“It’s three in the morning, Luke!” The phone on her nightstand glows brightly, a sharp contrast to the rest of the room. It takes the blue light boring into her brain, forcibly waking it up, for the situation to sink in. When Julie turns back to Luke, her outrage has faded into alarm. “What’s going on?”
Thunder rumbles in the distance; a lightning flash illuminates Luke’s face. Ice water floods Julie’s stomach, drenching her like the storm outside. She‘s never seen Luke so frightened before — not about the jolts, not about crossing over, not even when he remembers dying. Luke isn’t afraid of things, usually. Tonight, he looks terrified.
“It’s Reggie,” Luke says, shaking his head. “You gotta come. Something’s wrong.”

When someone dies, they’re simply gone. They leave behind the shell of their life, but the person themselves — their body, their soul — is no longer there to fill it. Once someone dies, they’re gone forever, and they don't leave ghosts behind.
Luke’s gone. She knows that.

“Your mom had a total breakdown —“ It’s Chris’s turn to nod, a little ruefully. “You’re having a whole spiritual crisis, my marriage is on the rocks, I quit my job because my dead brother told me to, my kid’s starring in the Sixth Sense remake…” Nicky has to stop for breath. There’s a wild, manic look in his eyes, like a rabbit cornered by a vicious gang of house cats. “And this whole time, they’ve just been hanging out in Loz Feliz, playing in a hologram band, like absolutely nothing’s wrong?”
"Well, there is another thing," says Julie. "They're kind of... coming back to life, maybe?"
