Summary
Bucky gets on a Manhattan bound train around 2:30, heading to 8th St. He watches the Lady far off on Liberty Island as they roll over the East River. The train is crowded and people smile at him, pleased to see a handsome young man in uniform. He smiles back, pleased with the world and everything in it. He wonders where Steve might want to go for lunch. What he'd say if Bucky asked him if he’d ever thought about treating this thing between them as real.
He comes out of the subway a little before 3 o'clock, and the world has changed.

Summary
Twelve days ago, Captain America had landed in England, on a ten stop tour to cheer our boys in service, one of the first USO shows to ever brave the front. Seven days ago, Captain America had gone AWOL in Italy after learning that the 107th had been decimated, and many of its forces captured by the Nazis. Three days ago, he arrived back in the Allied camp, having crossed thirty miles of heavily fortified enemy territory with nearly two hundred POWs in tow, chief among them one Sgt James Barnes.
"Well that - that does rather sound like Steve," Mother says.

Summary
Sam opens his mouth. He’s probably going to say something reassuring. It would make sense. Steve knows what it must look like, to Sam and the rest of them. How carefully they’d not watched him read through the letter. How only Bucky had looked up, when Steve ran out into the snow. Whatever Sam is about to say will probably be crushing and kind and also completely, totally, one hundred percent off base.
“Sam,” Steve says, before this situation can get any worse, “I’ve never seen that letter in my life.”
