Summary
A farm to the north had found the back half of a cow, cold and bloody on the ground; the dragon had ripped the poor animal in two and taken the front half to slake its hunger. The same farm had been attacked a second time, and the dragon had nearly carried off the farmer's eldest son. The beast was clearly mad with hunger. It had to be put down, and Osric was going to be the one to do it.

Summary
He pressed his palms over his stomach, trying to imagine what the pressure of eggs inside him might feel like. For an hour or two, in the very blackest hours of the night, he entertained once more the disgraceful fantasy of sending someone else in his place. He was valuable to his lord. The knights looked up to him. They needed his experience on the battlefield. Why not send a farmboy off to be bred instead?

Summary
"I won't put one of my only riders out of commission just to breed more dragons," his lord said, tapping the table in front of him impatiently. "Lord Godwin is growing troublesome. I need every knight I can spare."
"A commoner, perhaps, selected from the most trustworthy of your retinue--"
"You should do it," Lord Wyman said. "Prove to me that you have faith in this formula. I've just received word of a dragon terrorizing Lord Bryni's lands. It's the perfect test."
Selwyn opened his mouth, shocked into near rebellion, but shut it tight again at a warning glance from his lord. "Of course. My lord is wise," he said with a bow, wondering as he did so how much longer he would be able to bend at the waist.

Summary
They were very high up now, and the land below was full of creeping shadows. Thelf struggled mightily. A plummet to the rocks below would at least be a quick death if he landed on his head and not his feet. He'd heard terrible tales about what Lord Wyman made men do with dragons. The details were... vague, yes, but the stories always went on about the depravity of it all. Thelf was a good man, always tithing more than was required in church and never chasing after women. Even a little bit of depravity would destroy him utterly.

Summary
Sleep did not come easily. Baldric's fragmented dreams were full of possible futures, all equally terrifying: the final strike of the headsman's axe, the privations of imprisonment, or the endless humiliation of breeding dragons for the usurper king. He woke in the early hours of the morning, with his heart pounding and his mouth dry with fear, and lay in bed with his skin crawling as he contemplated what it would feel like to be stuffed full of eggs. He should have taken a true king's exit, fighting to the last man and falling on his enemy's sword, but it was too late now to make a last stand.
