, under the sink, under the beds, behind the desk, in the crib, under the blankets, behind the curtains—everywhere. Everywhere.
And he can’t find him.

He’s starting to imagine the fire and brimstone Obie would throw his way, when he hears it.
It. Being his son, alone in his room at four in the morning, laughing.
Tony rids his mind of all thoughts and sits up on his elbow, staring at the monitor. Peter is laying on his back like he has been since he fell asleep, and his eyes are closed. The video quality on this monitor is a lot better than the last, and Tony can see the small smile on his face, the way he holds his blue blanket in firm fists.
For a minute he thinks he imagined it, but then Peter does it again. Lets out a high pitched laugh, and then he’s sitting up, like a shot, almost as if the previous ‘sleep’ pose was just that, a pose, some kind of ruse, like he believes Tony is watching. Tony has yet to buy the monitor where he can talk through it, though he’s been severely considering it, but Peter isn’t aware of the monitor or what it does or the fact that Tony always has an eye on him.
So what the hell is he doing?

May still feels like she’s in an alternate reality, sometimes. She looks at Tony and expects to see Richard, but then she remembers when she is, who’s here and who’s not. She has to admit to herself that she likes Tony, that he’s better than she thought he was, and she likes what he brings out in Ben. Ben never really seemed to mesh with Richard, but Tony, despite being multiple tax brackets above them, gets Ben talking like May used to see him do in high school. It’s nice to see. It’s really, really nice for him to have a friend.
She trails behind them and takes pictures, and doesn’t let her mind wander. Instead, she just admires how Tony is out here in a monkey costume—one of the most famous men in the world, walking the streets in a monkey costume, purely because his son enjoys it.

“Dada?” Peter asks, facing the TV. Then he looks up at Tony, and his eyes widen. “Dada?” he asks, with more intensity.
“What?” Tony asks, laughing. “What’s happening?”
Peter looks back and forth between the TV and Tony, and Tony’s face hurts trying not to bust out into full hysterics. Peter’s eyes stop on him and they go very, very wide, and he doesn’t say anything, like he’s trying to figure him out.

“He’s a planner,” Pepper says, gently. “He plans things and then he never gets around to them. He has good intentions.”
“Stop lying about me right in front of me,” Tony says. “I always do everything I want to do, every time, exactly when I want to.”
They all laugh, and he narrows his eyes.
Peter crawls around. “Beep beep.”

Summary
Peter is two years and one month old the first time Tony has to go on an extended trip. He’s been avoiding them like the plague, diverting Obie whenever the subject comes up, and May loves Tony’s relationship with Peter, she does, but the separation anxiety was a lot harder to break than she thought it would be.
And that was entirely on Tony.
They finally got past all the screaming and crying and running around and looking after about a month of trying, but after that it was just silent, desperate tears, which Tony didn’t hear, at first, when she had him stationed in another room. May tried to hide it, tried to distract the baby and sit by and be her own kind of support—but of course, Tony snuck out to see what was going on, and nearly had a stroke.
She’s had to break Tony’s behavior, too.

Summary
Tony never focused too much on time passing, before Peter.
Things would move as they always did, and he was a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type guy anyway, so days blended together and drowned together and died together and he didn’t hardly notice any of it. Too much tequila, but no one was ever counting drinks, definitely not him.
Except Pepper was. Except Rhodey was. Except Tony could feel his mother’s gaze on him from beyond the grave, like an air of disappointment and fear would wrap him up like her lost embrace. He’d notice these things sometimes, amongst the hazy hours and piles of days. People noticing him. People caring. He didn’t deserve it so he blocked it out and continued on the path of destruction.
Sometimes, when he thinks back, he can barely remember any of it.
But Peter makes him value the moments.
